At least there's a legitimate debate about whether you need the vaccine once you got Covid and/or how long your immunity's good for. Some studies say get it, some say not. But that's no excuse for a medical person not getting the vaccine back around the first of the year. Weren't they at the front of the line? A lot of people had to wait for them, and, often, needlessly. The question still to be answered, if you got the Alpha variant, and have recovered, do you now have immunity and how long, to the Delta or Lambda variant without the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

"viscous glare"--must have been something Upon further review "viscous" means having high viscosity. The glare was "viscious" and I immediately regretted not finding a more diplomatic way to make my request when I saw the look on her face. Healthcare providers have a tough job.

The glare was "viscious" and I immediately regretted not finding a more diplomatic way to make my request when I saw the look on her face. Healthcare providers have a tough job. The request was reasonable, and to her benefit as a health provider, exposed to numerous people, to be conscientious, to the correct way to maintain a viral barrier, by wearing a mask over her nose. In this day, hard to believe that someone does not know how to follow health protocols. I continue with my belt and suspenders approach when inside a building. đ

WaPo in-depth article on Provincetown. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/08/05/provincetown-covid-outbreak/Not behind a paywall. They have apparently determined that the Delta Variant was brought to P-rown by visitors from various parts of the country. It seems there are geographic-specific subtypes of Delta, including subtypes associated with Georgia and California.

I wonder if there's a list anywhere (I looked) of colleges that are taking the Assumption approach and banning spectators (at the "beginning" of the season, which you can damn well take to the bank will mean the whole season).

I think full authorization will encourage many of the hesitant to take the jab. Combine that full authorization with a strong message that the vaccinated can fully ditch the mask (indoors and out) and vaccine rates will increase greatly. (I think folks know that to be true but that message has been muddled from the admin as of late.)

Not sure those sort of antics, by a friend of the current President, are particularly helpful to his most recent message on masking up the vaccinated. Lots of publicity on the unmasked birthday bash on various news sites. At this point the admin (not to mention the fight v covid) is better off retracting any âmasking of the vaccinatedâ notions.

Vaccinations of all kinds have been mandated for many years. Since the days of "Typhoid Mary" and also during smallpox epidemics, successive courts have supported public health measures to quarantine & vaccinate. State governments have wide latitude in mandating public health measures & restrictions on individual's behavior. This is settled law. Of course given the changing tenor of our times any mandates would be met with fierce violent resistance. There would be Holy Hell. "Apocalypse Now"?

Thoughts from a Family Doctor (Me)
34 million Americans (and probably many more) have already contracted COVID-19. Studies find that greater than one fourth of these people develop some form of âlong COVIDâ. In one study from China, for example, three quarters of patients had at least one ongoing symptom six months after hospital discharge. In another report, more than half of infected health care workers had symptoms seven to eight months later. Studies suggest that the likelihood of developing long COVID may not be related to the severity of the initial illness, and it is conceivable that infections that were initially asymptomatic can later cause persistent problems.
For some, symptoms have continued for many months with no apparent end in sight. Many survivors fear that they will have to adjust to a ânew normal.â Many have not been able to return to work, even months later. If this persists, millions of Americans may enter the ranks of the permanently disabled. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) along with the Department of Justice, have jointly released new guidance that now classifies long COVID as a physical or mental impairment, which means that those affected can qualify for disability benefits and discrimination protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
What kind of symptoms are we talking about? People who experience long COVID have report a range of problemsâsometimes multiple symptoms at a timeâfrom shortness of breath to joint and muscle pain. Other articles highlight âbrain fog,â including problems with memory and concentration., difficulty sleeping, heart palpitations, dizziness, and joint pain.
We are still learning about this virus. Will we have millions more disabled workers in an already-stretched healthcare system, in an economy already suffering from a labor shortage? The idea some have that COVIDâs medical impact falls mainly on elderly or unhealthy people seems to be seriously wrong.
Good news! We have an easy way to help prevent this from getting worse. The mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are highly effective in reducing COVID-19 hospitalization and death. We donât yet have proof that they prevent long COVID symptoms in vaccinated people with âbreakthroughâ infections, but it seems likely.
But, large numbers of Americans still arenât getting vaccinated. They think the risk of getting COVID-19 is low, and over hyped, and think it wonât be serious if they do. Theyâre balancing that misunderstanding against a vaccine they consider new and untested and therefore risky. They are wrong.
The truth is, these vaccines are not entirely new, but rather, the application of a technology in development for almost 20 years now. And untested? It met all FDA requirements, and billions of doses have now been given. Major side effects are vanishingly rare. The people in hospitals right now are not there because of vaccine side effects. They are almost all the unvaccinated. The real risk here is to not get the vaccine.

