Basing it on wins scares me. Don’t want to see schedule dumbed down (any more). Didn’t “20 wins baby!” get MB an extension? In 2013-14, HC went 20-14. Our non-conference SoS that year was 145, in the top 40% of D1. The dumbing down of the non-con schedule started with Carmody.
NCSOS under MB 2010-11. 167 2011-12. 194 2012-13. 231 2013-14. 145 2014-15. 103
Average: 168
Carmody Average: 239 Nelson Average: 253

Guarantee games are almost always home games for the Power 6 opponent. The lower conference team is guaranteed a certain sum of money, such as Creighton have to HC this season. Lower conference teams do not buy guarantee games. I think A10 schools (like UMass ) also do guarantee games, but less money than a power conference. Probably get a two foot one with the one being at a neutral court. Better for Worcester but worse for the budget because not only don't you get paid for the road game, you need to rent the Centrum for a fairly small gate

Again, I'm lazy, but my guess is back then the PL was a little stronger top to bottom than it is now. During that period they had wins over BC, Harvard, at USF and at Old Dominion (not great teams outside of Harvard, but still teams from higher rated conferences. I'd take that in a heartbeat now).

Matt Langel’s coaching record at Colgate: First six years: 71-117 (.378) overall 42-58 (.420) PL regular season 2-6 (.250) PL tournament 6 straight losing seasons 3 20 loss seasons 0 PL regular season or tournament titles Hard to believe that Colgate kept him around after the first 6 years and hard to believe the 180 degree change in performance and record in the last 6 years. Quite frankly, I’m not sure which is the more amazing. A few things that are worth noting -- In the 13 years Emmett Davis was head coach at Colgate, their average end-of-season Pomeroy ranking was 260. In Langel's third season, they finished ranked 184. Davis only cracked the top 200 one time in his career at Colgate. Langel's first three seasons had the following end-of-season rankings: 324, 269, 184. While the wins may not have gotten there just yet, I think most could see Langel had them going in the right direction. They had the best offense in the PL in his third season and the foundation of the program was effectively being built through transfers (Burnatowski, Tillotson, Jacobs). If there was ever a time to pull the plug on Langel, it would have been after the 2016-17 season -- his sixth at Colgate -- where they went 10-22. Given Colgate had allowed Emmett Davis to operate for 13 seasons which ranged from very bad to below average, the leash was going to be long for Langel, assuming he showed progress each season. To bring this full circle to Nelson -- we are currently ranked 332nd in his fourth season and will almost assuredly finish as a bottom 50 team yet again under Nelson.

Despite losing the majority of his staff, Langel continues to roll. True testament to his ability to coach up his teams. One has to think an A-10 gig has to come calling soon.

There were two logical openings for Langel were recently vacant (St. Joe's and Temple), but those schools decided to make poor hires (Lange and McKie)

Aaron McKie, a star alum, looks pretty good today.

PC win RW's first year was kind of a fluke. Team struggled after that game. Remember something in the Feinstein book about RW saying to Tim Welsh "I don't think we played that well", which subsequent games seemed to bear out.
And IIRC, PC didn't end up with that bad of a team to boot.
Probably fits in the Williams game category; only we were on the right end of it.

Gotta imagine Langel gets a long look there. Lange has been so underwhelming.

Was at the game and was my first game to watch HC upon moving to RI. If Ralph said he didn’t think we played well, that’s because his standards were higher than what we’ve seen from any of his successors. We DID play well but we’re also helped because PC took us too lightly. Was also at the game the following year and that’s the game we didn’t play well in and could and should have won. As I posted at the time, late in the game we were down by perhaps 3-4 points, maybe 5 with 2-3 minutes to go and our point guard who shall remain nameless lackadaisically brought the ball up under no press from the Friars as if we were sitting on a lead. PC was more than content to see us run time off the clock. I was rather upset.🤬😤🤪😜

Where would HC get the money to buy a top 50-100 OOC schedule? When Holy Cross schedules weak opponents our board screams bloody murder. So wouldn't top 50-100 ADs and Head Coaches suffer the same blow back if they scheduled a team at HC's level that acts as a dead weight on their SOS, and that's if they win. Take the abuse dished out when HC loses to a D-3 and multiply it for the larger following of a top 50-100 program if HC were to win. I can see Holy Cross increasing their OOC strength of schedule incrementally if our own performance improves but to average top 50-100 would require buying multiple expensive guarantee games I would think. They would be buy in games- approximately 5 of the 13 games-just an opinion to speed up development of the roster and improved performance When you say "buy in" Do you mean HC paying five higher rated schools to entice them to play us? Or are you thinking HC can get five higher ranked schools to pay us a guarantee to play them?

We can be they buy game for a top program- Creighton, Maryland, Gonzaga, Ohio State, Texas, etc.
A loss for us, but it gives the team a chance to play better schools, learn along the way, and attract better talent- and get paid for playing the game.

Last I checked it takes both schools to agree to play, and playing one of the worst squads in the country from the invisible pL doesn't do much for most name schools.

He was one of two finalists a few years ago for the Saint Joseph’s job and they inexplicably hired Billy Lange instead. That was a blunder on their part that has set their program back significantly.

No match for HC's four blunders in a row. HC hired two head coaches with .000 winning percentage as head coach who went on to .290(SK) at HC and .240(BN) at HC and one (MB) who was .447 at his most recent stop and went on to .454 at HC and another (BC) who was .478 at his most recent stop and went on to .443 at HC. No more search firms please. I think Kit should build this competency in-house.

Search firms……
Did we use a search firm to land Bob Chesney?

Rest assured that the search firm used to bring Hughes to HC will be the one that's used to hire a new MBB coach when it happens b/c that's how it works: the firm helped him, so he owes them a kick-back.

IIRC, LaSalle was interested in Langel last year when they were searching for a new coach. Don’t remember what happened, but I think he either declined to interview for the job or he publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Colgate and LaSalle took the hint and stopped pursuing him.

The search firm that brought us ADKH is the same one that brought us FADMB and the one that had a hand in bringing us HCBN. Needless to say, don’t think we want them involved in the selection process for the next head MBB coach, whenever that occurs. ACTP’s concern, based on past decisions at HC and elsewhere, is warranted. It will be interesting to see what the BOT and ADKH will do but the hiring of a search firm, particularly the one we’ve used in the recent past, will (as the board cliche goes) tell us everything we need to know about those making the decisions on Mt. St. James.

We have a new president and new Board chair.
While it certainly is a strong possibility they might use the same search firm, with the new leadership, they may question both the cost and results of using that firm and may decide to either use a different search firm or, if they believe Kit has the knowledge based on being both local but experience in other parts of the country at his previous positions, might just try to save any expense of a search firm at all.
Then again, maybe there won’t be an opening as the basketball program makes a great and historic turnaround. 🤷🏻♂️

I do find it at least a bit premature to debate the process for filling an opening that does not, as yet, exist.
