ACTP --
Thanks. I'm aware of that. I recently got an alumni e-mail from RCHS that highlighted both Briscoe and Silva.

Thanks for sharing scs. That's the most in-depth reporting I've ever read.

Always 2 sides to story. Love to hear the coaches' candid comments. Pretty soon coaches and drill sergeants won't be able to yell at all.
Fwiw Coach C hurled an f bomb against a player in a timeout huddle. Maybe that' why he has closed practices. He also cut Kostecka loose. But who cares. If a player is a snowflake, he ain't gonna be a very good player. I'm all for coaches and drill sergeants verbally "ecouraging" players and recruits, like Frank Martin.

thanks for posting this great story, scs. if anyone was not yet convinced that successful big time college basketball was a cesspool, you need not look further. run-offs happen everywhere - and happened at hc when rw arrived - but collins is a jerk from all indications i've ever heard. his inability to control his emotions (as a player, and now, coach) might have prevented northwestern from advancing in the ncaa tournament. one coach who i have to give credit to for seemingly not running players off is our own bill carmody. there were numerous players from the previous regime that would have been run-off candidates when he arrived, to say the least. instead, he's restocked through a more conventional and ethical route with next year's class that will likely define his long-term success at hc.

Not sure who the runoff candidates BC inherited were unless you think seniors Morgan and Baker were candidates, if you're looking for current candidates look no further than 3 of the 4 Carmody recruits, not to mention the 5th who got tossed out of school.

I have no clue about the circumstances, but Baker left the bench just before the end of the season Personally, I think it's cheesy for a new coach to run off hold-over kids he doesn't want. I suppose you could make an argument that the senior who is out for the year or the one with 10 career points are candidates, but I agree there weren't multiple holdover candidates. On the other hand, in terms of current candidates, I would go with more like 0 of the 4 Carmody recruits. Even if we're not happy with the development or consistency, 3 out of 4 have shown they are capable of contributing and the 4th was just a freshman who really wasn't given much opportunity. I'll also throw in on the 4th, HC is a little lean on big guys who have actually participated in a college program. He is going to need some minutes next year. Anyhow, it seems more than a little harsh to label any of them a candidate to be run-off

Not too bright of coaches to make a bunch of calls to a kid in a short time period, so easy to document.......unless, of course, they really don't care.

The article mentions this and has a pretty good explanation for that even (though you don't have to buy that to be fair) But hey, if you put more stock in that then forged time cards and text messages with coaches that's on you.

Before he gets called the next John wooden; though his overall winning % at 63 is good and each of his 5 years at South Carolina have seen an improvement, his SEC record in 5 years is .422 with the last 2 seasons reaching 3rd place in a conference rated not as highly as the others in the big 5.

Fair, but South Carolina had also not won an NCAA Tournament game since 1973, and had only been to one NCAA Tournament from 1999-2012 (when Martin was hired). To say they don't have much of a basketball tradition is an understatement. (As a benchmark, Bill Carmody's Big 10 winning % at Northwestern was .318) While certainly not John Wooden, Martin's had a pretty darn good career at two difficult places to win (Kansas State & USC). While Huggins certainly laid some of the foundation at Kansas State, prior to Martin getting the head job in 2008, they had not won an NCAA tournament game since 1988. In his five years there, they made to the NCAA tournament 4 out of 5 tries, making it to the round of 32 in 3 of the 4 appearances, with the 4th appearance going all the way to the Elite 8. In his 5 trips to the NCAA Tournament (over 10 seasons as a head coach), his record is 10-4 and he has yet to lose in the first round. While he may not be a fit with every egomaniac Athletic Director or fan base (Indiana, as a recent example), there aren't many better coaches out there who would be available for a true high level job. I'd give a long, hard look at him if I were Georgetown.

It's ironic that you talk about South Carolina's losing basketball history to promote Coach Martin's recent success there but dismiss Northwestern's pathetic history when evaluating Coach Carmody's years at that school.

SCS just to be fair, let's give the university a chance to respond. Like any large corporation it is at a great disadvantage in these media contests. Let's wait to see what happens at the trial and what facts are developed. Could be that Northwestern is the worst University this side of Louisville or it could be good Johnny is not pure as the driven snow. Let's also remember that Johnny was allowed to matriculate free of charge at Northwestern for four years. In essence he's no different than any player who sits on the bench for four years at American University and collects his scholarship. American University just had a number of players transfer. Is it possible your coach is a problem? Don't know. But it's only fair to get the university's side of it at some point.

Um, Frank Martin actually won at both schools, despite their history. A fairly important thing, IMHO. Also, despite your typical jumping to conclusions/fake news facts, I've never "dismissed" Northwestern's history. It certainly provides context, but 0-13 is still 0-13.

On the surface, he hasn't coached with any academic standards before, but he appears to have really strong integrity, would not be pushed around by John Thompson, and it's not like Georgetown has had a history of having the highest standards for their basketball players (see: Iverson, Allen).

A mismatch His screaming and berating players would not sit well in the media center of DC. John Thompson, who still has great influence there would not approve his hiring, imo

I've heard Martin claim that the screaming is all positive, but I'm sure it's somewhere in the middle, or more likely towards the end that you describe, and certainly not for everyone. But Georgetown isn't going to attract their dream candidates, including the latest rumor that they went after Mike Brey and Shaka Smart, which is laughable.

Why would Martin want to go to Georgetown? At this point, South Carolina might be a more attractive job than Georgetown. I suspect he would aim higher if he's going to move on.
