Promises, promises. "Doctor, I keep saying the same things over and over again about something that happened decades ago and nothing changes. How come? I thought that by my being redundant that we could re-write history." We get it and, hard for you to believe, but most of us agree with you that it was a mistake to turn down the Big East. Fr. Brooks is dead and my guess is that on his death bed he still thought he made the right decision. He was president. Neither you nor I were. I am willing to concede that maybe as president he had a broader view than I do about what was "right" for Holy Cross. [I'm not giving Boroughs the same latitude about other, unspoken matters. In part, because no one asked and I did not offer a Big East opinion. For more recent decisions, he knows where I and hundreds of others stand.]

The announcers at the game never said anything about the HC lead before the start of the 2nd half. This was a PC broadcast You had one Sox broadcaster (O'Brien) doing the HC/PC game and one doing the UMass/Harvard (Tim Neverett) game at the same time. Can you believe it? Harvard beat @umass.74-71.

Carmody is a fine coach....as nht mentioned and people texted me at the game, we are up 4 at halftime and Fox Sports doesn't even make mention of us....we are a non-entity in the d1 hoop world today sadly, no matter what we do really I noticed that...and the idea that HC has "no length"...if the announcer said it once, he said it (in a variety of forms) about three dozen times (and that number is conservative). Can someone please teach him a second vocabulary word? If he was doing the Umass game, with their center, Holloway (6-11, 310!), he would have been talking about "width" too Don't remember a guy wider on a college basketball court; Shaq hadn't really filled out at LSU.

A couple or three minor points and then I will keep my counsel. I am a little tired of this "we are playing sophomores" mantra. As I recall, PC was playing at least 2 freshmen at guard. And our sophomores are well experienced more than most sophs. ... Amen! Especially considering that ZERO of Carmody's first five recruits (2 from the current Senior class, 3 from the current Junior class) are contributing to this team. You don't get to have horrific recruiting results like that and then use youth as an excuse. Correct. What you often see in bad programs is a year or two after "we're young", is that "we're still young"...and if that's the case, he should go.

Not joining the Big East was so stupid. Tried to be an Ivy school academically and it never happened. Holy Cross could be just like Providence in basketball playing in the Big East. Football also has to ditch the PL

HC was in the game but came apart in the latter parts of the second half. PC went zone, and also went full-court, 3-high press. We were getting the ball over half court on average, just below 20 secs left on the shot clock. Lots of loopy passes to beat the press. Sure, we didn't turn the ball over much out of it, but we took our sweet time getting into the offensive set, and didn't seem to force PC to play catch-up once we crossed midcourt. Their zone in the half court set wasn't too big of an issue. We had some good passes down low and missed a couple runners/really close shots that we should have hit wide open. It also allowed us to shoot three-pointers nearly at-will, and is how we got back into the game with about 5 minutes left.
The issue at the end was a ton of poor passes... the short variety directly to a defender, the low variety pinging off hands and feet to a defender, the air-mailed passes out of bounds over an HC wing player... and some missed shots. I think on the last possession alone HC missed 4 or 5 pretty decent outside shots and got the rebound each time. I think it's a combination of age, experience, nerves, being on the road, and being a "winning" team. A winning team finds a way to beat a vulnerable, favored team on the road. Does a coach make a winning team? Does winning make a winning team? Chicken and egg... but these are the games that separate a fringe program from one that the basketball world knows and respects.

Tough loss. Down 2 with 4:48 left against a solid Big East team- this was a winnable game and I believe this team is good enough to win games like this.
And what a great atmosphere in Providence. From pre-game festivities up on Federal Hill to a great game atmosphere at the DD Center. Lots of HC folks at the game.
I hope we play this game EVERY year!

Back now. WiFi connection issues at the Dunk. I’m surprised they don’t use a hard line. Hardline was used as usual from the start. It died or became disconnected somewhere under the stands that that could not be quickly located. Went to WiFi back-up. Sometimes it works fine - did at Harvard for FB; sometimes it doesn't - especially in older roofed concrete structures like the Dunk when many devices are connected.

Not an especially large crowd last night for a PC home game. Just under half capacity at 6,042. Even better atmosphere at the bigger crowd games, especially Big East conference games and URI every other year.

a big difference in the two second half stats is that last night's misses were far easier shots

I agree the shots looked easier and it was hard to watch. My personal belief is that it is up to a coach put the players into positions for good shots. It is then up to the players to actually make those shots. No coach can shoot for them. Just one person's belief.

FWIW, of the 6 power 5 Conference games CBC has played at HC, this PC game was by far the most competitive

Cooley said HC was "pesky", also called his team young, so it seems both teams may have been young Although I should have added the caveat "unless the young guys went to the NBA"; I'd say that IS a pretty good excuse for not having many veterans!

Last night reminded me of a lot of other games played by HC the last few years. A pretty decent 35 minute game. Unfortunately games are 40 minute contests.
On a positive note, most of the 35 minute games I recall were against other mid majors. I don't recall the last time I saw one of these 35 minute efforts against a P5 team (most games vs P5 aren't this good)
I also liked the fact that after the horrific period, HC didn't crumble and got it close again

Another random thought. HC forced a lot of turnovers yesterday. I know people are talking about our youth, but one of the reasons this game was competitive was because HC capitalized on PC's youth

Our D at least partly forced Cooley to sit their high scorer in the first 2 games, Reeves, for much of the second half.

My .02 so far....
If you'd have told me that we would go to Crisler Arena and hold a Michigan team who played in the NATIONAL CHAMPIOSHIP game to under 60 points and then go to Providence and be leading at the half and only lose the game by 6 points.....I'd have said you were 100% nuts !
carry on
EDIT: 9 points to PC....point remains ( thanks rgs )

I know people are talking about our youth, but one of the reasons this game was competitive was because HC capitalized on PC's youth I did think that aspect of the game was quite encouraging. Rebounding 25-29 was respectable; even got 11 ORs vs their 12.
