Another Ivy undergrad hits the portal. Freshman Derek Sangster of Princeton. What is going on? Along similar lines, Duke now has 7 players in the portal and as of now, only two scholarship players returning. It’s time to stop the madness. Would imagine that all 7 Dukies got NIL $$$... and I know for a fact that TJ Power got a very large NIL deal.... does anyone know what actually happens to those deals when these players leave??? Did they receive all that $$$$ up front, have to pay it back??? Or was it to be given out over their 4 years at Duke???

Yes, both Mark "the Bird" Fidrych and Mike Sherman were math students of mine... also coached both in basketball. Sherm was Algonquin class of '73 and was at the reunion last fall! Was a great time rehashing old times! Sadly, Mark left us too soon... both outstanding men!!!

So, a couple of weeks ago, while going into Saturday mass, a woman, who I have known all my life, was 3 years behind me in school and knew that I was an HC grad asks if I was following the HC women's basketball team... I said of course and am thrilled that they are in the tournament! Following some further discussion about the team, she asked if I knew that she was the coach of the first HC women's basketball team? I told her that I did not know or I had forgotten it. Sharon Dupre, a 1970 graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers College was the coach of the first HC women's basketball team, the 1974 -75 season. They were 0 - 12 in Division 3. At Bridgewater, she was the roommate of Diane Sepavich, who became the then titled Coordinator of Womens Athletics at HC. Thus, the Sepavich/Dupre connection. One thing that Sharon shared with me was that the team was only allowed 1 hour of practice a day on a court that was shared with the fencing team! So practice only at one basket! Sharon eventually went on to a very successful teaching/coaching career at Blackstone Millville Regional High School. Diane was also involved with girls field hockey at Algonquin Regional High School, where I spent my entire career, some 35 years. Last fall I attended the 50th Algonquin HS reunion for the class of 1973. Ironically, Diane was also there and we spent some time talking about those days long gone! I have attached a picture of Diane from that 50th reunion! So, as Paul Harvey would say... "now you know the rest of the story..."! From the HC women's Basketball archives.... Named coach followed by team captains! 1974-1975% 0-12 .000 Sharon Dupre 1975-1976% 8-7 .533 Pat Corcoran Mary Ellen Phelan 1976-1977% 8-9 .471 Pat Corcoran Gail Buschmann, Maria Rota 1977-1978% 5-10 .533 Pat Corcoran Barbara Kelley, Heidi Lewis 1978-1979% 7-11 .389 Kevin McAuley Margaret Dempsey, Barbara Kelley HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!

First, kudos to the Women BBall team for another outstanding season, two in a row now!!!
Thought this would be a good exercise given how, where and why it came about…
1.) What was the first season of women’s basketball at Holy Cross? For example, we just completed the 2023 - 2024 season.
2.) Who was the coach of the first women’s basketball team?
3.) What division did they play in?
4.) What was their Won/Loss record for that year?
5.) Who was Head of Female Athletics at that time?
Only the one who answers all 5 questions correctly will be declared the Winner Par Excellence!!!
When someone gets all 5 correct answers I will reveal how this came about!!!
Have at it!!!

With a tough 3 at the end of regulation, BC sends UVA into OT in the ACC quarters Sorry hoops... it was a 2 pointer to tie the game at 57. UVA then wins in OT... (UVA should have won easily in regulation had they made some foul shots - sound familiar?)

Thought I was clear on that... yes the men were taken out and not the 2 women...

Crucis: apologies for not getting back on this sooner, but wanted to make sure I had what happened correct... The two women were in the bleachers back to back to the concession stand... they were to the right of those sitting on the Navy team's bench. The men were sitting up in the seats to the right of the Navy team's bench, in the area above the scoreboard in the corner. The 2 black women stood for all the songs/anthems and then sat for the national anthem. The small group of men above them called them out on their sitting with some harsh words. They must have had some connection to the military, asindicated by the emblems they had on their top wear. Almost immediately and quickly they were escorted out of the Hart BB arena. That's what I know...

