I just returned from the game, a 70 mile trip one way. It was my first basketball game in about 5 years, and I was not impressed. I left when Holy Cross was down by 10 in the second half, as I had enough. Although I'm glad the Cross pulled it out, I just could not watch this type of basketball. The Cross missed too many easy chip shots, and their rebounding is totally unsatisfactory. Plus, I hate watching that Princeton style of offense, because it is very slow paced. When I left, I thought Siena was going to blow the game open. To beat this team by only 3 on your own home court is not a good sign. First, great that you made that omg drive to see the game. But, when is winning not a "good sign?" I don’t think anyone said “winning is not a good sign.” Playing poorly is not a good sign. If you play poorly and lose by 2 or play the same poor basketball and win by 1, you still played poorly. The team has now played poorly three games in a row.

Siena hit only 3 baskets in the last 6:30 of the game (for 8 points).

But, when is winning not a "good sign?" (Perhaps it was your departure that inspired the team as they came back to win.) If you thought that Siena was going to blow the game open, perhaps you don't know this Holy Cross team. I hope your next visit to the Hart is more enjoyable for you. My half empty glass is 180 degrees from wstruz'. If you didn't like the shooting or the rebounding, show up on a night when HC loses the rebounding totals by more than 2 or the nights where it shoots less than 50% on twos AND threes. What I thought was kind of poor for quite a while was the defense.

The last two games were pretty similar; down ten 5 or so minutes to go, and, all of a sudden HC takes off. They hit three threes and four shots at the rim while forcing Siena (for the most part) to settle for long threes. What makes this special is that they are reserving their best basketball when it counts with only six guys playing serious minutes. Carmody must have these guys in great shape. PS. Siena's big guy looks like Bill Laimbeer. One of the big changes during the run was that HC held Sienna to one shot per possession. Sienna did a good job of simply side stepping when HC defenders came flying after being slow on a rotation, leaving Sienna all the time in the world to get their shot off

$2 tix was a good idea. Should do this during all winter break games.

Glad to hear I got some screen time.
Not a lot to add but two points
1 - Said to NAD immediately after the game, we miss Niego. His 12-13 minutes a game give Floyd and Faw some much needed time to refocus and his ability to hit (& at least take) a shot from three or just inside the arc provides a change of pace from JF - something other teams need to practice and be ready for. Part of the sloppiness we may be seeing the last 2 games may be the team adjusting to not having Connor.
2 - kudos to the HC92 kids. They always bring great energy, but today they were leading. First half, foul called on Siena. They beat NAD and started the You! You! You! Taunt. Late in the second half the De-fense chant was getting a bit stale every trip down the court and they changed it up to, I think, Good De-Fense! Good De-Fense! Those in the vicinity joined and soon much of the crowd seemed to morph it into Go De-fence! For the remainder of the game. The change definitely brought a little more involvement from the crowd and possibly energy to the team on the defensive end. Well Done HC92 clan!

And, thanks 8485, for "donating" your "cushy" chairbacks for my grandkids. I don't want to give you a lot of thanks because I know you actually like to "slum" it down in section I with the usual suspects. My granddaughter seemed very impressed with the '92 cheerleaders. For awhile, my 3 year old grandson was rooting for Siena because green is one of his favorite colors. Had the Crusaders been wearing road purple, they would have gotten his support. Final note: the $2 tickets really do seem to work and just reinforces my belief and earlier posts that if HC could lower the gameday prices, especially in football, they will get a much greater local crowd and probably make up much of the revenue loss on concessions.

From where we have been the past many years, an 8-4 record to begin the season with a very young team is a pretty strong start. The last two games are games that in the past few years we would have experienced a different outcome. Will see how the Iona game goes as we conclude our out of conference schedule. But 20 plus wins is certainly within reach this year.
So sloppiness, while not desired, will continue to be the part of the growth process for the team. As they mature and develop, both individually and as a team, they will understand what it takes to win, the mistakes will be reduced and the flow and consistency of play will be at a higher level.
As fans and believers in the athletic programs, we look for perfection or at least something approaching it when it comes to execution and results. On the best of days we get 2+* recruits filling the roster (average) in our athletic program and some are developed by coaches to be 4* by time they graduate. This sophomore class is talented and it will require patience as they compete against some who are more talented and athletic. Remember despite the incredible development by Floyd, there hasn’t been significant senior leadership on the floor during the last two seasons. With the freshmen and this recruiting class we are beginning to reload and build depth for the future.
Merry Christmas to all and looking forward to a very positive second half of the season!

