Any idea on who is joining Paulsen's staff? Gotta imagine that he has to be close to finalizing his plans.

Would Coach Nelson ever consider coming back as an assistant? I know things did not go well for him as the head guy but he has a proven track record of success as an assistant coach (at a Jesuit school, to boot) and would be humbled and ready to work. Since we are already paying him, it could be a great cost saving move as well. Just my two cents.

Who Would work a year of his life in middle age, not typical intern age, for free after being a twenty year professional in the field? He could be an assistant anywhere next year for the same net pay after Holy Cross offset, why add the awkwardness of doing it at HC?

Rounding out the staff. Rate from easy to difficult finding and hiring good assistants for the HC b-ball team. From 1 ------> to ------->10. 8. (EASY) (Difficult)

6. Depends a lot on how much the pay is. Many would look at this as a good job--if it pays enough.

6. Depends a lot on how much the pay is. Many would look at this as a good job--if it pays enough. Very good point. Never thought of pay. This scale is an attempt, possibly futile, for me to learn the elements of hiring/accepting an assistant's position both for school and coach. It truly cuts to the core of what a program is about.

What makes someone a good assistant coach? Non-expert that I am I’d have to guess one or more of the following: (1) great recruiter-able to persuade key targets to sign on; (2) great teacher-can help players with skills, e.g. free throw shooting, footwork for big man, etc; (3) good at scouting opponents, viewing tape; (4) specialist in strategy/tactics for special zone defense or some offense. Having said that, I have to ask how we fans can judge how good any of our assistants are in those areas.
Maybe we can learn of the recruiting element , e.g. “Assistant Coach John Doe was the key man in pursuing and signing first team All-PL first teamers Johnny Smith and Joey Jones”. I have no insights in the other areas I listed.

Anyone hear of anything in regards to the staff? Was hoping CDP could bring at least one in this week. Sounds like AU hired someone.

Excellent question for anyone at the President's Council webinar to ask today. I'd ask it myself except I will be stuck in a closing meeting for an audit!

Just checked. You are correct sir. Next Thursday. If my day job doesn't get in the way and assistants have not been named, I will ask if given the opportunity.

Anyone hear of anything in regards to the staff? Was hoping CDP could bring at least one in this week. Sounds like AU hired someone. Coach Simpkins is hiring Jackie Manuel, currently the director of team and player development at North Carolina, to a bench assistant job at AU. Manuel played on the 2005 Tar Heels national championship team and was a stalwart defensive player. At UNC, he wasn't on the bench with Hubert Davis, but worked with players – in particular Leaky Black, the Heels' forward – with various off the court issues. He and Coach Simpkins were on Wes Miller's staff at UNC-Greensboro from 2012 to 2015. He's also been an assistant at Valparaiso and UNC-Wilmington. Very excited about the hire.

Has HC recently been the graveyard of coaches? Maybe, Coach Paulsen has a steep hill to climb. He will get the job done.

Has HC recently been the graveyard of coaches? Maybe, Coach Paulsen has a steep hill to climb. He will get the job done. Well, no assistants were let go during four years of shockingly bad results. Kennedy left to take a position in politics. That shows that the administration didn't demand that the staff be shaken up in response to the losing as a way of showing they were taking decisive action as sometimes is the case. That would provide reassurance to some applicants who might have gone through that type of environment at other stops.

Rumor on the American board is Sam Ferry is going to Duane Simpkins’ staff at AU.

I'm concerned he may take some valuable secrets with him to DC: "Watch out for #11, he can shoot......they don't have many healthy bigs".
At any rate, wish him well.
