Money was not the problem with the coach. But if we were willing to spend money on a new coach, while eating the remaining money owed to the current one, I'd be more optimistic about the future of our once-proud program.

You have to know when to "cut your losses" in business and I believe that this applies to college athletics as well. Take the hit early and then move on with a better plan for success

But that is not Holy Cross.
The only consolation is knowing that with his coaching skills and a depleted roster Nelson will be fired after next season.
I just feel sorry for players like Gates who will never taste a winning record during their years at HC.

Jarvis Hayes who as the interim coach won the NIT at Xavier, gets the Georgia State job
Steve “share the sugar” Lavin takes the San Diego position. Hope he has improved since St.John’s where he did not recruit in NYC.

But if we were willing to spend money on a new coach, while eating the remaining money owed to the current one, I'd be more optimistic about the future of our once-proud program. This question is not based on any factual inside information, just a hunch. If the cost of stretching to retain Coach Chesney and upgrading compensation for his assistants was the necessity of keeping Coach Nelson for next season and that was made clear to Kit by TPTB before he made his decision, would you agree with that strategy? Again, absolutely no inside knowledge. I would support that trade-off myself.

Educate us. If it's not the money, why is the coach still here?

Lavin used to coach at UCLA so likely has more west coast connections...career .630 winning percentage and has one losing season in his career. Tough to say he is a bad hire.

Jarvis, his twin brother, has been an assistant at Georgia State for the last few years.

Does anyone have a read on student opinions about BN? Or maybe most students don't care. No doubt a student poll sponsored by students - Stay, Go, No Opinion - might be too disruptive 60'sish.

The students participate in polls after graduation when they join Crossports. As undergrads they sign petitions. I bet the Administration hopes a petition on BN's tenure doesn't break out like the one on the Bishop's attendance at graduation.

Hope he has improved since St.John’s where he did not recruit in NYC. I thought Lavin did decent job at St. John's. Especially after watching the Mullin dumpster fire that followed. Lavin may not have established a big local pipeline but at least he won....for 21st Century St. John's standards at least. The days of local CHSAA and PSAL kids going to St. John's like it was a rite of passage ended around 2000.

Unlike recent coaches Mike Anderson's roster has 8-9 from the NYC area, inc the two best players, Champagnie from the CHSAA and Alexander from Our Savior in the Bronx

I think someone here pointed out St. John's players used to get a housing bonus that was a nice perk when St. John's was basically a commuter school. It gave them a nice leg up as long as kids didn't mind not getting the whole experience of moving away from home. I think back in those day, the roster was all NYC kids.

Looks like St. Peter's has hired Bashir Mason away from Wagner (where he had a good run) Wonder how much of the NCAA money they're using to increase the salary for Mason

Digger had a better 1 year "career" at Fordham. Then again, he inherited a much better team.

Wow. My Fordham friends are in shambles right now. They should go guns blazing after Langel.
Associate Head Coach at Hofstra Mike DePaoli served as Fordham's interim when Newberry was canned. Wonder if he gets a sniff.

Im still in shock. This would be the equivalent of Chesney getting the BC job after the 2018 season.
I know Neptune was on Nova staff but still one decent season at Fordham to HC at the flagship Big East program -- thats a jump and a half.
