I know I'll take some heat for starting this, but trust me, I know the only thing we need to focus on is Saturday against Georgetown. I'll be there watching and also constantly checking my phone watching Lehigh beat Lafayette. But, the reason for this post is pure speculative fun. If we get a chunk of our seniors back for a fifth year, obviously including Sluka and Coker, it will make for a very exciting season. I think they would be seriously competing for a national championship. Anyone agree?

Well, if we beat Georgetown AND Lehigh beats Lafayette, we'll be talking turkey and postseason.
Ok, I'll bite, but it is one game at a time. To me, it depends on the two stars you mentioned as well as the O-line. LB could be interesting with Bolden as a Sr and Monte as a Jr. I'm confident in the defensive improvements/adjustments we've made this year. We have three 5th year linemen: McMurturie, Hanson, and Daddona. Potentially would return McCauley and Schon. Need the big boys blocking as well as we did this year.

I think they would be seriously competing for a national championship. Anyone agree? I'm not at all sure that next year will be any different than this year. I honestly thought that this season would be "the one" with the return of Jake to 100%; Matt with another year of experience; and an entire experienced offensive line returning. Injuries and too many close losses have turned a potentially great season into a fall-off from last season. So, not to sound overly pessimistic, but not sure how I can believe we'll do better than the prior season. I do think our W/L record will likely be better than this year as the close calls have to even out and hopefully all those 3 point losses will be 3 point wins. I am optimistic if Matt moves on that Joe P will be better than adequate. I also think the defense will be better with the experience they gained through the school of hard knocks. Bottom line: maybe a better record than this year but not a better team, if that makes sense?

I think next year's team will probably be noticeably better on the defensive side of the ball. Offense would depend on who comes back definitely.
So to me, next year could very well be a better team. Our team this year was broken and incomplete, partly due to injury, but still incomplete.

Ok, now it’s time to look ahead. I don’t think Chesney is going anywhere. So which seniors are coming back and how soon will we know? Anyone have a lens on that timeline? If Sluka and Coker come back, we will be top 8 next year.

Of course they probably know as much as we do (which is to say not much)

7-10 days this will all be settled on who stays and goes. Portal opens 12-4 so any FCS players looking to jump will announce quickly.

They are working on prob 10 5th years. But no clue who comes back or who doesn’t.
We love Chesney. And he’s great. I just think we are making too big of a deal with an FCS guy jumping to P5. It’s not common at all. And as Midwest as stated. There are a TON of people who will want that job.
Are MAC jobs in play, etc? He will have interview opps - I’m sure of that.
In the next 4.5 weeks they have to figure out 5th years, see if any 6th year possibilities. See if any underclassmen jump in the portal. See how much money they will have for the second signing period, get the 16 current verbals signed on 12/20.
Very big 4.5 weeks for the future of the program.

NIL dollars might play in the decisions for some as well

Coker’s Instagram post leads me to believe he won’t be back next season. It is a great post by a great kid. Best of luck to him wherever he goes!

He is looking at a 6th-7th round pick
If he moves up he won’t be back
If he slips he might return
He and his family will make a great decision, whatever it might be

I tried to copy and paste it but I’m not that savvy. Anyway, it is basically a heartfelt post about what an honor it has been to be a Crusader, etc. Hard to say what the future holds, but it feels more like a “goodbye” than a “maybe we ride again next season”.

Yes, it is probably hard for some to believe that there are some posters (moi) who don't do instagram, Facebook, X, etc.
So, please post what he wrote. Share with the Luddites here.

No words can accurately describe the amazing opportunity it's been to play football here at Holy Cross. I am truly thankful and blessed to have shared the field with these guys. Not to mention the incredible staff, coaches, trainers and people who have molded us into amazing young men. This team has not only made me a better player, but it has made me a better person. I am honored to say that I am a Holy Cross Crusader and will cherish these memories forever. I love each and every one of the guys on this team and am so excited to see what we all accomplish in the future.
I did it! Proud of myself. Haha.

My personal guesses for returning next year.... Coker......0% Sluka.....40% Chesney.....50% how about Schon, Newman, and McCauley? He line has been so good, that would be really stabilizing no matter who else left. I'd sure hope Ches is more than 50%!

If Chesney were to leave, he's gonna do it quick. Simply for recruiting issues at potential new school before first signing day. What would really throw a wrench in everything, Ches leaves and does he poach a handful of kids???
Coker has a real chance to move on to FBS program or give the NFL a chance!!
Sluka, do you come back if the majority of O Line leave. Not easy to find 5 guys who can hold blocks long enough for Matt to improvise the way he does..
I think this thing sorts itself out pretty soon. The question is are we prepared for any or all of this if it happens??
Lets all hope for the best..

They take a beating and some may just have their bodies say enough is enough.

If a student plays four seasons at HC and graduates he can attend any graduate school he wants to and play for as many additional seasons he can. That is not poaching and if it happens to be at a school a former HC coach has moved to, that is fine and I'll root for them both. Undergraduates have a right to attend whatever college they choose so poaching really isn't possible. It's not ok to try to handcuff a student athlete to a college he doesn't want to attend and claim the current college is a victim if he transfers. That's what the Portal and NIL are all about, the rights of student athletes. Didn't mean to jump on you.

The vibes I got in social media the past week were Sluka and Coker are likely done here. Nothing concrete, just reading the tea leaves.
Chesney being named by Thamel does kind of worry me. Thankfully that's a fairly long early list so I won't panic until I hear about an interview.
Should Chesney go, id take a look at bringing back Chris Smith to keep as much continuity in the program as possible. There are rumblings the Giants are gonna fire a lot of assistants, so if things move quickly with BC we should at least have time to react.
