When the subject of HC joining MAAC for basketball people point out that why should we join a league with Niagara & Canisius, so why is it OK for hockey? Also, we have nothing in common with AIC & Bentley. We need HE as all of the schools are within driving distance except maybe Vermont & Maine which would take time to travel to those games. Imagine, BU,BC, Providence, Umass,Uconn, Umass, UmassLowell, Merrimack, Northeastern all within one hour from Worcester. Fans from those teams would come to Worcester and we could travel to those schools.

More donors for hockey than basketball which is pretty pathetic if you ask me. I may be looking at the wrong numbers, but what I saw showed basketball with twice as much raised as hockey. (over $10,000 to just over $5,000). With so many more on the M/W hockey teams, assuming equal support, shouldn't that have been reversed? I said donors not donations. We're supposed to be a basketball school so I'm told. I know it's fashionable to dump on hockey (not you RGS) but the lack of enthusiasm for basketball is pretty sad.

The lack of enthusiasm for basketball is because of the league we are in. Nobody cares about the Patriot League.

hcgrad94 is correct, in that ice hockey has ranked higher when donations over the entire year are counted.
Ranking in 2016 (dollars in thousands) / number of donors*
football $256 / 523 lacrosse $215 / 434 crew $190 / 413 ice hockey $177 / 341 baseball $92 / 296 soccer $87 / 227 track & field $72 / 413 hoops $71 / 262
Ranking in 2007 football $126 / 235 lacrosse $61 / 130 hockey $60 / 75 baseball $43 / 103 hoops $37 / 101 soccer $37 / 56 track & field $27 / 130 crew $20 / 95
As donors can split gifts between sports, the total number of donors will be fewer than the sum of all the donors by sport.

If Quinnipiac jumped to HE, would you thumb your nose at the ECAC?

If Quinnipiac jumped to HE, would you thumb your nose at the ECAC? Truthfully, I would prefer ECAC over HE. Natural Ivy/PL rivals, less expensive, probably could stay in current rink, and yet still a top-tier conference that competes for national championships. If, as has been speculated, we do not move to HE, and an opening in ECAC does not occur, then part of me would rather drop men's hockey then stay in AHL. This is not to sound alarmist, but if we merely want to be participatory in the sport than perhaps the money could be better used in another sport. AHL does nothing for student support, alumni support, or brand recognition. Women could still be D1 to offset other scholarships for Title IX purposes and play in the current rink, along with club hockey and youth teams. Obviously I would prefer that we play in ECAC or even HE, but if the options were either keep hockey and play AIC and Robert Morris ad infinitum (not thumbing nose, just does nothing for students or alumni) or drop men's hockey and try and elevate our basketball to say A10, then it becomes obvious.

D1 hockey hasn't helped HC imo.....drain on athletics, no one cares branding-wise, let's 21 year old "freshmen" on Mt St James.....joke of a "college sport"

Going to UNH/BU on Sat and will be visiting with a UNH official I know. I'll see what I can get in terms of where things stand and other schools being looked at.

Correct. Doesn't mean they couldn't change their minds but it is unlikely.
No other school in HE footprint makes sense, and HE has no desire to add a school outside the footprint. The URI/startup idea is a non starter. Once our women are in it will hold the door open for HC men.

As for other schools, it's probably HC and QU at the top, then the next tier would be RIT or Army if HE wanted to move slightly outside of New England, or possibly Bentley? Not a lot to choose from.

ZERO shot of RIT, Bentley, or Army ever joining HE, all for different reasons.

Drop M&W Hockey, turn Hart into a recreational rink for students and the public. Too expensive. Reallocate the money to other sports (to find female schollie recipients for Title IX purposes).

Word I heard is HC has been given a deadline of a week after the Natonal Title game to decide to join HE but must play their games at the DCU! Three other teams have been reached out to gauge their interest. One that is from NY and towards the western part.

As I said, here today, gone tomorrow. I would advise HC to commit now, not a week after the national championship game. DCU is of course mandatory since we did not include expansion of seating at our home ice anywhere in the billion dollar renovation such that we could bring HE to Mt. St. James.

Why wait until the National Championship Game, let's get this done this week. I'm sure the DCU will take care of the dates that we need. The Railers are advertising that they will play 36 games next year at the DCU that leaves many dates available for HE games as the Railers season would probably go late into March or even early April.

Do posters not read what has been posted here for months? There has been much denunciation of both the city and the Railers' owner for apparently striking an agreement that the only ice hockey to be played at the DCU will be played by the Railers, and HC is 'frozen out' (pun intended).
Has anyone posted anything to the contrary?
If what UNHfan has posted is accurate, and the description of the city/Railers arrangement is accurate, then HC is not joining HE.

Hockey is a "fool's errand" for college branding......I live in Massachusetts, one of the major hot-beds for college hockey, and it's given at best, tertiary support from the media here...