I was at the game on Saturday. Prior to the start of the game, and after the recognition of the seniors for both schools,” Lift Every Voice and Sing” was played, followed by the Irish National Anthem, the Canadian National Anthem and the Star Spangled Banner. Each song had wonderful displays of the lyrics or the national flag. I was sitting above the HC team and did not see, hear or witness the incident described. I was in Hart early and stayed until the end of the game. If this occurred, it was not much of a flurry, and I give little credence to the tale. The game was certainly not delayed or interrupted.By the way, “Loft Every Voice and Sing” lyrics are displayed on the video board prior to the game. The song by James Weldon Johnson has wonderful lyrics and melody, and the rendition played at the Hart this month is very pleasant to listen. The lyrics can be found in the link below, and as you can see is non racial or political. poets.org/poem/lift-every-voice-and-singhttps://poets.org/poem/lift-every-voice-and-singCrucis: You are a dear and well respected friend! I can assure you that this did happen and the person who was expressing his anger at the 2 women fans ( not players) was either asked to leave and/or escorted out of the building! It may not have been much of a flurry and did not delay or interrupt the game but it did happen! My source may not have seen the entire event but did see the man taking out his anger on these 2 women. That’s why I asked if anyone here may have witnessed the entire incident and could relay what they saw….

Have not read any comment about the incident that happened before the start of yesterday's game.... anybody attend the game that saw/can attest to what happened???
Have heard that that there were a couple of woman who stood for the playing of the black anthem (guess that's what it is called) and sat for our national anthem... Apparently a fan in attendance took offense at this and called/shouted them out on this with some pretty harsh language.... security came in and he was escorted out of the Hart! Guessing he probably was a vet and took offense at what they did...
Anyone in attendance to verify/corroborate???1

Less than 3 weeks to opening day and the '24 roster has not been posted yet (every other spring sport has their updated roster available) - I call that sloppy Season-opener in about two weeks at W&M (will HC70 be in attendance?). Still no roster posted. Hearing that HC70 will indeed be making the 2 hr and 45 minute trip to the8r Bill and Mary game!!!

AU's height and athleticism is far superior to what we have.... HC70 in attendance! Road Warrior that he is!!! Unless he's moved since the last time I ran into him (as is quite possible as it's probably been a decade or longer), this is practically a home game for him. Don't know that he has moved since you saw him, but, yes, this a home game for him.... very short commute!!!

Nelson liked Wilbar over JVB? Is it an accepted fact that Coach Nelson made no effort to get Vander Baan? We will likely never know Coach Nelson's opinion regarding the two. We do know that Wilbar spent part of a season here and Vander Baan #2 did not. No matter what the coaching staff was thinking, I don't think it's likely that any coaching staff would publicly say, "we wanted "Kid A" but settled for "Kid B". Not a great way to start a relationship with a member of your program It is a fact that Bill Carmody and staff were interested in JVB and called/were in contact with him. It is also a fact that when Carmody left and the Nelson era began, that line of communication ceased and JVB was not contacted by Nelson/staff. One can surmise what one wants as to JVB vs SW, but the two aforementioned facts are true.

I’m a bit surprised FHCBC is making Dean Kennedy his OC. You took the words right out of my mouth!!! I was not impressed with the play calling this year... maybe there were reasons behind it that we did not know about... but certainly a big drop off from Coach Smith!!! Good luck to them!!!

I've noticed 2 sets of flights from/to JMU today, with the 2nd set to land this evening before heading back. I'm assuming it's for Bob's family, but if anyone is around campus, can you keep an eye out for any missing coaches. It's the new shuttle service, the PE, short for the Poacher's Express, not to be confused with the Polar Express!!! 😀

George Blaney behind the bench tonight. Is Bo hurt? Also the Perrys right near him. Ronnie the elder is 91 at this point! In addition I think I saw Vicens and Nairus as well, quite a collection of our best!!! Good thing a ruckus didn't break out on the floor.... Michael would have settled it!!!
