Delta Variant Infects 6 Vaccinated Guests at Outdoor Wedding
In April, 92 people gathered in Texas for a wedding. To lower the chances of COVID-19 infection, the festivities were held outside under a large, open-air tent. All 92 guests were required to be fully vaccinated.
Despite those precautions, six people tested positive for the coronavirus and one of them died, Forbes magazine reported, citing a preprint published in medRxiv.
Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine said viral sequencing suggests "the strain containing the Delta variant was transmitted to wedding guests from two patients travelling from India. With no history of vaccine failure in these patients, our observations suggest these are true cases of vaccine breakthrough, mediated by the Delta variant."
Three females and three men ages 53-69 tested positive for COVID-19. Three were overweight, but none had significant comorbidities or a history of failed vaccination.
The first people to get sick were a man and woman who traveled from India, Forbes reported. The man had no health problems, but the woman had diabetes. Both had gotten two doses of the Covaxin BBV152 vaccine before leaving India.
They tested positive for COVID 4 days after the wedding, and the man became so ill he was hospitalized. Six days after the wedding, he died, according to Forbes.
Two people who'd gotten the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and two people who received the Moderna vaccine interacted with the first two people, and they also tested positive. One of them, a man in his 60s, had to be hospitalized.
The researchers said their findings suggest the Delta variant "may possess immune evasion" in patients that received the Pfizer, Moderna, or Covaxin vaccines.
Forbes summed it up this way: "While the available Covid-19 vaccines can offer good protection against Covid-19, the protection is not perfect. As long as the pandemic is continuing, it is better to maintain multiple layers of Covid-19 precautions when you can."

It is important for the scientific community to find the source of the virus. Let the scientists do their work. However, the continued focus on China in various media outlets by non-scientists to the exclusion of everything else serves no useful purpose. Our vaccination policy in 2020 and early 2021 was an unmitigated catastrophe ( some would say due to criminal negligence) which led to the deaths of hundreds thousands People are getting sick, millions have died and are continuing to die around the world. There are real problems with the unvaccinated in the US and the hundreds of millions who live in counties without sufficient supplies. Yet, all of these things and more are ignored in a vain attempt to deflect and divert. We all get it. China is a bad actor. No need to endlessly repeat it. A discussion of methods to increase vaccinations, get people to mask & distance and the continuing issue of breakthroughs and mutations (as above) serves a far more useful purpose.

[ Actually, given China’s deceptions, we now have a complex US intelligence operation to determine the source of the pandemic. It goes without saying this has been quite a damaging (if one considers 4+ million lives and trillions in medical costs, etc. to be damaging) pandemic and if it turns out to have begun with a lab leak and coverup that will be quite something. Even by Chinese Communist standards.

Wuhan gave us the virus, through the lab or possibly the community spread, but the greater health issue around Covid, or Long Covid, will be the impact it has on our future physical and mental health.
Wuhan has also given this country fentanyl which is delivered directly to the door step of dealers through the dark web. Users of these products often are found to be lonely, isolated, anxious, depressed, or don’t believe they are experiencing a meaningful life.
If the government continues to pay people to stay home, and AI/automation make people less relevant in the workplace, I am deeply concerned about the growing numbers of people who will suffer from drug abuse, addiction, and suicide.
China, intentionally or otherwise, is driving the US to a place where our health and economic recovery becomes more difficult. Despite the historic resiliency of the American people and our country, it appears as if we are facing a complicated path forward.

So, I had a particular interest in this article from National Geographic about a variant I hadn't heard of before today - Lambda. A particular problem in Peru where I still have 3 brothers-in-law and their families. Two of the three are surgeons and my understanding is they've been vaccinated but with the Chinese vaccine which I am hearing is no where close to being as effective as Moderna, Pfizer or J&J. I've been to Peru about 5 times but won't plan on going back any time soon.

