We all want PL schools to upgrade talent level to provide stiff competition with HC even if it results in an occasional loss. No 5th year non-medical redshirts, as in the IL schools, roster size notwithstanding.Top ranked Yale, Harvard & Princeton can compete on a national level w/o non-med redshirts. PL powerhouse programs can do no less. Need is to keep PL sports in appropriate de-emphasized perspective. PL schools do not exist for football. And, yes %th year non-med redshirts serve the needs of the teams not the academic interests of the students. PL is about chemistry, coaching and talent Unless something is happening out there I think we have all three covered Regarding red, blue, gray and green shirts, the best colored shirt for Alma Mater might be purple. Red shirting and it's cousins create a math problem: using five seasons of scholarship in exchange for four seasons of play. Enrolling student-athletes who have completed 13 years of school prior to matriculation doesn't cause that math problem.

We need to stop over analyzing and protecting policies of the past
Keeping 10-15 players for a fifth year is not a financial burden nor does it impact the academic integrity of Holy Cross
Fifth year students should be the norm for football not the exception and if the idealist disagree God Bless you for your opinion

It seems your proposal reduces full scholarship equivalencies from 15 per class to 12 or so.

I think a non medical 5th year should be an option, Whether that is capped at 3-5-8-10 players per year. Also, it should be up to the individual school to decide if they want to use them.
This is just an opinion, unlikely to be widely supported on this board or blessed by the PL. If I offended anybody by my remark, I apologize

Fifth year players have two advantages, 1) physical maturity and 2) experience in the program/skill maturity. I'm just pointing out that when the increased physical maturity is accomplished by a PG year after HS/reclassification it is more efficient scholarship wise.

Would think that varying opinions on HC policies would not be personally offensive to anybody. (Obviously, arrows aimed at another can be offensive)This board is a freewheeling discussion with differing opinions on everything. It is to admired for its diversity of opinion on everything. Disagree? Yes. Upset? Sometimes. Offended? No. Thank you for exposing me to your well-considered points of view.

(Covid 5th-years and non-medical 5th-years and medical 5th-years are distinctions without practical difference in terms of structure and management). Of course there are one or two folks who don't like it. There are also one or two folks who don't like football scholarships or pre-season football camp or competing for the FCS National Championship.

The lack of a huge response on this sports board to expanding college to 5 years to benefit the football team and make some alums happy indicates little resonance among alums & major HC stakeholders, namely the school leader. Some support for greater emphasis on athletics is to be expected on a sports board. Hope & expect the school along with the PL will continue to steer clear of 5th year athletes and maintain its policy of basing its decisions on what is best academically for the individual student. Carry on.

No doubt you are correct…..with the possible exception that supporters of the program who want the team to be able to compete for a National Championship on equal footing with top tier teams have little inclination to debate your ad nauseum point of view.

What is unclear is how to weight Coach Chesney's influence compared to increased fifth years in the program's recent success. It is also ironic in the sense that the no non medical red shirt rule was probably designed to protect undergraduate only league members like Holy Cross who are at an inherent disadvantage because they can only offer a five year bachelors instead of a free masters degree to their best seniors. In practice, under Coach Chesney or a possible successor of similar skill, HC can probably do more with non-medical fifth years than most league schools because of how positive HC FB is right now. I hope every lever can be pulled to give HC a chance for a third "natty" during this window of opportunity. The future is now while the force (Coach Chesney) is with us.

Don't tell me HC is the only high seed that has some easy games.

Move it to Yankee Stadium if both teams are ranked.

Thanks for heads up. I'll get on buying thode tix.
Other option, which is maybe a 10 minute walk, is to park in the Botanical Garden Metro North garage on Bedford Park Blvd and Webster Ave. Overpriced though, they really gouge the BG tourists during the daytime.

Looks very reasonable. One interesting (though perhaps not particularly relevant) factoid regarding Fordham's schedule last year: "Even with Holy Cross’ 12-1 record, Fordham opponents went 43-80 a year ago."

“It’s hard not to consider Holy Cross the biggest favorite going into any FCS conference race this season” Bulletin board material for a few schools, such as SDSU

No doubt with all the publicity HC will have a target on its backside. Opponents will be especially motivated to kick HC's butt. Expect the players under Coach BC's leadership will have it covered. Gonna' be interesting, possibly quite dramatic.

I have apparently led a very sheltered life. I have often heard the phrase that someone had a target on their back, but not backside. As for trying to kick the Crusaders' butts, I suspect most of our opponents, especially within the league, would be happy to leave the field with a "W," whatever the final score. I'll go a bit further and suggest that even Army and BC would be happy with a win over a nationally ranked, albeit FCS, team.

The MVC has a legit 5 teams that are potential top 25 caliber and NDSU is always at least a coin flip of winning the conference. Big Sky has 6 teams. CAA 5, So Con 4 etc. PL has maybe 2 IF Fordham's new OC can reload from Decker, Montes can replace DeMorat AND the new DC can at least get the Defense serviceable.
Speaking of Decker at ODU, Fordham transfer QB Grant Wilson that left with Decker was just named starting QB. Was supposed to be "the guy" after Tim D which is why Fordham went the portal route with Montes. Curious if that's more a reflection of Wilson's talent or the shape of ODU's program - led be one year HC asst coach (2004) and stud Cornell QB Ricky Rahne