I had a 2 hour bus ride on the Siena bus to think about what transpired this afternoon. It would have been a hell of a lot longer for me if Siena had hung on for the win. First time I saw the new, improved physical plant, very, very impressive. My friends from Siena were in awe. This was the second time I have seen the team in person. The first time was here in Albany against UAlbany. In that one, we were ahead by 15 and just squeaked out a W in overtime. Siena took all those 3s because, other than off of offensive rebounds, they could not penetrate. If we had a flaw offensively,it was our small guards penetrating too much ending up among the redwoods with no good percentage shot. Probably at least 7 of Siena’s 3 point shots were chucked up to beat the shot clock in the face of tight defense. Also, at least 2 of Siena’s made 3s were “Happy Birthday “ makes, including one off the glass. On defense the obvious shortcoming was the failure to get defensive rebounds although some of Siena’s rebounds and put backs were “over the back”. The officiating was lousy but didn’t affect the outcome. The boys didn’t quit and that’s my take away.

I was a season ticket holder for over 25 years, but I gave them up about 10 years ago. I then went to select games for 5 years and then stopped going. This is the first game I attended in 5 years, so it is also the first game I attended in the improved facility. I do like it better than the original facility. When I was returning home from the game today I noticed there was a big back up on 290 getting onto the Mass Pike. I hope you got through that mess in a reasonable amount of time.

Was a great game to go to and the crowd definitely did a job on the Siena player Pickett.
Siena did a good job bringing fans, but they traveled home with an L. Not just one but to L's this year vs HC
Was nervous when we were down, but Butler hit some key three pointers and the back cut offense allowed some layups late which was good to see.
Siena like the previous opponent went cold late in the game but they still managed to hit nine threes to our seven.
8-4 is the record and I can't complain. A win is a win and lets be honest both Siena and the previous opponent are a lot better than people think. Besides we are playing real division 1 teams not division 3 teams.

2 dollar tickets obviously a good idea. Too bad the concession stand is a joke. Could have offset losses. Truly shocking what a disaster it was Thursday and today. A total embarrassment.

I ask innocently Is the concession stand something the alumni funders can take over if we agree to match the proceeds for the season?

Having gone to a lot of games over the last five years, I was pretty confident we would pull it out despite not playing well for long stretches so I stuck around after making a similar drive. Hope we play perfectly for your next game in the 2023-24 season.

Let's hear more about upgrading the concession stand offerings. In my years as a season ticket holder, I loved getting a hot coffee at halftime. They must have timed the brewing for the ht rush, it was always fresh and hot and a good pick-me-up for the second half. However, I could not find a good food item for my adult palate so I would either get those whole grain chips from the vending machine or chilli from the chilli guy in the years he was there.
Unlike many colleges, HC owns their own food service and offer many great fresh food choices in Kimball. After the recent Bob Cousy talk in the theater, my companion and I went upstairs and paid for dinner as guests at Kimball. The food choices were impressive and one of the Staff explained that because the dining service is owned, not contracted, they are very responsive to adjust their offerings based on suggestions.
One apples to apples comparison would be the great pizza in Kimball compared to the pizza as I remember it at the Hart Concession stand. The difference is night and day.

The concession stand operation @ The Hart is now run by the local Papa Gino’s franchise instead of Holy Cross Dining, AKA Ma Kimball. This change was recently made. I believe Thursday’s game was their first. They did not seem to have their act together in either the Canisius or Siena games. On Thursday they did not have Hot Dogs, today they were not open when I arrived at 11:15.
Obviously vast room for improvement by Papa Gino’s.

Seems like something that should be pretty easy but they have made it look very hard for the last two games. 2.5 weeks to figure it out before the next home game.

The game was ongoing, the crowd was low but nevertheless there was a long, slow line. Understaffed?

Pregame the hot dogdywere not ready and there were more people ahead of me than uncooked dogs on the grill. I just figured that I would get one at half time. Went down immediately at the horn to beat the crowd only to find the stand closing as they had no more product to sell. Not a good experience. However, rather lose at the concession stand than on the scoreboard. If that is the only concession stand, and I could find no other, it is totally inadequate.

Best quote
″(In the first half) we were trying to do too much,” Carmody said. “We’ve got this guy in the middle, throw it down to him, cut. He’s a very willing passer. Why are we trying to do all this tricky stuff? Let’s be very straightforward about it. It was pretty effective. We started throwing the ball down. Guys started cutting and passing and it looked pretty. It was nice.”
