1968 (my grad year) Bill Toomey won the Olympic decathlon - Worcester Academy grad. Don't know if he made the Wheaties box. Well documented association between decathlon and horse racing. 50+ years later, Toomey still holds the record for the fastest 400 Meters in the Olympic Decathlon My high school in the 1960's had a great multi-sport star named Jeff Bannister who won the USA Decathlon Olympic Trials. He went to the Olympics but I think he got hurt as he did not medal. He was a basketball star at UNH. I recall the Rev Bob Richards doing the Wheaties TV commercials for years well after the end of his athletic career

Thought I'd add this link to the discussion of which Olympians were on the Wheaties box. I, again incorrectly, thought Bob Richards was first but, nope, and a female! And, as far as decathletes on the box, how can we forget perhaps the most famous transgender person today, Caitlyn (Bruce) Jenner? qz.com/2036952/every-olympic-athlete-thats-been-on-the-wheaties-box/

Pretty embarrassing for you guys to have all this talk of decathletes and Wheaties boxes with no mention of the greatest athlete/product pairing of all time:

To me the Olympics will always be Track and Field. Great Shot Put competition last night.
But in a sport where competitors like throwers and jumpers thrive off of the crowd the empty stadium has to be tough.

If you were going to use lesser folks, wouldn't you at least make sure they did the handoffs correctly? The last runner didn't have a great finishing kick, regardless. The Canadian sure did.

One solution would be to select/identify the participants (plus an alternate) for 4 x 100M at the trials and include training sessions with those specific athletes. (Of course that doesn’t solve all the problems and creates additional problems but it would improve the handoffs).
(Not a concern 4 x 400 and I like the idea of our male and female spectacular 400 hurdlers being included.)

Just watched the video of Katie Nageotte winning the pole vault Gold for USA. The video has great side views and slo-mo replays that show how the vaulters clear the bar-really interesting to me to see the technique required in addition to the great athleticism.

While watching the Olympics, I now appreciate the skill to play a mostly forgotten recreational sport relegated to basements and rumpus rooms.... Table Tennis.
Holy Cross and the Patriot League should sponsor Table Tennis, initially as a club sport with eventual elevation to a varsity sport. Since the Ivy and the NESCAC has Squash as their niche sport for attracting international students, Table Tennis is a sport that has a following from around the world, whose costs regarding facilities and equipment would not be of financially high cost.
For some reason, I keep thinking of the scenes from Forrest Gump every time I see a match.
Time for the PL to find corporate sponsors willing to join in the venture.

The technique aspect of track and field....even the runners....is highly under-rated.
It's amazing.

Is the pool of available table tennis athletes similar to the era of Ping Pong Diplomacy; i.e., the league's collective recruiting budgets have to allow for trips to Asia?

Bob Richards was the first on the FRONT of the box though, so you were partially right about him.

I have had no problem with their egos; they are a great team with a stirling record. Overall, the Americans have had a great Olympics with 91 medals, so far. Winning any kind of medal is an accomplishment in my book.

Yes, coming in ranked number 1 in the world and finishing 3rd is certainly very disappointing. The second guessing regarding roster selection, strategy, and focus is already at full throttle and the team filled with older stars is surely due for a thorough makeover.

Politics aside, it's a classic case, to paraphrase Branch Rickey; of trading players a year too late rather than a year too soon. Happens a lot, especially when the players are popular. What's different, perhaps, is unlike most of the US pro team sports, salaries don't really affect roster decisions.

The year too late because the Olympics are being held in 2021 instead of 2020.
The roster was more or less set in late 2019 / early 2020 and adjustments to the roster more or less did not take place due to limited practices for the team until after they were vaxxed. By the Spring of 2021, it was too late to have major changes to the roster. I enjoyed watching the team leading up to and in the Olympics, with the exception to the game lost to Canada.
As always, disappointed when any of our teams do not capture the gold.

With soccer, it is not uncommon for the top ranked team not to win tournaments. In the recently completed Euro Championships, Belgium, ranked #1 in the world, lost in the quarterfinals. The US lost to Canada but it was "against the run of play". Canada won on a penalty kick on the flukiest of penalties. Happens all the time in soccer. You guys are just bending over backwards looking for reasons not to like this team. I wonder why? P.S. In 2016, the US, #1 ranked in the world, lost in the quarters to Sweden (pks). Sweden ended up with silver while Canada won bronze. These are the two team that defeated the U.S this year, hardly weak teams. So the US actually improved upon their performance from the prior Olympics!

U.S. women's soccer team fails to reach gold medal game for 2nd straight Olympics The U.S. women's national soccer team boasts back-to-back World Cup champion status, has ranked first or second in the world every year since 2003 and until its Olympic opener against Sweden, had not lost a game in 44 matches.
The big picture: But after a disappointing performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where the women failed to reach the gold medal game for the first time in history, the team was looking for redemption on the Olympic stage in Tokyo. Their hopes were dashed on Monday, however, when they lost to Canada in the semifinals.www.google.com/amp/s/news.yahoo.com/amphtml/u-womens-olympic-soccer-team-200123237.html
