skerry would obviously be a great get, and major props to hughes if he could pull it off, but why would skerry want to face another complete rebuild in a worse program in a worse conference for less money (or at best, marginally more) when he is a rising star? are we going to suffer through ___ years of "we should have hired skerry!" again when we hire someone who was actually a realistic choice? Playing devil’s advocate here, if Langel moves on from Colgate, doesn’t Skerry have a much clearer path to multiple NCAA bids at HC (in an awful pL) than Towson (in a deep, but single bud CAA)? The top of the pL is wiiiiide open if Colgate doesn’t have Langel. fair point. but would it be enough? just seems like a tough sell unless he really wants to return to massachusetts.

As I spend other people’s money, I would suggest that in addition to paying off the former guy, if HC want to hire an already experienced D1 coach, we need to pay the next guy at least $450,000 and be the top paying job among the non service academy PL schools. I would think we could get a D3 guy for less.
It will still be less than whatever VR gets paid. Since the IRS can’t seem to get 990s processed for public viewing for the past few years, it’s hard to know what that number is.

The CAA is a better league compared to the PL. The only reason that Skerry would be interested is that he would love to come back to New England. That would seem like a pretty big reason. He also seems to value education and as Ches says, "You can have it all at Holy Cross."

Landry Kosmalski - Head Coach at Swarthmore
Since he has been mentioned as someone HC should talk to, I found this on You Tube - gives insights into his coaching style.
From what we have read here certainly seems to be a contrast to BN"s style.
Here is the bullet points of his accomplishments at Swarthmore:
HIGHLIGHTS
NABC National Coach of the Year 2019-20
153-74 record at Swarthmore; .674 win percentage
Region/District Coach of the Year: 2017, 2019, 2020
Centennial Conference Coach of the Year: 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20
Centennial Conference Champions: 2016-17, 2018-19
Was a great player at Davidson and may be able to help develop the Center position at HC - something desparatley needed at HC

Based on BBC’s list, let it be known he wouldn’t have even looked at Bob Chesney. 1) Wrong B) I allowed the CCC to nominate two names. Gotta whittle the endless list down to two.
3) D1 basketball is very different than 1-AA football, but you already knew that. Makes zero sense--why would you limit the search to 2 proven D3 head coaches, yet have a long list of D-1 assistants, the approach that brought us Sean Kearney and Brett Nelson? I love the 1-B-3 construct

ESPN’s Coaching Carousel has a notation regarding the HC job. “Don’t be surprised to see Holy Cross garner interest from bigger names than expected for its head coach opening. The Crusaders can offer a strong salary and sources have indicated Vermont’s John Becker and Towson’s Pat Skerry are among the candidates they could pursue.” Not sure I believe this, but I was banging the drum for Skerry after Milan was let go, and he'd definitely be on my short list, too. From Medfid, went to Tufts, high academic experience as an assistant at Tufts and William&Mary. Great recruiter in the fertile soils of New England prep basketball. We'd be getting kids from NMH again, imho.
I'd expect Becker to show more interest

I happened to run into a former HC basketball player from back in the '70s at a wedding reception at about the time Nelson was hired. He expressed concern about hiring an assistant coach as head coach, even from a bigger program like Marquette. He said there's a world of difference between being an assistant and sitting in the first chair, especially when you're coming in cold from another school. Nelson's abysmal track record would say there may be something to that point of view. Just a thought.

I think Kit can make a pretty good business case why an increase in salary to get a guy like Skerry could work. Doesn’t take much creativity. For the same reason, I don’t think we should be throwing $350k as our salary and thinking “we’ll get good candidates”. That’s what we have done since Willard left, and it’s failed miserably. I get D2/D3 is trying something new, but it’s really just doing the opposite of our previous coaching hire fails. Just like we did with Brown, Carmody, Nelson.
My pitch would be pretty simple: If you blend all of the buyouts, paying multiple coaches for the same year, etc. quick math shows we have spent an average of ~$500k per year on salaries alone. What do we have to show for it? $0 in donations to the basketball program and 800 fans per game. If you can get a guy like Skerry for $500k, with a much higher chance of success (you can bake probability of success into the business case, btw) you can sell more tickets, get more donations, play more guarantee games, etc.
With where we’re at as a program, you have to do something like this to break the cycle.

A thought... Certainly at present, HC basketball is a bottom feeder in a bottom feeding league. However, would success at HC garner more attention than success at Towson? Is HC a better stepping stone for a coach trying to move up? We have been buffeted by years of failure. Maybe we have become blind to the opportunities HC b-ball offers. Don't sell HC b-ball short. Look at things not only as they are but as they could be at HC. Potential!

When we moved into our neighborhood, there was a pink house around the corner that I considered ugly. I thought the exact same house looked very good after it was painted brown. Someone, maybe the owner, looked at it and envisioned it with a different color. Would that HC could transform its men hoops program as easily as that example.

They have to come up with some sort of "transformation plan", not just wing it with a new coach. Just not sure they know what that plan is right now.

I love the 1-B-3 construct Given that the CCC has spent countless hours scouting D2/D3, I was just thinking you all could save Kit some bandwidth and present him with your best two None of the guys on my list have a resume like Kearney (a million years in one place for a non-X’s & O’s head coach). Nelson also fits into the latter bucket there. The “D1 Assistant Approach” also brought Colgate Matt Langel. For every one example of someone who failed/succeeded, there’s another who was the opposite.

The vid by Coach Kosmalski is very instructive. Apparently, BN was the rigid grind it out type of coach. Satisfaction derived from successfully completing a task. This was my experience as a student in elementary school & at HC. Kosmalski offers a different vision of coaching/teaching. One based on positive reinforcement , stressing relationships and joy in accomplishing a goal. Happiness sells. This was my experience as a student in HS & grad school. I've seen some stern, task oriented teachers succeed and others fail. Saw some positive group oriented teachers fail. They looked like smiling jerks. But, I have seen many positive oriented teachers achieve great success. Depends on the leader & those being led. [An admission] I used positive reinforcement in my brief career in management and my lifetime calling as a master teacher with great success in both areas.

It seems to me if you can create an environment where the kids on the team feel connected in a positive way and accountable to each other you will have fewer kids jumping into the portal. As we all know players generally feel that they are in it together - these guys become friends and if the discussion among them is - 'Look, we need you to stick around to build this thing so we can win" is pretty powerful. I suspect the last few years the discussion among the players has been - "Get out why you can". A coach today has to help build that "were it in it together" culture - along with strong leadership from select team members.

Gotta wonder if the Anthony Lamb issue might harm Becker’s non-UVM employment prospects. He is a very good recruiter who casts a wide net and that is paramount for HC’s future success.

Becker took over an excellent program and has maintained its excellence. Skerry took over a toxic waste dump and turned it into a solid program - and quickly.
Advantage, Skerry.

No decent sitting D1 coach is coming to HC in the atrocious pL unless HC is willing to throw a sh*t load of $ around.
