Wow, JEB thought Georgetown's accepting Patrick Ewing was the perfect metaphor for the dirty, nasty, take anybody world of college sports. So he turned up his nose and let us into obscurity. Patrick Ewing graduated from Georgetown(albeit, with "help") never put his life up his nose, now has a very responsible NBA assistant coaching job, and is interviewing to be the head coach for his alma mater in a Power 5 conference.
Some might have called Ewing's going to Georgetown outreach, celebrating diversity, a win-win for a college and a young man. For Father Brooks, it was the last straw. For all of you who hate my posts on this subject (and I think you hate them mostly because the truth in them is so painful for us all when we now look up to Bucknell and Lehigh) I direct you to read/reread The Last Amateurs."

interesting that all his experience is as a pro assistant He retired as a player in 2002; that same year, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Washington Wizards, and he's been an NBA assistant coach ever since for several teams. Not sure how he'd get experience in college if no one offered him a job.

interesting that all his experience is as a pro assistant Georgetown went the same route as St John's (2015) in an attempt to recapture past glory. It is however risky to hire people with no college coaching experience regardless of whether they are former college and NBA stars. If GU follows a similar path to SJU, it may take a few years to get back on track. St John's has gone 8-24 and 14-19 in Mullin's first two seasons. He has recruited well and they are expected to improve. Mullin however had to both rebuild the program and learn to be a head college coach at the same time. The Hoyas may be looking at a comparable prospect.

Do you think HC will now get a chance at playing GU ? Or will Thompson's shadow be over Ewing......

The Hoyas may be looking at a comparable prospect. Big difference. Mullin had no bench experience at any level when St. John's hired him. He'd been doing TV, and other than some front office work with the Sacramento Kings, he hadn't really been involved with a team since he retired as a player. Ewing's been learning the coaching craft for the last 15 years as an assistant. I don't doubt that Georgetown is looking to win the press conference by bringing back its greatest player, but Ewing's more than qualified for the job. The question for him, as it is for all college coaches, is how well he recruits. Nothing else matters.

biggest problem for Mullin has been Xs and Os i think Ewing would be well advised to hire at least one assistant who has taught offense and defense

I don't think Ewing will have any problem recruiting bigs. And that's a major part of the game (See Kennedy Meeks).

The persona of JT pere still looms large at GU.
Ewing seems to have been the default candidate, after little/no interest shown by other names in the supposed mix.

ACTP- I didn't mean his biological roots. His athletic formative yrs were in Cambridge. Did you ever study the difference between literal and figurative in your English classes at HC?

I'm not sure if I should admit this here, but I am a Big East fan so I hope this works out. Ewing has been trying so long to be a head coach, it will be interesting to see how he does.
Fun fact, apparently BU was a finalist for Ewing out of high school. Other schools in the mix included UNC, BC, UCLA, and Villanova. Once Ewing picked G-Town, then BU coach Rick Pitino said Ewing wouldn't have been accepted at BU. Could be true or could be sour grapes.

Seriously? I'd wager that at least 90% of the posters on this board have read that book in the, what, dozen years it's been available. But thanks for the recommendation. And I'll decide for myself how and why I hate your posts. You don't get to decide that for me. Thanks in advance.
