I'm recalling a Basketball Instagram post of a couple weeks ago touting the team's overall GPA for the first semester at 2.96. I think I might have swept that one under the rug. Like I said prior, a 2.96 at Holy Cross is more impressive than a 3.46 at Harvard. Just pointing out a fact. I agree, but that number still seems too low to crow about - especially given the numbers we've seen in the past from MBB and other sports.

I agree that a "statement" hire is highly unlikely. Unless, of course, some famous, successful coach or former coach suddenly gets the notion that somehow bringing Holy Cross back from its current depths to back to its former glory will be the crowning achievement on his/her career. Personally, I would be very happy with rolling the dice on any of those successful mid-Atlantic D-III coaches. Continuing with Nelson just doesn't seem like a good idea. There is a D3 Coach across town in Worcester who has put together a great run at WPI. A write-up in the T&G this week pointed out his teams have won 20 or more games 16 of the 22 years he has been their coach. His name is Chris Bartley. WPI is ranked in the Top 25 in D3.

I mean, the strictest interpretation of "The Chesney Model" for our hoop coach hire is to, as ihoop famously stated (paraphrased), "run a so-called national search just to settle for someone within the range of the Consortium shuttle".
Bartley fits the description.

Along the same lines, wonder why the guy at Bentley, Jay Lawson, never moved on. Over 600 wins and a winning percentage over .667

Similarly there are very successful high school coaches, including some in the Hall of Fame, who repeatedly turned down college offers: Bob Hurley Sr., Jack Curran(Archbishop Molloy, (Queens, NY), Morgan Wooten(DeMatha, DC)

Over 600 wins and a winning percentage over .667 Bentley WBB coach Barbara Stevens went 901-200 over 34 years on her way to Springfield as a member of the Naismith BB Hall of Fame. Bentley seems to have a well run D-2 Athletic Program, despite their poor season in D-1 AHA this year.

There is quite a bit of grade inflation at Harvard. At Holy Cross, not so much. At least undergrad. Not sure if the same would be true in the law, med or business schools.

He went from HC at St. Mary's HS in Manhasset to HC at Iona College within a span of 5 years, with an intermediary stop at LIU-CW Post.

Former WPI star Ryan Cain has Keene State ranked 5th in the nation in D3 with a gaudy 25-1 record. He has been there since 2016 and has had consistently good teams. He had one dud year in the middle but has won 19+ games in every other full season.

In today's Sports Section of the NY Post there is a glowing article about Fordham basketball & Keith Urgo, the new first year 42 year old head coach at Fordham. 20+ win season. Players not leaving. Transfer from Ga. Tech, 2nd leading scorer. Rose Hill Gym packed. Excitement among players & students. A buzz in the Big Apple. There was a reference to the fabulous Charlie Yelverton Ram team . '70-'71. (Had seats on the Garden Floor for the FU win against ND. SRO crowd. It was the most amazing college b-ballgame I have ever experienced. My ears are still ringing. Digger left. Digger sucks.) Back to the present. Why can't HC do the same as FU?

I hope we don't have as many terrible years as Fordham Hoops has had, but at the present time we are giving the Rams a real challenge.

Local guy (I think Sutton or Northbridge), played at St. John's Shrewsbury and starred at WPI. No more talk of retreads. No more talk of Ivy/PL guys. No more talk of being familiar with HC. Get a young guy in here that can coach and recruit. Period. If it flops, try again. Can't get any worse than it is now.

With all we have seen, I still have to say that as bad as it appears right now, it can ALWAYS be worse.

Andy Sachs' team, Chesapeake College, scored 109 points and won by 36 on Friday night to move their season record to 25-4. They have won 10 in a row and are 13-1 on the road. This guy can coach, has strong ties to HC, and knows what it would take to turn this program around and WIN again. Call him, Kit. Please. www.letsgoskipjacks.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/schedule

Time to move from the wilderness.
Let it be said let it be done…..
It only takes a small active consistent group to begin the groundswell.

Current capacity is 1,800 and they've now had five sellouts in a row -- I've been at three of them. Don't get me wrong, atmosphere is awesome with the student section absolutely raucous each night but even Milan Brown-era Holy Cross teams would sell out an 1,800 seat arena most games...and against PL competition at that. Fordham didn't start selling out games until a couple weeks into A-10 play when students returned from holiday break. Digger was at the game yesterday, believe it or not! Holy Cross will do the same, better times are ahead. The football team has proven that Worcester will still come out and support a winner if you build it. As a longtime Fordham fan, I'm not ready to put Urgo at the same level as our own Bob Chesney. Let's see how Fordham rebounds next year without current grad stars Quisenberry and Khalid Moore. They have an OK group of underclassmen but Urgo will need to keep recruiting A-10 level talent via both HS and portal, and more important, keep them at Rose Hill. Atlantic 10 is very down this year. First time in as long as I can remember that the league could very well be a one-bid league on the men's side.

Six impressive years as the head coach at Keene St. Very impressive resume. Certainly someone worth kicking the tires on.
