Disappointed but it has been a great season.
If we get to the WNIT, we'll be more competitive than in the big dance, even though NCAA appearances are how college basketball programs keep score these days. But a better season than every other HC program except for FB.

Heartbreaking that girl could shoot and the Navy coached yelled that's the real MVP when she hit the game winner. She can play 1 second to go though cmon.
I thought when she hit the earlier 3 clearly she lost the ball out of bounds.

We are snakebit.
That was how not to mange the last minute of a game.
My pressure is still off the chart. Total frustration đĄđ¤Ź

It never should have ended in the first round. A loss after that wouldn't have been such a disaster.

This game is a result of missed free throws, poor passing decisions and coaching. With 1.6 seconds left and ahead by a point, you miss the second free throw - game over...... After AL made the second free throw and Navy has ball with 1 second left at mid court - you double team Coleman and do not guard the inbounding player. The inbounding player cannot get the ball back and have time to shoot - game over.....Coleman does not get ball for any attempt with a double team.
Let's hope the staff has learned something from this game.

Coach M gets an A for that inbounds play with 6 seconds left and a double F for not instructing Avery to miss the 2nd ft, and not double teaming Coleman on the last play If you dare watch the replay on ESPN youâll see that we simply played so poorly in all phases and I hate to say it but one could use the word âchokedâ to describe our effort

About as tough a loss as possible, but, quite honestly, team over performed for much of the season. I never though it would win 20 games and regular season PL championship.

Especially given HC had 3 team fouls.

It was a great season and, given some time, it will feel good to celebrate it. Right now though....that's a very tough loss. More than one mistake was made to lose it as a few have pointed out already. But on the last play, there is ZERO reason to guard the inbounder as she cannot get the ball back. Should have sandwiched Coleman with two defenders and made someone else take/make the miracle shot. That was a mistake and it cost the game in that moment.

This just led off the Scott Van Pelt Sportscenter - yikes!
Dumb decision to make the 2nd free throw, but advancing the ball on a timeout at the end of basketball games is quite possibly the worst rule in sports.

Navy had no timeouts left and did not advance the ball after ALâs free throw - they threw it to halfcourt and unfortunately Cross knocked it out of bounds - then they got a free timeout while the refs checked the clock Service academy stars had big games tonight - in addition to Coleman, Armyâs Alisa Fallon scored half of their points vs BU, 37 (of their 74)

The replays were bogus. 1:14 left it took them forever to figure out HC hit the ball out when that's what they called and you could see it easily on one or two views. Then, 4 seconds later, the ball looked like it was off Coleman and they didn't even look at it (which resulted in her hitting a 3).
The final replay? Cross hit the ball out. Right at midcourt or a couple feet after midcourt. Ball went straight down, very little elapsed time, pretty clear. It took them again, FOREVER, to figure out that was .6 seconds not 1 second. Then, they gave Navy the inbounds 4-5 feet closer to the basket. Unless that's the rule, that's inexcusable. 4-5 feet longer shot is a big difference.

'Iâm in so much shock it happened to us,' Stunner at the buzzer ends NCAA Tournament bid for Holy Cross women's basketball team Jennifer Toland Telegram & Gazette
WORCESTER â Before Monday nightâs Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal at the Hart Center, Holy Cross senior guard Avery LaBarbera received her Player of the Year award. It was a most deserved honor for the Crusadersâ feisty leader, who led her team to its first regular-season league title in 17 years. With 1.6 seconds left in top-seeded HCâs game against No. 8 Navy, LaBarbera was in a crucial spot, one she craves and thrives in and, like she did all year, delivered. Her two free throws snapped a 47-47 tie, and the Crusaders were a defensive stand away from moving on to the tourney semifinals. After Holy Cross deflected Navyâs inbounds pass out near the scorerâs table, the Mids got the ball with a second left and they quickly got it into the hands of their best player, senior Jennifer Coleman, who broke HCâs hearts with a 3-pointer banked in at the buzzer.
While officials reviewed, and confirmed, Colemanâs shot, LaBarbera crouched on the Hart Center court, her head bowed, and, like her teammates, stunned. The Mids walked away with a 50-49 upset win. âIt is March,â LaBarbera said, âand anything can happen. Iâm in so much shock it happened to us.â Holy Cross (20-10) earned a WNIT bid, but the Crusaders had their sights set on an NCAA Tournament berth. âWe worked so hard to get the No. 1 seed and host (the PL tourney),â HC coach Maureen Magarity said. âItâs just really disappointing. I give a lot of credit to Navy.â Navy (10-20) moves on to face Bucknell in a Patriot League semifinal on Thursday. Coleman, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, led all scorers with 27 points, including nine in the final 58 seconds. Holy Cross led by 10 with just under six minutes left, but Navy hung in with 3s from sophomore Sydne Watts and Coleman, who tied the game at 47-47 by sinking a 3 with 6 seconds to go.
Following a timeout, HC nicely executed its inbounds play, with LaBarbera throwing it in to sophomore Bronagh Power-Cassidy, who fed it back to LaBarbera going to the basket. LaBarbera missed the layup, but went to the line. âAfter hitting the free throws, I grabbed (seniors) Oluchi (Ezemma) and Maddie (Demski) and said, âThis is not going to be our last game on this court,ââ LaBarbera said. âGreat players make great plays and Coleman is a great player, but we shouldnât have let it get to that point.â Holy Cross students are on spring break this week, but the rowing and lacrosse teams turned out in full force to cheer on the Crusaders and try to replicate the atmosphere of last weekâs regular-season finale when the football team brought the energy during HCâs win over Boston University to clinch the regular-season title.
HC, one of the top defensive teams in the league, had been 19-2 when allowing less than 60 points this season. The Crusaders held the Mids to 17 first-half points, but only scored 19 themselves. Neither team could generate anything at the offensive end and combined for 24 first-half turnovers. âWe had some good looks, but our shots were not falling in the first half,â Ezemma said. âTheir press break caught us off guard a little bit in the first half, but we were able to adjust (in the second).â Junior Addisyn Cross made back-to-back baskets late in the third that gave the Crusaders a boost, and sophomore Janelle Allen gave HC a 41-31 lead with 5:57 left. Holy Cross beat Navy twice during the regular season, but the Mids played HC tough in both games. The Crusaders won the first, 63-53, in Annapolis, and the second, 63-57, here. âTheyâre a great team,â Ezemma said, âand this is the playoffs. Everybody has nothing to lose with everything on the line.â LaBarbera scored 16 points, on 6-of-20 shooting, and had 13 rebounds. Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com. Itâs not her fault nobody could score. Navy coach seems like a great guy all he does is yell and get in the players faces at time outs. Manis at the game. Catch the presidents reaction on the game winner đ˘ Guarding the inbound passer versus double teaming someone isn't a slam dunk. You give the passer a better look and more options on how to deliver the ball. Chest pass from where the inbound was (which is not where it SHOULD have been by several feet) for an open shot in the middle of the court for example. Or a lob of some sort into the paint. Not missing the second free throw is less defensible, have to say. I've seen kids try to miss one and throw up an air ball or slam it off the backboard, but you'd think a good shooter like AL would not do that. The coach who according to our resident pissant "choked" swallowed just fine when diagramming the play that put HC ahead, by the way. One thing that just struck me- we basically lost to a 9-20 team going into the game, play in participant, one star player. Sound like an opponent you know so well and don't like?

Edit: Never mind... with Navy having no timeouts left, not missing the second FT is just an inexcusable mistake. A fireable offense in some circles (not that it would or should ever happen here, but it's that egregious.)
