That is always a possibility. But, if he likes the program and his team mates he could start planing now for a double major. Did RJ decide not to stay at HC because of FCMB? Will HC let a student, athlete or otherwise, who has completed the requirements for graduation stay an extra year? It is easier in football to redshirt people because the season is conducted entirely within the fall semester. Isn't that what Keister did? One problem for Bucknell in football has been that the administration will not allow someone to switch to a double major and stay for a 5th year. Thus Bucknell has not had a 5th year football player for 20+ years.

HC football players unenroll (?) from school for the Spring of their Senior years, and then re-enroll for the following Fall, so they are still technically only students for 8 semesters.

They need to choose a second major or minor/concentration. Since CN is only a sophisticating he could adjust his schedule to do just that. If you are already a senior, it is almost impossible.

Niego will not have the offers of Evans or Sestina, if any. While I don't expect him to head to UConn, I wouldn't rule out some low major or even D-II team grabbing him for a year. Much will depend on how his junior and senior years go

But they won't allow a player to take a double major and stay another year. Thus no 5th year football players for over 20 years, which is an enormous disadvantage.

I have mentioned this to some posters at games. I'd like to see at least one new assistant coach come in...Somebody who has experience in some other offences and defenses..Somebody who can ADD to what Carmody does..I think to often some coaches get in a rut and don't feel comfortable doing something else..Call them stubborn, but it is what they know..Some new blood on the staff might be a breath of fresh air as far as what HC runs on both ends of the court..... I know from my experience coaching, one can learn a lot working with somebody new...I know I grew the most, coaching AAU with another HS coach, who had a different philosophy than I did...

I hope we have Connor Niego for three more healthy years. He is the early odds-on favorite to win the "Most Improved Player" next season. He put up some impressive numbers in his 127 minutes of play this year (6-14 on threes; 14-24 on twos; 50 points scored) with well more than half of those minutes against Michigan-Providence-URI, three of our tougher opponents this year.

I don't know of any HC football players who have gone the route of picking up an extra major/minor to stay for a full 5th year -- they've all gone the unenroll route, which is the same thing Bucknell players can do. It may be an "enormous disadvantage" if the PL allowed the same non-medical redshirts that more serious leagues allow, but with only medical redshirts allowed and Bucknell players having the option to unenroll, they're almost in the exact same boat as the other schools in the league for the limited number of players who would qualify for the redshirt and who the staff would want back.

Putting possible 5th year options aside for the time being, I'm just wondering what is exactly wrong with CN's foot, and if he is going to be ok going forward. Downplay his absence and/or talent/skill all you want, he offered another shooting option off the bench (and badly needed length to boot).

While I believe in free speech, could the Dean take the topic of this broader conversation down? Personally I consider it off limits and in a commercial environment those discussing this topic while the Carmody family is dealing with the most important issue, our health and those we love, I would fire all involved

We don't know if any of them are dealing with a similar situation or worse at home.

If no critical commentary on holy cross basketball is allowed, and posters can’t separate something personal (and very, very unfortunate) from something professional, I suggest the Men’s Baskstball section of Crossports is shut down. It’s the only way to ensure that there no discussion of CBCs coaching performance.
I wonder when we’ll know one way or the other the decision of HC and/or CBC? Assuming a few more days of no news will mean that nothing is changing for next year.

A coach gets paid for the whole season which includes pre-season, practice during the week and setting game plans, if he has to miss some road games he gets paid. Why should anyone question that is beyond me. Let's hope that his wife is doing better.

I've enjoyed reading all the comments about seeking a new basketball coach. Yes, a lot depends on recruiting. Unfortunately, recruiting a top notch athlete to Holy Cross is a very difficult task, if not an impossible task. Keep in mind, Holy Cross is a very small liberal arts college with a limited number of academic majors. There are no garbage majors like sports management, recreation sciences, communications, etc. like there are in the universities that successfully recruit big time athletes (e.g. UConn). In addition, Holy Cross does have not a summer session. Big time athletic factories, like UConn, have 2 summer sessions, which is when a lot of athletes take courses. Please also keep in mind your top notch high school basketball player has a career goal of the NBA, not medical school or law school. A lot of these same athletes would never make it through the door of Holy Cross's admission's office. Plus, if Holy Cross wants a coach to turn the program around somehow, you're going to have to pay him big bucks with a lot of perks. We all know this will never happen. In summary, we are no longer living in the Bob Cousy basketball era. College sports is now a big time business. Therefore, having a highly successful basketball program may be just wishful thinking.

To make my opinion, as 1 single poster, crystal clear: I am in no way saying the coaching (or player performance) cannot be critiqued. It is, indeed fair game imho. In fact, I feel the staff needs to be much more flexible going forward. However, calls for his immediate dismissal, and discussing new coaches when there has been no evidence whatsoever that this might happen, in my view is not necessary given his personal situation. Maybe there will be news of some sort in the coming weeks. There are PLENTY of things to discuss about the program right now; why is it SO important to speak to this at this time? I don't get it.

If he decides to return next year but doesn’t make road trips, do we know if he doesn’t take payment for those games missed? Not curiticizing, just curious since it’s a unique situation. Assuming a few more days of no news will mean that nothing is changing for next year. I suggested we hit the pause button on this board when discussing retention issues given the health issue in his family. There is a fine line between performance and retention discussions and think the group should be respectful of what his family is dealing with- another way to think about it — this is the Lenten season, so give up the retention discussion for Lent. You will feel better when Easter arrives.

I totally agree that we stop the retention discussion. Also, I think it hurts HC and its ability to attract people to coach if the school persists in having a revolving door for coaches who are fired and hired every few years. I would like to see more successful teams at HC but possibly some of the impediments to success are beyond the reach of the coach or even the school. Coach Carmody is widely considered a fine coach. I suggest we give it a rest for now and see how next season plays out. LoveHC While having a “revolving door” of coaches is certainly not good for the program, having a below average coach who is nowhere near the right fit for the job (what we have now) is far worse. Simply holding on to Carmody because we also got the two hires before him wrong does nothing to help the program.

If I may, I would suggest watching Belmont in the Ohio Valley Championship today against Ja Morant & Murray State. Belmont doesn’t have “too notch athletes” or “top notch high school players,” but they have a coach who actually gets it and play a very fundamentally sound brand of basketball. They are 26-4 this year and ranked right around 50 by KenPom. This is the type of program that we were building under RW, but everything has since been gutted by the trio of Kearney, Brown and Carmody. Time to start over again.

Why should anyone question that is beyond me. Let's hope that his wife is doing better. Not questioning that he should be paid at all. He absolutely should be. So save the comments that that’s what I was insinuating. But it’s an extremely unique profession and situation. And every single poster on this board is hoping that his wife is not only doing better, but doing extremely well and progressing towards perfect health. What’s beyond me is that there are some who have insinuated posters are some kind of monsters and “should retire” for talking about basketball results which can and should be discussed completely independently of Coach’s personal life. I know with 100% certainty that even the posters who want to talk about Holy Cross basketball performance have immediate family members dealing with cancer. I know many feel that discussion of performance in between the lines is fair, and job retention is not. I 100% agree. But there are more than a few that think any critical comment or posting of statistics should be off limits. If that’s the case, the most logical solution is to disable posting until further notice.
