Syracuse reporters did a post firing show, and there's this that came up (timestamped already) www.youtube.com/live/ltCxmAo8xdo?si=eYMKU1_Ndj0WjP8I&t=1789"I am going to say this. OK? Little nugget. A little tease for our candidate show, and I texted this to our insiders. Bob Chesney, Holy Cross. Just keep an eye on that name. OK? Just keep an eye on that name. People tell me, he's well liked by people that are making this decision. Just gonna say that." The tone in which this was said is revealing and interesting. You know that Chesney is a guy they've probably had their eye on for a while now.

Yeah the vibe I got from that tone was he's very much their top choice.
Sluka entering the portal and them needing a QB makes me even more nervous since that'd be a pretty solid opening move for them.

Interesting comment in that YouTube link Drjack posted:
That's key. We know BC is a great coach at every level he's been at. Having lived in Syracuse and seen SU up close and having a little knowledge of BC, it does not seem to be a good fit. While virtually nothing shocks me anymore, if BC ends up there, I'd be greatly surprised. (And they don't deserve him!)

If Chesney and Sluka wind up in Syracuse, it will look like a package deal and that would not be good thing, esp for Chesney.

Agree about that cart, but It could look like the Cuse said we will take you ONLY IF you bring Sluka along.

Happens all the time. Players have relationships with coach. If BC goes any where, you can guarantee one or more players will follow (especially grad transfers). I don't remember saying Lincoln Riley or Deion Sanders got the job because they were bringing a QB. Syracuse would be lucky to have Coach Chesney. I certainly hope he stays. I think that Syracuse will try to get a big name from the NFL or former p5 coach. I am not getting too worried yet, but if he does get the change to go P5, and he decided to take it - I would thank him for all he has done and wish him luck on his well-earned promotion.

Nobody thinks you're giving a coach a 5+ year contract because he's bringing along an FCS grad transfer QB who has one year of eligibility. Sorry, that's ridiculous.

Ray, hoops might be influenced by the story of HC basketball coach Jack Donahue coming to Holy Cross from Power Memorial and the rumors were he got the job because he was going to bring along a kid named Lew Alcindor with him. Lew came for a visit to the Holy Cross campus and got a standing ovation in Kimball by the assembled student body.
As my brother told me, “everyone stood up and gave him a standing ovation, everyone except me. I’m not giving some punk high school kid a standing ovation no matter who he is.” 😂😂😂
Maybe Lewie saw my brother sitting and said “I’m not going here where I’m not appreciated.” 😉
In any rate, it was obviously NOT a package deal but that didn’t stop the rumors at the time for Donahue/Alcindor.

I'm reading their AD's presser, and unfortunately, Chesney does fit the description he used nearly to a T. I hope we're able to keep him. Bob deserves a better program than Syracuse. Babers earned $4 million in compensation for leading one of the worst football teams in Syracuse school history, according to tax forms the school released to Syracuse.com on Friday.

Yeah, just zero way we could compete with P5 money, and that's even after they likely discount his contract some due to being a first time FBS coach.
Thankfully, I'm pretty confident that his extension last year increased any potential buyout.

Thankfully, I'm pretty confident that his extension last year increased any potential buyout. If a P5 school wants Chesney paying even a couple year’s salary (less than a million dollars)wouldn’t matter. Might be an issue at a MAC school if it the buyout was onerous enough.

Is it not usually the team that wants the new team, not the coach, who pays the buyout ?

Sorry, I meant at least we get a nice chunk of change if/when he does leave.
I didn't mean to imply it'd be enough of a deterrent to keep him at HC, though it does read that way. My bad.

This Syracuse outlet has an interestingly phrased headline (don't know if this has already been posted to Crossports): With his Coach a Rumored Candidate for Syracuse job, Holy Cross Star QB Hits Transfer Portal (report) Syracuse, N.Y. -- With Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney a rumored candidate for the head coaching position at Syracuse, four of his star players with the Crusaders hit the transfer portal on Monday.
The list of Holy Cross players exploring their options is headlined by quarterback Matthew Sluka. Other Holy Cross players that placed their name in the portal include linebacker Jacob Dobbs, defensive back Terrence Spence, punter Matthew Haughney and offensive lineman Eric Schonwww.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2023/11/with-his-coach-a-rumored-candidate-for-syracuse-job-holy-cross-star-qb-hits-transfer-portal-report.html

There should be a different name for the portal when it comes to grad students

Double his salary with an extension or just make it $750 k for ten years with a buyout of 4 years by the new school. We get that with a buy game. If that isn't enough then so be it.

Good example of a bad, misleading headline.

PLEASE STOP! I understand Jacob HAS to leave, doesn’t have the ability to stay at Holy Cross another season. Matt can, but understand he may well want to go to a larger program. Coach Chesney doesn’t have to go and I’m willing to bet he doesn’t BUT . . . . . If he does leave, I hope to heavens it is NOT to Syracuse. I detest that school from “roll ‘em up Benny” days and having lived in the area. Also, we play them September 28 next year and I don’t want to see him on the opposite sideline.
