At this stage, an all-PL team of Mahoney, Nelson, Kostecka, Floyd, Sestina looks right. But there are no reps there from either Lehigh or Colgate, so one of those five (likely Floyd) is on the bubble. Yes, it will be a tough selection this year. Tejada and Burns will draw support. Maybe some support for Rayman and/or Ivanauskas as well. Having said that, Burns missed last night's game with what is described as a lower leg injury. No word as to how serious it it. I think some magazines suggested Rayman as a potential POY. However, his effectiveness, at least as measured by key statistics, has declined in almost every area: shooting percentage (2 PT, 3PT, FT), blocks, steals, rebounds, scoring.....

However, his effectiveness, at least as measured by key statistics, has declined in almost every area: shooting percentage (2 PT, 3PT, FT), blocks, steals, rebounds, scoring..... Yes, with his play thus far I don't see him as a candidate. The reason I said "maybe some support" for him is predicated on three things: (a) the possibility that Colgate gets hot and wins the league, (b) the possibility that Rayman starts producing at or above his form from last year, and (c) voters remember they supported him as a preseason All-PL first-teamer. When I posted, I was also thinking of the possibility of Burns having an extended absence, which would have eliminated him as a candidate while simultaneously making Rayman a much more valuable contributor. However, since I posted it now appears that Burns' injury is minor. Btw, apparently part of Rayman's problem is often playing SF, a position he never played last year. For those who have forgotten, the PL preseason 1st team All-PL group was Nelson, Floyd, Sestina, Tejada, and Rayman. Now Kostecka, Burns, and Mahoney have emerged as candidates.

Well, Loyola beats Colgate in overtime...…
Kostecka was held to 13 points but freshman Kenny Jones came off the bench to score 16 points in 21 minutes of play.
Loyola is 3-0 in PL OT games thus far.

The two Mass. schools may be bringing up the rear after the slate of games today. Lehigh put up 57 in the first half against BU, and Lafayette is beating Army at the half.
We may be looking at the play-in round if things don't change in a hurry.

Lot of fouls, that's for sure - Sestina, Toomer, Newman all fouled out. American's +9 FTM is the difference as it comes to the wire. AU, 72-63, 30 tics left

Proud of our guys today. Thought we competed for 40 minutes and earned the W. Sa'eed Nelson with 20; Sam Iorio with 17 and 7; Stacy Beckton with a double-double (12 and 10 boards). Great crowd on hand at Bender.

PL has the worst officials in D1 Do you expect Teddy Valentine, Mike Eades, or John Higgins to have officiating contracts with the PL? The better the league, the better the officials.

This has been discussed hare and elsewhere several times over the years, but officials are independent contractors, not employees of a certain league. Many officials do work primarily in one or two leagues, but are free to fill in with additional games as they see fit. The power conferences pay more per game so are largely free to pick up the better officials. But schedules and geography play a role. For example, Jeff Anderson is a sought after official and has worked one or more Final Fours, but you'll see him at St. Bonaventure often if he has an open date even though the A10 pays less than the power confierences (the last time I saw the numbers) because he lives in Rochester and it's a quicker drive than New York or Philadelphia. Similarly, you will occasionally see what people consider "A10" officials working PL or MAAC games. 137 might have the current numbers but the PL is towards the bottom when it comes to pay. "PL" officials will also be working NEC games and other leagues with similar payouts.
Officiating in college basketball is similar to everything else in college basketball, those than generally pay more generally get the best people.

res, a nice explanation but the end result would seem to come out the same. That is, PL doesn't pay refs well and, as a result, you'll get the "bottom feeder" refs who aren't good enough to attract the power conferences who pay better.
So, bottom line is that while there might not be "PL refs" per se, in actuality you'll get 45's favorite ref with some frequency. I don't pay a lot of attention to the refs, despite my razzing and goading 45, but even to someone like me who doesn't focus on the refs, familiar faces in stripes are seen at the Hart Center with a certain degree of frequency.

I regularly see good high school refs who would be a step up for many PL games. The pool of good officials is not as thin as some seem to think.

Many, but not most. Some refs like to stay local because of other jobs and family issues. But, for a league schedule, they might be able to accommodate a conference like the PL. Having seen some PL refs (not most by any means, but some), IMHO it could not hurt.
