Players are temporarily "drunk" with freedom. That will calm down as the portal track record gets established as an efficient tool when warranted but usually just trading spaces.

Here’s an opinion: Players are, in general, unrealistic about their chances in these situations. If you say, for example, that 35% of D1 scholarship players who enter the portal do not get any offers from other schools and lose the schollie they had, 90% of them would say “that wont happen to me-that applies to other players, not to me.” It’s the same mentality that explains why some college players who average 8 minutes and 1.7 points per game on 42% shooting decide to declare for the NBA draft.

Having had my first real exposure to AAU basketball this year, I can assure you that just about every kid is unrealistic about his or her basketball ability. I don’t suspect that changes a lot when they get to college.

Not only are most of the kids unrealistic about their abilities, the parents are too. I’ve seen in both basketball and football when my Kids were involved in sports.
Inflated egos, that burst, when a D1 offer is not in the pipeline. For those that happen to receive an offer, many believe they will be the next Steph, or LeBron, or Larry. Until the first day of practice, and the level of competition is elevated. Then they head for the portal and find no one wants them now. They were last year’s news, now only good for fish wrap.

Isn't another factor that the family goal is the scholarship & once attained the motivation to put in the athletic development effort does not match the coach's expectations.

Many students have always been unrealistic about their abilities. It seems adults have lost the ability to provide wise guidance to young people. Where are the parents? The Coaches? Faculty & various adult counselors? Do they try to talk sense to these youngsters? Is this another example of money corrupting values?

It has been that way for some time. I had one student who was battling depression because his dad insisted he play football for Notre Dame so he could have a pro career in the NFL. He did not believe he was good enough and felt as if he were disappointing his dad. It almost made him suicidal. I knew he was a good athlete and student, but also knew he was NOT an NFL level player. He went on to attend an ivy league college where he started at QB for three years And was never drafted by the NFL. He also learned to be kind to himself (and still love his dad). Parents can be a problem, but I am not sure it is as new a problem as some think. There are just more way for "helicopter parents" to meddle in their children's lives.

No one has to worry about my kids having an inflated sense of their athletic ability or whether they’re going to make a living playing sports. Except my daughter. She’s going to play at UConn and then in the WNBA.

Ryan Wade's path is interesting and perhaps would be different five years from now. As a sophomore he averaged 5.9 points per game playing in every game and would be a fourth year senior and logically a co-captain this coming season if he had remained.
No judgement whatsoever of Mr. Wade, but he didn't have five years of track record of the portal to assist him in making his decision and future players in a similar situation will have the accumulated portal results to consider.

So will the coaching staffs....in a lot of instances they are complicit in some of these moves. Developing a roster versus turning it over always works better.

I’d caution any young lady he might propose to as he seems to have an aversion to commitment.

Everybody (at least Luc and Lowder) grows an inch after leaving HC. Can we get our money back for that Elongator?

Lowder missed playing at EMU with up-to-now-legendary-flop Emoni Bates.

Justin Vander Baan (BC 7' center and cousin of Alex) entered the portal on March 25, 2022. Hearing from a reliable source that he will be coming to the Hart Center this coming season, but just not as a member of the Crusader basketball team... likely to be a Bison, Mountain Hawk or Leopard.... stay tuned!

Fits the general description of some Leopard players from the past....however, with FOH gone, you'd think that would have changed.
