Holy Cross Holy Cross advanced to the second round of the 2021 FCS playoffs, but it can still have a breakout season this fall by advancing further. Holy Cross will be going for its fourth straight Patriot League title this fall, with 16 all-conference players returning. The Crusaders have a chance to dominate the conference. Holy Cross plays two potential conference title winners out of its conference in Harvard and Bryant, which could have the Crusaders in a position to earn a seed come playoff time. That definitely would qualify as a breakout season. www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2022-05-04/9-potential-breakout-fcs-football-teams-2022-season

Why haven’t we played URI more over the years?

Why haven’t we played URI more over the years? IDK but I do remember the 1984 game when both HC and URI were very talented I-AA teams. 2 great QBs. We won and they eventually were the 2-seed in the I-AA playoffs that year (losing to Montana State).

Why haven’t we played URI more over the years? UMass, UConn, BU and Northeastern were closer. Now they are all out of FCS one way or another.

Why haven’t we played URI more over the years? Playing URI does nothing for me - in any sport.

Why haven’t we played URI more over the years? They were on the schedule nearly annually from the mid '70s through the early/mid '80s...a result of both our dabbling in joining the Yankee conference then, as well as us downgrading and joining 1-AA and dropping teams like Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple etc from the schedule during that era. When we joined the PL, it left the amount of OOC games at a minimum for historic Ivy rivals, UMass, BU etc...sort of squeezing URI off the schedule.

Didn’t want to start a new thread for this so dropping it here. Pretty good company even if we’ve still got a way to go to catch the big dogs.

Think this can be a great year, think the National semis are within reach, but incredibly nervous that we might trip and fall in conference
Almost a too good to be true scenario

Think this can be a great year, think the National semis are within reach, but incredibly nervous that we might trip and fall in conference Almost a too good to be true scenario If we're THAT GOOD that rhe semis are in reach, we'll be an at-large in the event of a PL in-season upset. In the 25 seasons of Patriot League NCAA playoff participation, only once has a team made the semis. Colgate in 2003 when they made the final in Chattanooga. Even harder now with the extra round.

Think this can be a great year, think the National semis are within reach Still a long shot but the fact that we can believe this given where we were 5 years ago is truly amazing. Gives me some small amount of hope that basketball can turn around with a great hire.

We should be a heavy favorite in every game.

We should be a heavy favorite in every game. Agreed. Given our recruiting (a particular strength of Bob Chesney) and player development (another strength of our program lately) we’ve widened the talent gap with the rest of the Patriot League. Of course, smacking around the PL and smacking around teams in the playoffs are two different things entirely - as we saw last year.

Don't remember who we played in the playoffs. I had the impression HC smacked around pretty well in the playoffs, too.

To me within reach means a stretch goal -- but achievable if all things come together As I said this can be a great year for the Crusaders

While the PL schedule "only" allows for 5 OOC games per year, URI has been a member of the CAA (which was previously the A-10 and Yankee prior to that) with just 3 OOC opportunities available per season. URI plays 8 CAA games, an annual FBS guarantee game as well as the Governor's Cup against Brown every year. That leaves one game remaining, and with in-state Bryant having moved up I believed they've played them a handful of times. URI played a four-game series with Harvard that ended in 2019. When I was at Holy Cross, they had what I believe was a four-year "Rams v. Rams" series against Fordham.

Our experience and talent ended up prevailing, but Lehigh seemed to click in the final five games of the season -- close loss to Fordham (should have beat them), very competitive game against HC, and then wins against Bucknell, Georgetown, Lafayette.