With the Delta Variant Surge, will Holy Cross and other PL schools require proof of vaccination to attend events on campus this fall? It is an issue that must be addressed and stated regarding policy within the next three weeks. Has anyone seen a statement from a school regarding attendance at their home games for the 2021 season? This situation is still so fluid, it's hard to guess what will happen 4 1/2 weeks out from the football home opener, and to the best of my knowledge, HC has not put any restrictions on anything yet. I assume that there will be some sign saying unvaccinated people must wear a mask and vaccination status will be on the honor system. Common in many stores and, in my opinion, pretty useless. I don't think there are a lot of people out there that are choosing not to get vaccinated and also following the honor system masking requirement. I bought football season tickets. If the situation changes and proof of vaccination is required, I am assuming the school will let me know prior to Sept 11. Big shame on them if they make that announcement at the gate that day. Almost ludicrous to think they could be that foolish. Likely also to be a public announcement , since there are sufficient game day sales that simply telling the season ticket holders isn't enough. Figure that as of today, all are welcome at Fitton no matter what their vaccination status, Like everything else with this pandemic, that is subject to change - maybe even in the middle of the season With more time for the status quo to change and also the differences between indoor and outdoor transmission, there is no guarantee that Hart will be following the same policies as Fitton

That will never happen. Just saying âif enough of you get vaccinated, we wonât have to wear masksâ doesnât mean anything. Saying âx% vaccination rate is the key to no more masksâ could work. But they wonât say that.

/\ /\ And if the little kiddies arenât fully vaccinated theyâll be some very risk averse folks concerned about that and warning that herd immunity is unreachable. So we could be talking a very long time âŚand the latest specter of fully vaccinated and breakthroughs throws the whole notion of normality into question for the particularly risk averse. (Not saying there is any rational basis for this sort of thinking but we are talking Covid response wherein it has been possible to highlight and headline the one-offs to scare the folks.)

I was talking to my sister yesterday about these 100 deaths. And I told her that I looked at the reporting form that the Commonwealth created for reporting deaths of fully vaccinated individuals who had subsequently contacted COVID and were hospitalized and/or died. And I explained there was a check the box section on the form, did the individual have diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease? and maybe one or two more. And I mentioned the 98 year old Massachusetts woman who was fully vaccinated and died of COVID. And I said to her, the vaccine is not yet a guarantee of immortality, but I will send a note to Dr. Fauci and ask him to work on that. The Commonwealth is mandating that health care aides in long-term care facilities get vaccinated, post-haste. I recall an article from several months ago that only about 60 percent were. One doesn't need to be Sherlock or Watson to realize the source of COVID breakthroughs in nursing homes. Globe article from four days ago. www.bostonglobe.com/2021/08/06/metro/covid-19-cases-widespread-rising-massachusetts-nursing-homes/

Unconscionable that staff are not vaccinated but there are now one million more job openings than applicants in America so facilities are up against it. They need politicians with the courage to vote for mandates.

It seems to me that the biggest question mark is how long this Delta surge lasts. It lasted about three months in India and a shorter time in the UK. Here is an interesting piece from Science magazine on the topic. It summarizes a lot of predictions and is filled with a lot of uncertainty, but I am hopeful, based upon my reading of it, that by early September we will be on the downslope. www.sciencemag.org/news/2021/08/what-does-delta-variant-have-store-us-we-asked-coronavirus-expertsIn order to get schools open and to keep them open, I would suggest the following: 1. Mandate vaccination for all school children and employees with exceptions for those with religious objections (most of whom are lying--sorry I am so cynical) and health related issues. Unvaccinated people must wear masks which unfortunately includes kids under 12. I notice an overlap between anti vaxxers and the "Unmask our kids" folks so that will be an issue. 2. If over 18 vaccination rates exceed 90%, under 12 kids don't have to wear a mask so long as they test negative once every two weeks. Do it with rapid tests at schools.

It is funny. Some folks see the numbers on vaccinated folks dying (and underlying conditions and ages) as further assurance the vaccinations work superbly and the vaccinated can resume normal activity. Some, of course, have believed in the efficacy and safety of the vax for quite a while and have taken the shot and essentially resumed normalcy as they habitually do with vaccines in general. Others see the number - especially if one-offs are sensationalized or reports arenât contextualized - as reason to continue to mask the vaccinated, etc. Of course there are true anti-vaxxers and hypochondriacs and the politically motivated masker types but weâve gotta move on from that polyglot subset.

A couple more observations:
1.) The reason that vaccinated individuals should wear a mask right now is because we have good science that demonstrates vaccinated folks can be colonized with the virus and spread it, even if they have no symptoms themselves. Masking is basic public health that acts to protect children, and those at risk, and it allows us to keep schools and businesses open during this time. It has nothing to do whatsoever with "politically motivated masker types", what ever that is. I have never met one, but I know of plenty of politically motivated no-masker types!
2.) "Underlying conditions" are very, very common among all of us in society and even here on CrossSports. Over 50% of the general population has an underlying chronic condition that can predispose to worsening disease. These are common things like obesity, hypertension, asthma, COPD, arthritis, on immune suppressing drugs, etc, etc. The % is even higher among those of us who are in the older generation.
I, personally, will mask in public because I have the humility to realize that I do not know whether or not I carry the virus. I will also do so out of kindness, because I do not know if the person in the store next to me has a child battling cancer or cares for their elderly Mom. I also will do so because I care about community. Wearing a mask in public is a small inconvenience for me that helps businesses stay open and employees stay healthy.
