As we look ahead, here’s what the roster for next year looks like assuming the Wilbar report in the other thread is correct. I just used the class currently listed on the roster to put guys in classes, recognizing one or more of them may have a potential extra year of eligibility if there is mutual agreement to use it. By my count, we have 3 more scholarships to give.
Seniors (6): Montgomery Octave Tse Dorsey Rabinovich Coulibaly
Juniors (1): Kenney
Sophs (2): Kirkwood Batchelder
Frosh (1): Nugent

Even Willard would have a tough time putting up wins with that group. Competitive, yes. Wins, very few.

The way I look at it, we have a chance to add 9 new scholarship players between now and the start of the 2024-25 season. Hopefully we hire someone to use them who understands how to sell HC and how to win games.

A few of those seniors are eligible for another year if they wanted it (Corona year).

A few of those seniors are eligible for another year if they wanted it (Corona year). I mentioned possible extra years. Would have to be mutual agreement. Not sure how much mutual agreement there would be with a new coach with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions. Could help with class balance if a couple of those guys stay an extra year.

Bo is probably someone that the next coach would want to stick around, but with all of the losing he's experienced throughout his career, could see him wanting to do a grad year elsewhere to get a taste of what a winning program feels like. Louth is a complete and total mystery to me.

Not a situation where it's going to take ~3 years for a new coach to shape the program with the kind of players/style he wants.
Honestly, jobs 1-2 are to retain Batch and Nugent. Do that, and everything else is negotiable.

It’s much less important than it once was but I have a dream that one day we’ll again have most guys stay for four years. Crazy, I know.

I believe it is possible if we can create the right winning environment and a culture built on the team and the Holy Cross experience. We might lose a player or two on each end, the better player and the one that gets little time, but the roster will stabilize.
We need to recruit talented players that value the complete Holy Cross experience and the portal concerns, for the most part will improve.

One selling point for recruits will be the opportunity for lots and lots of playing time.

A selling point, but not a staying point.

That may be a good thing as they are committing to the HC experience, including alumni networking and perhaps will be more abt to stick around.

There is a minuscule number of recruits who would ignore the coaching situation.

The good thing about the current situation might mean a continuation of the current group who value what Holy Cross represents. If we improve the talent over the next year or two, with the same type of commitment and pride in being part of Holy Cross, we might be able to progress faster than planned.

If these kids for the most part run through walls for the program as currently constituted; you have to think they'd do even more of that in different circumstances.

Our (if it's him, and I think it is) former basketball poster has opined that someone can get something out of the players we have. Hope he's right and Ray isn't.

Bumping this thread.
We still have three scholarship roster spots for next season.
Never mind recruiting kids out of high school -- how will Nelson hit the portal if there isn't some clarity on his job security?
Assuming he is gone in the next week or two, the next coach will have to hit the ground running. In fact, it's imperative the next coach is hired relatively swiftly so he can round out the roster with kids who are in the portal.

Doesn't Singleton make 11 kids for next year, thus leaving only 2 spots?

A change in staff will no doubt create more roster openings, not to imply in any way the change shouldn't occur. Just the way things are these days.

Given the enormous challenge posed by next year's roster, it's important that the next coach has an actual track record of "coaching up" what he inherits and instilling confidence in his players from the get-go.
Such coaches are out there.
