Academic advising is a common staff position at Division I universities, including those beyond the fine tablecloth of the PL. Stanford has a staff of ten, Duke 11. That two sports at Georgetown can afford one FT position each is a function of budget. Perhaps football will have the budget someday to hire more than a part-time graduate assistant to serve as a resource to 95 men across four undergraduate schools, each of which has different requirements and various hurdles for graduation. If this is not allowed in PL rules, please say so, because Richmond has this staff member: Associate Director of Academic Support/Director of Football Academic Performance richmondspiders.com/staff-directory/brianna-kropinack/495

^^^ Before Boston University joined the Patriot League, it agreed that students enrolled in one of its colleges could not play on a BU team competing in a conference sport. And about the same time, the Loyola men's hoops coach quit because Loyola accepted the AI as a condition for joining the PL. I wonder if that decision worked out for that coach. It's always great to have at least an equal offer in your back pocket when you make these bold stands on principle. Not that his was a great hill to die on. One could argue that Patsos made out all right. I think Siena took the hit.

Her job is to monitor academic progress of her problem children.
As for academic advising, the key word in your first sentence is "universities." Duke and Stanford are AAU research universities. When faculty aren't teaching their two courses a semester, they're doing research. They're not doing student advising. That's why they need a separate advising center. We're a small college. One of the advantages is that once a student declares a major, which most do from day one, their academic advisor is a faculty member. That's the person who is best able to guide them through their major, not a staff person trying to keep straight the requirements of 30+ majors

Yes, and I think this section illustrates the relative difficulties of meeting Patriot League AI and redshirt rules while running competitive programs: The inability to redshirt was seen as a huge detriment to New Hampshire's competitiveness on the field - much more so than the Academic Index.
"We had to crunch the Academic Index for months," Scarano told me, "Interestingly enough, the kids we admit would have not been impacted by the academic index. We are admitting kids that fit our academic index just as Lehigh gets theirs, and Colgate gets theirs.
"But one of the really hard obstacles we ran into was redshirting."That might explain why the Richmond press conference hit the red shirt issue really hard and the AI was no issue at all. Amazing for the PL that it picked up a school in UR that's a plus academically and athletically. All under the cover of darkness throughout the FCS world. There wasn't a peep of rumor about this move that I have seen referenced, perhaps because the PL wasn't perceived as being able to pull off an acquisition this good. Once it was announced, people can see the synergy. Do we have any intel on what Furman and/or Elon. may be doing ??

They took Montana to overtime in the FCS quarterfinals last season and open up against Mississippi this season as well as playing William and Mary and what must be many long time nearby rivals in conference since their first football game was in 1899. The CAA also appears to work for Elon. They have had three straight winning seasons, open against Duke and in a 12 game 2024 season they only leave their region once to play at Albany with both Maine and New Hampshire traveling to North Carolina.

My brother in law played basketball at Elon and lives in that part of NC. He told me the So Con is soliciting Elon and W&M for all sports. Basically if and when the CAA eats itself, we are here for you.
IMO, if Nova does indeed leave, all bets are off.

Villanova's expenses for football in 2022-23 were almost the same as HC's. However, Villanova's operating expenses were $925,000, significantly more than HC's operating expenses. I thought the difference might be travel costs, but Villanova had only one long trip, --to Orono Maine. But with Delaware and now Richmond having left, the likelihood of an increasing number of games in NC against Campbell, Elon, and NC A&T is probably not that appealing ------ Was researching the SoCon re: W&M jumping to that conference, and found a news item about a Furman football player who died from a "medical emergency" while working out at the school in February. Posthumously awarded his degree (magna cum laude) two days later, soconsports.com/news/2024/2/9/furman-mourns-the-passing-of-footballs-bryce-stanfield.aspx

John O'Connor calls William and Mary a private school. They had to have been private when they started in the 1600s as Virginia wasn't a State yet but somewhere along the way they became a State University I believe.

A poster on the Delaware board wrote today he had hoped the Hens would do what Richmond just did; join the PL. Delaware would've been part of my "dream expansion" for the PL in all sports, along with W&M, Northeastern and Fairfield. But, they're in G5 land now so no looking back. Replaced with Binghamton in my "dream but maybe realistic" PL expansion. And in football I'm obviously down with Villanova coming on board, should that materialize.

W&M was initially founded -- I think with royal funding -- to educate Native Americans in Virginia colony.

Richmond basketball NIL at 500k and rising. It will affect Richmond football. For all that don’t believe in the NIL way of the college athletic landscape, sorry it’s here to stay. Let’s hope that the academics on the hill don’t snub their nose at the direction of athletics. Hate to become cellar dwellers again and lose more coaches because they can’t compete.

I feel like athletics is trending in the right direction.
Obviously football has had an historic 5 year run. Women’s BB ball seems to be in good, steady hands with Maureen and Co. Men’s hockey on the way up under Riga. Baseball big strides this year with a PL Coach of the year award and some talented underclassman. Women’s Lax big turnaround under Belichick.
And I’m cautiously optimistic DP is the right guy to get Men’s BBall back into relevancy before he rides off into the sunset.

I wonder if Richmond will be eligible for the automatic bid from the CAA next season, their last in the CAA?

I wonder if Richmond will be eligible for the automatic bid from the CAA next season, their last in the CAA? Leagues can be petty. If a team qualifies for an auto-bid on the field but the league denies them due to a recent or upcoming conference change, the committee could give them every consideration within reason for an at large bid. I hope the PL makes UR eligible for the autobid in 2025, their first season. I assume UR requested it and it shouldn't be a deal breaker for the PL. Also interesting will be decisions on which teams to start series with at Richmond or at the PL school. Maybe a lottery would be fairest, but UR could have attained the exact terms that meet their needs during pre-contract negotiations if they chose I bet, because that's when they had leverage. The PL is getting great benefit from adding UR. In our region the IL is fixed and eternal but the other two FCS conferences, the CAA and NEC have experienced instability. The PL is the league getting stronger.

Did you mean when they announced they would be leaving? After all, if they "left" why would anyone think they carried their AE Championship eligibility with them?

Would love to see Richmond in PL Bball. An upgrade in faculties to view a game for sure.
The Robins Center on the campus of the University of Richmond is a 7,201 seat capacity arena that first opened in 1972 and underwent extensive renovations in 2014. It is currently the 7th largest venue in the A-10. The Spiders in recent years have typically placed around fourth for average annual attendance in the A-10 with numbers in the 5-6k range.

Richmond, like Providence enjoys a "No major league teams" dividend. Worcester like the other two cities has no major league team but doesn't get the same benefit for it's D-1 team. This is one area where the Patriot League definitely holds HC back. If either the Big East or A-10 had been joined at inception it would have been easier to grow budgets organically as league revenue grew. But HC has one positive option available to it now and forever, just win baby, and then see what happens.