The numbers come from Government and give me pause given the recent White House statements and politics. So only 20% of new cases actually come from delta. In the USA of 330 million people there are only 305 deaths credited to COVID. Almost all of these people will have co -morbidities. As delta spreads I predict the death rate will go even lower. But then again I am not a doctor. I am, however, a student of understanding the history of the politics and power. Unvaccinated, Analysis Finds Jemima McEvoy 24 June 2021 Forbes Staff In a stunning reflection of the efficacy of vaccines and an indication of the impact that widespread inoculation could have, an analysis of government data published Thursday by the Associated Press found nearly all Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. last month were among people who weren’t vaccinated against the virus. Coronavirus Pandemic Causes Climate Of Anxiety And Changing Routines In America Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center employees transport a deceased patient to a refrigerated truck on ... [+] GETTY IMAGES KEY FACTS Center for Disease Control and Prevention data reviewed by AP showed just 150 of the more than 18,000 Covid-19 deaths in May resulted from “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people. In other words, 99.2% of the people who died from Covid-19 last month weren’t fully vaccinated against the virus. The same trend was true with hospitalizations: Fewer than 1,200 of the 853,000 people hospitalized last month were fully vaccinated against the virus. KEY BACKGROUND The data support assertions from top public health experts that nearly all Covid-19 deaths can now be prevented. “Nearly every death, especially among adults, due to Covid-19, is at this point entirely preventable,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday. Despite new cases and deaths plummeting to daily averages of 11,310 and 305, respectively, health experts have continued to push for more widespread vaccinations. Their pleas have been made even more urgent by the rapidly increasing prevalence of the more infectious delta variant, which Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday now makes up 20% of new cases. WHAT TO WATCH FOR President Biden has set the goal of having 70% of Americans at least partially vaccinated by July 4, but administration officials acknowledged this week that the target likely won’t be met until weeks later due to dwindling infections. Some 56% of eligible Americans 18 years and older have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, while 66% have received at least one shot. CONTRA While the vaccine rollout has helped curb cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S., Forbes has previously highlighted that vaccination rates do not guarantee protection against Covid-19. Some of the world’s most vaccinated countries, with rates much higher than the U.S., have experienced severe outbreaks. The U.K. is currently grappling with a surge of infections caused by the delta variant, which now makes up nearly all new cases. CRUCIAL QUOTE Fauci warned the delta variant in the U.S. appears to be “following the pattern” of its spread in the U.K. “Similar to the situation in the U.K., the delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the U.S. to our attempt to eliminate Covid-19,” Fauci said, highlighting his particular concern about “under-vaccinated” regions of the U.S., driven in part by hesitancy among young people to get the jab. www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/06/24/99-of-people-killed-by-covid-last-month-were-unvaccinated-analysis-finds/?sh=1fad03a1f049

J&J Jab Efficacy; Delta Now 83% of New U.S. Cases: Virus Update By Bloomberg News / July 20, 2021 06:08PM ET / Bloomberg Government One dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine is much less effective against the delta and lambda variants than against the original strain of the virus, the New York Times reported, citing a study that hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. Delta now makes up 83% of all sequenced cases in the U.S., up from 50% in early July, health authorities said.
A spokesman for U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted that the country’s self-isolation rules aren’t optional following some mixed messaging from a government minister.
France has seen a jump in vaccinations since President Emmanuel Macron announced that passes showing proof of testing or immunization will be required in restaurants and cafes. Apple Inc. is pushing back its return-to-office deadline because of the resurgence in cases across many countries.
Tokyo’s infections continue to rise with just a couple of days left until the Olympics, and more Japanese companies have decided against sending executives to Friday’s opening ceremony.

