Railers Home Games Attendance Game #1 10/14/17 SAT 12,135 Game #2 10/31/17 TUE 2,130 Game #3 11/03/17 FRI 3,411 Game #4 11/04/17 SAT 4,132 Average 5,452 Avg without opening night just over 3200. That’s probably around what it will be the rest of this year. And if you also remove Halloween night, it’s 3,771, or about 25% higher than the average attendance of HC’s games at the DCU center last year. Sample size is way too small, but if the Railers put together an entertaining product/package (which the haters and losers appear to think is impossible), the Central Mass hockey crowd will likely attend in the same numbers that’ll they would for games against Vermont, UNH, UMASS Lowell, etc. Or maybe even greater number because HC cannot market like a full-time minor league team. Families aren’t going to think ‘we’re not going to watch the Railers play the East Nowhere Icehawks, we’ll only go if it’s Holy Cross against Vermont!’ If it’s an entertaining environment and a product that is at least above average, young families won’t care who’s playing.

Conveniently left out of the above post is that UMass, BC, BU, Merrimack, Lowell, Prov, and UNH fans will travel to Worcester to see their teams play, but they aren't traveling to Worc to see a game vs some club from a rust-belt sh*t hole they no nothing about.
And the "losers" are those on this board who do nothing but pummel every single decision made by the current admin, even when it's not warranted by any measure.

Amusingly you speak as though these are facts that have been studied, analyzed, and tested by your sources, and it's a proven fact that all of these schools have rabid fan basses who will travel across the region every weekend in the winter to see their hockey teams play, including making trips to Worcester to see them play against what will be a doormat program in the Hockey East until significantly more resources are dedicated to the program (resources that were pulled out of the $95M investment in facilities). However, the reality is that BC (4,752) and Lowell (5,115) are the only teams who have averaged over 4,000 in attendance in this young season (before winter weather hits), and of the 21 games that BU, Merrimack, UMASS, Providence, UNH, and Northeastern have played on Friday/Saturday nights against Hockey East or similar (i.e. Quinnipiac and Ohio State included, Sacred Heart not included), only THREE have surpassed the 4,000 mark: - Union @ BU (4,056)
- Denver @ BU (4,369)
- Lowell @ UNH (4,186)
The idea that it is out of the question for the Railers to draw somewhere in the 3,000-3,500 range on a consistent basis, with some special occasions getting them to the 4-5k ballpark, and then pulling in steady revenue from their rink rentals and other business ventures in Worcester to survive for several years while the Hockey East opportunity disappears may be some serious wishful thinking. This is the same wishful thinking that assumes we can snap our fingers, join the Hockey East, field a competitive program, and draw 4-5k people automatically.

Based on Icecats/Sharks history, weekends will draw better than mid-week. Still a small sample size. We only have one mid-week data point. That was Halloween. I would guess that they'd have a smaller crowd than a typical school/work night The Railers are still a shiny new toy. No telling how many people will be sucked in for the long haul. Going forward, attendance will drop off somewhat as the newness wears off and a baseline is developed. The other half of this question is how many fans are required to break even. If they can break even at 1500 fans, they're all set. If break even is 3000ish, they're treading water and might be in trouble

The Railers will die a quick and painful death, much like every other Pro Sport in Worcester. The team can do as much reach out, hand shaking, baby kissing, third grade reading, restaurant and rink building, t-shirt giving away and general ass kissing around the city as they want, but they will fail in short order. I had to shoot at the new rink last week...BRUTAL sightlines for fans.

Maybe just post if attendance on a Saturday is outside of the 4K-5K range and if a mid-week game is outside of the 2K-3K range and if a Friday night game is outside the 3K-4K range.

No, lost 6-3. My first game, they put on a good show and the quality of hockey was much better than I thought it would be.

Attendance was 4700 last night That's because bobby orr was there. They will be gone in less than 5 years. Promotions will boost attendance. This is minor league hockey and there will be lots of promotions. Some promotions will do better than others. Personally I think having the greatest hockey player of all time drop the first puck is a better draw than free bobbleheads. Someone with little kids might prefer the bobbleheads It looks like the numbers hc92 threw out will be about average for now. In the ECHL, no concern about the club being dragged away closer to the parent club. The Railers also have the advantage of not having to rent ice time for practice (barring some accounting hocus-pocus between Rucker's business units). Hopefully this level of attendance is suitable to make the enterprise worthwhile

Promotions for minor league teams are a big selling point and can make a team more family friendly. That has long been true in minor league baseball. Of course, colleges are also picking up on this (the numbers of shirts given away to fans and the games during time-outs at the Sacrd Heart game had me wondering is we d as much at HC home games. I would hope so.

HC gives away tee shirts, though not as many as Sacred Heart did Also, - put on a uniform and make a lay-up (race between little kids) - hit layup, foul shot, and 3 pointer - most foul shots in 30 seconds - multiple choice trivia - free carwash to lucky row not a game or giveaway, but frequently have some little kids youth hoops mini-game at half time. Guarantees an extra 25 people at game

That is good to hear. Is Iggy ever pitted against a visiting mascot in some contest? I think he could take the Pioneer I saw at SHU.

I remember the Mountain Hawk at the Bucknell game in the Hart a number of years ago (with 2 busloads of BU students) back when RW was coaching.

Does anyone know why they were playing a game in the middle of the day on a Tuesday?
