Totally agree. When MA (who was cold as ice) took that corner jumper with 7 secs on the game clock I was totally shocked. As he let it go, I shouted "What is he doing???" It cost us the go ahead basket by BU before the half. I'd love to know what Carmody said to him at half. Physical mistakes I can tolerate. Dumb plays like that I find really tough to swallow. I saw a slightly different version. Yes the timing of the shot was not great, but it looked to me that MA was determined to end the half with a made 3, he had the ball, was wide open and I thought he finally had made one...Too bad! Lou, I see your point, but shooting when he did would still have given BU time to come down and score.

although that was a bad decision by Mal,. we still took the lead in the second half before imploding we will never know what was the actual turning point, but in a close game, it rarely occurs in the first half how about 2 fg in the last 11 minutes ? Was amazed by our inability to hit even bunnies in that stretch, but would 11 minutes really be a considered a "point."?

Husek was lights out, then couldn't buy one, same for RC, and Malachi couldn't get a good shot off Our other two guys are not a threat. Nice D by BU...Maybe Coach Jones isn't as bad as some here think

jones is ok. the zone only worked because as packed in as it was, we needed to shoot twos and threes better than we did.

I completely disagree with our problem being that we just need to "shoot better." Taking 58% of our shots from 3 with this personnel is a losing strategy.

hoops, I be misreading what you wrote. Are you saying we are making 44[%] of our 2s?
From what I see on the season-to-date stats, we are 181 of 367 2-pointers which I calculate at .493 or 49% made. If my numbers are right, do you still have the same opinion?

Here's what KenPom has to say for Holy Cross
2 Point Pctg= .493 = #152 in Division-1
3 Point Pctg= .351= # 162
Effective FG Pctg= .509= #146
3 Point attempts as a % of total FG attempts= 46.7% = #13 in D-1

I'm really confused then.
We took 689 shots, 322 of them 3s (46.7%) and 367 of them 2s (53.3%).

Couple that with being 327 of 351 on 2FG defense (a slight step back from 319 last year), and you are never going to be a consistently good basketball team.

With the defense we play, we are going to give up easy baskets down low. The tradeoff is that we are going to generate a lot of steals and deflections. We are currently 3rd in the nation in terms of steals per possession. I don't think that's because we are crazy-athletic as a team. As for shooting too many threes, I don't really mind the threes as long as Malachi (39%), Husek (48%), Champion (35%) and Charles (38%) are the ones taking most of them. 33.3% from 3 is as good as 50% from 2 except that, as hoops points out, you don't get to the line shooting threes. However, you do get some long offensive rebounds, which I'd like to see us do a better job of acquiring. I do think we passed up some very makeable twos last night, which we need to take and make. The ones we did take, we did not generally convert.

It seems somewhat of an oxymoron that a team which plays the PO (famous for the backdoor cut leading to easy baskets) should be 13th in the nation in terms of % of 3s taken. I don't think that what I saw last night was the PO. I recognize that the PO is more easily run against a M2M but you must have some sort of alternative game plan against a zone. Sadly, last night it didn't seem like we had a viable game plan against the zone BU threw up. My take was that we simply moved the ball around the perimeter without getting any great looks and then essentially let one fly to avoid the shot clock. I don't believe I saw many in and out ball motions which are needed against the zone. The point guard must penetrate and dish out to the sides or corners. Early in the first half BU ran that set very well but couldn't put the ball in the basket. I would prefer the penetrating and dish style offense rather that trying to pass the ball around the perimeter in the hopes that the ball is faster than the defender.
One of the things that playing zone defense does is to make it more difficult to box out and thus creates the opportunity for the offense to have second chance points. That didn't happen for HC last night but sure did for BU. Against a significantly more athletic team there has to be an acute awareness of getting back after a shot goes up but I didn't think that BU was significantly more athletic than us. I'm not suggesting that everybody crash the offensive boards but certainly the bigs should be doing that.
As for the statistics, if you are 13th in the nation in % of 3s taken if you could move up from 162 to 75th in terms of % made, you'd probably be a top 30 team, certainly a top 50 team. However, recall the adage "live by the 3, die by the 3".
However, it is a hell of a lot easier to make suggestions from the armchair than it is to implement them on the floor, something some of us seem to forget.
As to recruiting, this is CBC's second year at the Cross and this year's freshmen class is really his first recruited class. Let us be patient as good things may come.

That was my impression too and think we did have 1 or 2 clock shot violations. Was starting to wonder if our coaching staff has called MB in for consultations. While I am aware that CWC has basically given orders everyone back when a shot is taken to avoid an opposition fast break, I have observed that PB tends to loiter and occasionally gets an offensive rebound and if he doesn't, then heads back at full speed and invariably gets back in time to defend. Not sure why we don't at least have 2 crash the offensive boards and send 3 back. Hopefully would still prevent most fast breaks and perhaps pick up a few more o boards. But, as previously posted, easy for me to say.

But, as previously posted, easy for me to say. In the 8 seasons where KenPom data exists while RW was at HC (2002-09), the average OReb ranking was 51, and there was only one year (2006) in which we ranked below #80. Was there ever an issue of teams killing us in transition because we attacked the offensive boards? We play in the Patriot League -- teams are not looking to turn defensive rebounds into layups.

BTW, I am sure I am not the only one to notice that the loss at BU had two detrimental results:
1. We continue the PL regular season consecutive away game losses 2. We lost the chance to get back to a .500 record.

BU 17 Turnovers HC 7 Turnovers. We should win those games every time if we shoot a little better and get a rebound every once in a while. Friday's game was a missed opportunity..... Good bad....