One Dose of J&J Less Effective Against Delta (5:30 p.m. NY)
A study found Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine is much less effective against the delta and lambda variants than against the original virus, the New York Times reported. The lab-based findings, which haven’t been peer reviewed or published in a scientific journal, suggest the need for a second dose for the 13 million people who have received the inoculation. The authors of the study recommended an mRNA vaccine made by Pfizer Inc.-Biontech SE or Moderna Inc. as the second shot.
The results contrast those from smaller studies published by J&J earlier this month that suggested a single dose of its vaccine is effective against delta even eight months after inoculation, the Times said. Seema Kumar, a J&J spokeswoman, told the newspaper that the new data “do not speak to the full nature of immune protection.”
The new study is credible because the authors don’t have ties to any vaccine makers, John Moore, a virologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, told the Times. He cited several studies in monkeys and people that show that two doses of the J&J vaccine are more effective than just one.
The data should prompt the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its recommendation that fully vaccinated people don’t need booster shots, said Nathaniel Landau, a virologist at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, who led the study.
Pelosi Staffer, White House Aide Test Positive (3:10 p.m. NY)
A senior spokesperson for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a White House official have tested positive for Covid-19. Both had been fully vaccinated and are among several staffers in Congress and at the White House who’ve been recently infected.
The Pelosi staff member had no contact with the speaker since being exposed, Drew Hammill, a Pelosi spokesperson, said in a statement. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that contract tracing had determined that the infected staff there had no close contact with senior people or President Joe Biden.
Delta Now Accounts for 83% of U.S. Cases (11:45 a.m. NY)
The delta variant now makes up 83% of all sequenced Covid-19 cases in the U.S., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said in a Senate hearing. The new figure is up from 50% from the week of July 3. She said areas of the country with limited vaccination coverage are allowing spread of the highly transmissible variant, which was first identified in India.
“Each death is tragic and even more heartbreaking when we know that the majority of these deaths can be prevented with a simple, safe, available vaccine,” Walensky said.
NYC Daily Vaccination Rate Drops to 15,000 (10:30 a.m. NY)
New York City’s vaccine administration rate has plunged to less than 15,000 a day, from more than 100,000 a day in mid-April, as cases increase.
The city has fully vaccinated 4.5 million residents, data show, falling short of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s goal to have 5 million New Yorkers fully vaccinated by June.
The city reported a seven-day average of 576 confirmed and probable cases on July 18, more than double the average on July 6.
Hospitalizations have edged up just slightly. Almost all of those admitted for Covid-19 haven’t been vaccinated, according to Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi. “This is preventable suffering,” he said on Twitter.
Commissioner Dave A. Chokshi, MD @nychealthcommr Cases of COVID-19 are increasing in NYC. Currently, hospitalizations are almost entirely of people who have not been vaccinated. This is preventable suffering.
I’ve heard from New Yorkers who are waiting for the right time to be vaccinated — that time is now.

Netherlands Weekly Cases Rise (9:10 a.m. NY)
The Netherlands reported 69,731 weekly cases on Tuesday, up from 51,957 last week. The number of hospitalizations has gone up in recent days, though at a slower pace than infections. Official figures showed 50 new admissions on Monday, the biggest daily increase since May 10.
The Dutch government has reintroduced some restrictions, including limiting opening hours for bars, while a recommendation for people to work from home if possible was reinstated from Monday.
Indonesia May Begin Easing Curbs (9:05 a.m. NY)
Indonesia may start to gradually ease nationwide emergency curbs if cases and levels of hospital occupancy decline. The government may relax the restrictions starting July 26 if cases continue to fall, according to President Joko Widodo. This will include allowing some eateries and shops to stay open for longer, Jokowi, as the president is known, said in a televised address on Tuesday.

Mauritius Outbreaks Among Vaccinated Workers (8:52 a.m. NY)
Mauritius recorded a record daily number of cases after outbreaks among vaccinated foreign factory workers living in hostels, according to the Health Ministry.
The Indian Ocean island nation, which reopened its borders to tourists last week, added 368 new infections on Monday, with 305 of them being factory workers and almost all asymptomatic. Foreign labor in the country’s export-oriented manufacturing industry accounts for 47% of total employment.
Mauritius is seeking to revive its tourism industry after ramping up vaccinations, and about a third of its 1.3 million people are fully inoculated.
French Shots Surge After Passes Announced (7:51 a.m. NY)
France’s vaccination rollout is accelerating after President Emmanuel Macron announced that “health passes” — showing proof of testing or immunization — will be required in restaurants and cafes.
A Health Ministry official said at a briefing that 4.3 million injections were administered last week, including 1.7 million first doses. In another record, 880,000 shots were administered on Friday. And this week saw the best Monday of the rollout, the official said.
French vaccinations are proceeding twice as much fast as the rollouts in Italy and Germany, the official said. After Macron’s speech, the number of online vaccine appointments climbed to 520,000 daily from 140,000 daily in early July. France will reach its target of 40 million first doses ahead of schedule, the official said.
U.K. Says Self-Isolation Crucial (7:20 a.m. NY)
The U.K. government insisted people told to isolate by the National Health Service contact-tracing mobile app can’t ignore the advice. Earlier, a minister had said it was “optional” and not legally binding.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Press Association that “isolation remains the most important action people can take to stop the spread of the virus.” The mixed messaging came after Business Minister Paul Scully told Times Radio on Tuesday “it is up to individuals and employers” whether they isolate after being “pinged.”
Iran Reports Most Deaths in Two Months (6:27 a.m. NY)
Iran reported a record number of new cases, with 27,444 in the past 24 hours. The country also posted its highest daily death toll in two months, at 250. The latest figures bring Iran’s total infections to more than 3.5 million and its fatalities to 87,624. About 2% of the population has been fully vaccinated, according to Health Ministry data.
Hong Kong, Singapore Travel Bubble Review (4:38 a.m. NY)
Hong Kong and Singapore agreed to conduct a review in late August on whether to implement a quarantine-free air travel bubble, the Hong Kong government said on its website. The condition for launching the bubble couldn’t be met for the time being given the recent surge of confirmed cases in Singapore.
Tokyo Cases Continue to Rise Before Olympics (4:27 a.m. NY)
(Source: Bloomberg)
WATCH: Three members of South Africa’s soccer squad and a rugby coach tested positive for Covid-19 in the Olympic Village.
With just three days left until the Tokyo Olympics, the Japanese capital’s cases continue to rise, with 1,387 confirmed on Tuesday, up from 830 a week earlier. The seven-day average, at 1,180, has roughly doubled over the past two weeks.
Infections among Olympics staff, athletes and others linked to the games are also increasing. Organizers say a total of 71 people have tested positive, including 31 who are among the tens of thousands of international visitors expected in Japan to compete or work at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, more Japanese companies have decided against sending executives to Friday’s opening ceremony.

