Walked the dog hoping HC could just close the gap a bit. Didn’t work. I made my daughter some dinner and ended up with the same result. Winthrop easily the strongest defensive team in this tournament and they also shot the ball very well today (53% from 2PT and 3PT) -- not going to do the math on EFG% but VERY HIGH. Tough to beat that combination.

Winthrop was in control almost all the way. It will be interesting to aww how much the team learns from this. The Eagles certainly beat the spread., Never thought I'd be saying this, but I bet Bucknell does better against Duke this weekend than we did against Winthrop.

I apologize for probably missing this but what’s the story with Rabs? Injured? We need his height desperately. At the Sacred Heart game, Rabs appeared to have a splint around his right ankle. He may not be ready for a couple of weeks. Edit: Guess my assessment was incorrect as Rabs is now playing at the end of the game tonight. Rabs has been wearing the splint all season. However, in the second open practice, he seemed to move all right. Also, he has been dressed for every game ( as opposed to Tse who was not dressed against SIena). He might not be 100 % but he can play. After tonight, it just looks like he is currently #13 on the depth chart

The team is DEFINITELY better than this. That said, DP has cautioned not to be overly optimistic. Two steps forward, one step back.

The good news is the coaching staff now has a season of teachable moments wrapped up in a neat one game package. It will be interesting to see how they come out against Elon.
May I may one suggestion? Can someone create a new message thread for the next 2 games, so this disaster can be buried as quickly as possible?

At least we know Declan Ryan can shoot free throws. And De’Andre Williams can drive and finish (3-3), and playmake, 5 assists,(of team’s 10),1 turnover(of team’s 13)

And the other takeaway that we already knew is that we really, REALLY need a big. Don’t want to point to anyone specifically but SO FAR, our bigs are not ready for prime time. Maybe with some additional development by DP and his crew, but they are not close to ready yet.

And De’Andre Williams can drive and finish (3-3), and playmake, 5 assists,(of team’s 10),1 turnover(of team’s 13) Very impressed with his play so far. Through four games, he's made 80% of his twos, and has 11A/4St with just 3 TOs.
But in 86 minutes, he still hasn't gotten to the line - neither have Nugent and Singleton, who haven't shown any inclination to go inside.
Collectively, those three and Batch have a grand total of two FTA in 360 minutes.

Opponents have made more free throws (63) than Holy Cross has attempted (58).

Hard to put Singleton with the others here as he has played only 41 total minutes, more than half of which came last night. And , as you infer, Williams’ effective penetration most often results in a basket or an assist.

Opponents have made more free throws (63) than Holy Cross has attempted (58). If we're hitting 3's we're competitive but if not we're toast. There's no inside game, no low post game. If you have no inside game and few drives to the basket you get few free throws.

Or even a redshirt freshman, you might say. Three years worth at most one year between the pandemic, injuries (mostly) and the Nelson reign of error.

And the other takeaway that we already knew is that we really, REALLY need a big. And an effective PG. The "by committee" work has not been encouraging so far - Batch camps outside, Bo/Joe have more turnovers than assists. Only one guy is flashing PG skills at the moment. Even without a legitimate five, we are shooting a very respectable 54% on twos - having an effective/efficient guard who can get into the paint and score/facilitate (while being disruptive at the other end) can only help.
Per 40 minutes . . .
ORtg DW 124.9 Joe 113.1 Batch 98.4 Bo 83.9
2P% DW 77.8% Joe 66.7% Bo 42.3% Batch 30.8%
Assists DW 5.1 Bo 3.9 Batch 2.5 Joe 1.9
Turnovers DW 1.4 Batch 1.9 Joe 3.6 Bo 4.5
Steals DW 1.9 Batch 1.0 Bo 0.9 Joe 0.3

If you have no inside game and few drives to the basket you get few free throws. Actually, I think Kenney has been giving us pretty decent games inside. The problem is, he is doing it as a center instead of as a slightly undersized power forward. The problem isn't so much on offense as it is on D. I think both Nugent and Kenney are being forced to play out of position.
