A big hit for American, sophomore Molly Lavin into the portal I mean, it's a setback, but I wouldn't call it a big hit. Molly was a good player with size, but she wasn't in any way dominant. And we've got a pretty good class coming in. We could look into the portal, but I won't be surprised if one of our freshmen, Cecilia Kay, from your neck of the woods, steps in and starts at the four for Molly next season. We'll bring back our starting PG from this season, our starting three (grad student), and two sophs who played a lot the second half of the season. We'll be competitive, probably middle of the pack. Globe article on Cecilia from a couple weeks ago: www.bostonglobe.com/2024/02/21/sports/leading-voice-cecilia-kay-powered-bishop-fenwick-basketball-with-passion-skill-dominance/

She's a senior. Perhaps her financial aid arrangements, if any, would not be as generous in graduate school at Princeton as they are for undergraduates and not as good as an athletic scholarship. Or do the Ivies still have a rule against grad students playing sports?

That’s correct - she’s gone after her after her undergrad days are over - there are numerous Ivy seniors in the portal although so far have not seen Columbia’s Abbey Hsu, Ivy POY

C'mon Janelle and Callie, join the party. Janelle may be looking at a rigorous grad program in the sciences. Callie may not appear to be marketable but would be a possible pick for a school with a height challenged roster next year. She is much better than when she got picked up after an invisible two years at Memphis. She also may have two years of eligibility.

In a bit of a surprise (at least to me) Grace Sullivan from Bucknell ends up at Northwestern

Going from 13-18 to 10-17 might mean it is less a basketball decision than a decision to move from rural Pennsylvania to the Hub of Academia. On the other hand, maybe Northeastern has a gender neutral NIL collective and has money to offer WBB portal transfers. If so, uh oh. The low major world is changing faster than anticipated.

Northwestern, not Northeastern. Uh oh. No NIL needed to attract a PL student to Northwestern or a mid major athlete to the Big Ten. But Northwestern may have NIL to offer anyways. Holy Cross WBB can play in front of 3 million people on ABC, but enters the portal holding a tin cup with no NIL to offer. How about American MBB and WBB, what's your current NIL status? Is it one collective for both programs equally or two separate ones or just one collective for one team, none for the other or no NIL collective at all yet?

Rest assured northwestern has NIL $ for women’s bball - have you seen the lineup of Power schools in the BIG for 24-25 ?

Nowhere unless they enter the portal and no reports of that yet. But they both would be attractive if they did. We need each to be cornerstones of the team going forward for two years. IL MBB players and Sullivan of Bucknell leaving for presumably better offers is unsettling, that's all.

Unsettling...certainly. Hopefully the group we have as a team at HC will rise above that and start now to build next year's team.

I am generally feeling pretty good that they are coming back if the have not declared for the portal by now. That could change, but hopwfully not.

Meghan Gebbia is the Wake coach and we know she came from AU- her coaching seat is pretty warm going into next season after a 2-16 ACC record this year and many outbound portal defections - I’m not sure Johns can help much in that league