Interesting comment above regarding the fact that a meaningful number of cases were from those individuals who have already been vaccinated. Whenever one enters into any sort of robust analytical investigative process, a good starting point is to look for common denominators. Have individuals been exposed to a factor or variable at a distinct location? Have they eaten a type of food or drink? Have they attended an event? Have they consumed a medicinal product? Anybody who truly wants an accurate and honest answer — not a given — will zero in on common denominators and then rule things out so as to define what is the most likely cause. The fact that a meaningful number of people involved in these new cases have been vaccinated compels anybody involved in this process to investigate whether the vaccine caused this variant, aided in the process, or is of little to no factor. Do we know the cycle threshold used to test for these new cases? Recall the games played previously with elevated cycle thresholds used in 2020 and then lowered to the level widely recognized as appropriate earlier this year. Hmm Not to inquire this line of pursuit would by definition mean that the pursuit is not truly robust. On this topic, anybody concerned by the numbers of individuals who have been vaccinated and subsequently passed? Last I checked those numbers have exceeded the numbers of all others who had passed after having been vaccinated from ALL prior viral episodes. Seems to me that the unknowns surrounding the virus and the vaccines remain exceptionally high. Until proven otherwise, I continue to like the Vitamin D, C, quercetin, zinc and Ivermectin regimen. Good health and Godspeed to Crusaders everywhere. Your continued illiteracy and innumeracy on this topic is just astounding.
The Law of Large Numbers suggests that there will be "meaningful" positive test results among the population of vaccinated people, just because the number of vaccinated people has gotten so high. Even a small percentage of "breakthrough" infection in the vaccinated will produce a "meaningful" raw count of cases just because the denominator (# of people vaccinated) is so large. From numbers I see today, 161,000,000 Americans are fully vaccinated. Against that denominator, a very very small percentage of breakthrough infections could "sound like" a lot, but really isn't.
Meanwhile, statistics cited in multiple sources this week, notably including by Mitch McConnell, indicate that 97% of the Americans currently hospitalized with COVID come from the ranks of the unvaccinated. That's a very good indication that even in those breakthrough cases, the vaccine is limiting the worst outcomes and limiting the symptoms (if any) to the more manageable set.
Also, a note on vaccination effectiveness statistics: they aren't static across the population. They're often quoted at 90-95% in aggregate, but that doesn't mean they're that effective for everyone. Specifically, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems may see their bodies generate a less robust response to the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable. Just another reason why breakthrough cases are not a sign of a problem with the vaccine.
One final point: Delta was first identified in India in December 2020. Given that timeline (a time when vaccines were only available in medical trials, to a vanishingly small portion of the world population) and location (to my knowledge, there were no trials in India in 2020), it's just ludicrous to suggest that "the vaccine caused the variant".
I'd say "do better", but I don't have a lot of hope in that regard.

The vaccine causing or aiding the variant is possible because this virus is so nasty it can make adjustments (mutations) to get around obstacles (the vaccine) deployed by humans and become hyper transmissible to focus on the easiest remaining prey (the unvaccinated) like a heat seeking missile.

Yes that was a breakthrough case, but not one that I really care about. Life would be better if the disease were eradicated. Should actually make people feel better, not worse; about the vaccine's efficacy. Mostly vulnerable people not getting very ill.
