Holy Cross Head Men's Basketball Coach Bill Carmody Announces Retirement
Coach Bill Carmody Through The Years
WORCESTER, Mass. – After more than 40 years of coaching at the collegiate level, Holy Cross head men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody has announced his retirement. Carmody has served as the Crusaders’ head coach for the last four years and has posted a career record of 342-308. In 2016, he led Holy Cross to the Patriot League Tournament title and the school’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 1953.
“When I arrived here four years ago, I knew my decades of college coaching would likely end at Holy Cross. I could not have wished for a more fitting last stop,” said Carmody. “Holy Cross embodies what many college athletics programs struggle to deliver — commitment without compromise. This was not an easy decision. Barbara and I, as well as our two sons, have come to love Holy Cross. If I were to continue coaching, there is nowhere I’d rather be, and I will miss this place.”
Carmody’s 2015-2016 Holy Cross team won four-consecutive Patriot League Tournament games on the road to win the league crown, becoming the first team in conference history to accomplish that feat. The Crusaders downed Lehigh, 59-56, in the Patriot League championship game, before posting a 59-55 victory over Southern at the NCAA First Four in Dayton, Ohio. On Nov. 22, 2016, Carmody earned his 300th career victory when Holy Cross defeated Harvard, 63-52.
“I have admired Coach Carmody’s career from afar for a long time,” said Holy Cross director of athletics Marcus Blossom. “He has had such an impactful and remarkable career at institutions that value both athletic and academic achievement. And while I would have enjoyed the opportunity to work with such an incredible coach and leader, I know he has positioned this program for success. I wish him and his family the very best as they enter this new chapter.”
Prior to his time with the Crusaders, Carmody served as the head coach at Northwestern University for 13 seasons. He guided the Wildcats to four-consecutive winning seasons from 2008-2012, with his 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 teams both recording a then-school record 20 victories. Carmody was also selected as the Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year in 2003-2004.
Carmody was previously the head coach at Princeton University from 1996-2000. During his four-year tenure, he guided the Tigers to an overall record of 92-25 and an Ivy League mark of 50-6, while leading the team to the postseason each year. In 1997-1998, Carmody’s Princeton team finished with a 27-2 record, a top-10 national ranking and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Holy Cross will immediately commence a national search for Carmody’s replacement.
A MESSAGE FROM COACH CARMODY:
When I arrived here four years ago, I knew my decades of college coaching would likely end at Holy Cross. I could not have wished for a more fitting last stop.
Holy Cross embodies what many college athletics programs struggle to deliver — commitment without compromise.
I have been impressed with so many things: the integrity of the administration, the winning tradition and passion of former players — many of them living basketball legends, the impressive alumni support, the genuine concern for players’ well-being, and the college’s dedication to long-term success — the amazing Luth Athletic Complex is just the most obvious example.
I’m confident my staff and players will continue to make the Holy Cross community proud. We have a good combination of seasoned veterans and talented new blood. The junior class is special — as a group, they have a significant amount of meaningful game experience. My successor will be happy with this team.
I want to thank several people who have been especially helpful. First, Fr. Boroughs, who quietly makes it all happen; Nathan Pine, for hiring me and always supporting the program; Brendan Sullivan, who is not only a great administrator but a great fan; Rose Shea for her good counsel; Ann McDermott, our admissions director, for her hard work; Walter Trisdale and Shepard Allen for keeping our student-athletes healthy and strong; the men and women of the facilities department, for taking care of the details every day; and finally, my coaches, for their tireless dedication.
I congratulate and welcome Marcus Blossom, our new athletics director, and wish him nothing but the best.
This was not an easy decision. Barbara and I, as well as our two sons, have come to love Holy Cross. If I were to continue coaching, there is nowhere I’d rather be, and I will miss this place.

Beat me by a few seconds... I deleted my thread. Very odd timing. Lines up with the fiscal year, etc. But possibly tough from a search perspective. AD Blossom doesn't get much of a honeymoon.
For now, thank you Coach Carmody, and best wishes in your retirement.

Best wishes to coach Carmody and his family.
And Wow. Mid-June again. Ugggh. Let the speculation begin!

Very gracious statement by coach Carmody.
And reading between the lines, wishes and prayers for the good health of his wife.

Well, this should make some posters very, very happy, perhaps, though, for just a short time.
We have four incoming freshmen--will we keep them all?
I wish Bill Carmody and his family great health and happiness in retirement.

This is tough to see for the assistants who are likely going to be out of a job as everyone has likely already transitioned into a new position this late in the offseason.

Good that we can begin the rebuilding process (again) this season rather than prolong it another year.
Unfortunate that this decision had to wait three months, rather than happen following the conclusion of the season.

Best wishes for FHCBC and his wife on a happy and healthy retirement.
This puts HC in a very difficult spot as most of the CBB vacancies have been filled. Good luck ADMB.

I wish Bill Carmody and his family great health and happiness in retirement. In honor of your horse racing acumen I will place my wager on HC keeping four out of four. Nobody was signing up to be coached by John Wooden, they added up the pluses and minuses and picked Holy Cross as their best option knowing the Head Coach was a senior citizen. I could be wrong, of course, perhaps if it was a very close decision and the recruit has a bit of buyer's remorse or uncertainty anyways.

All four freshmen are enrolled, and Wade (for one) is on campus. Don't think there's much chance any will walk.

Joe K will most likely be the interim I hope Blossom doesn't settle for this solution until he's explored others, even at this late date.

I think as long as the players stay, the change will be a good thing. Good luck to Carmody and his family, he gave us some great moments. But I think a new face with a new system will be a good change. The players should be able to adjust and they might even like the new coach better.

Keith Wade and his circle are not happy at the moment. Do you think HC informed the recruits of Carmody's retirement ahead of the announcement? That feels like the right way to let them know, rather then find out on Twitter.

You have to think the recruits in the last 2 classes, as well as their parents, had at least entertained the thought Coach Carmody wouldn't be their head coach for four years. The fact he retired now may come as a surprise to the frosh in particular but can't be seen as a total shock. Like others have said, these kids and their families selected HC for a lot more than basketball.

It is not ideal timing but there is adequate time to secure a Coach Chesney type hire for the coming season, someone who has a lower division team on a strong upswing with much positive energy. I thought Andy Sachs was a good candidate for the last three openings because he has won everywhere as Assistant or Head Coach, but Holy Cross wouldn't dare hire a current Community College Coach.
