I do get jealous of that sunny El Paso weather when I watch the Sun Bowl it on TV. It'll be VERY sunny and mid fifties there at gametime (Noon mountain time). Some years it is a tad warmer. Looks like a cool spot for a game on tv. Can’t say I ever recall watching the Sun Bowl. ND dominant in all phases today in what is essentially an extra spring game for both squads.

Nice stadium wedged into the beautiful Franklin Mountain desert landscape. Sunset at that stadium has to be seen to be believed. Lots of backups and underclassmen playing. Of course, the QB situation is interesting as Notre Dame's incoming guy (Duke's Reilly Leonard) and presumed starter isn't on the team yet. He'll be there for spring ball. Notre Dame went with Sam Hartman's backup. And Oregon State's first and second string QBs are in the portal so they had to go with their 3rd stringer. But still a nice win for ND and a 10 win season sounds good.

The ND quarterback is a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School and looked good in there. He may well have a shot at the starting role next season.

He showed that this year (he threw 4 TDs). At the same time there are about a million reasons to suspect Leonard will be the starter (beyond the fact he wouldn’t head to ND without certain assurances ).

Definitely a nice game for Angeli but Riley Leonard is opening the season at Texas A&M next year as the ND starter barring injury. And they have a stud QB recruit coming in as a Frosh next year (CJ Carr who is already on campus and practicing with the team). Will be interesting to see if Angeli sticks it out at ND with some likelihood he’ll be a backup for the next 3 years.

I do hope his talent will not be wasted in that way.

CJ Carr from Saline (MI) HS and grandson of Lloyd Carr, coach of Michigan’s 1997 national championship team. Came as a surprise to many that he opted for ND over Michigan in view of the family background. Outshone in the Michigan Division 1 HS playoffs the last two years by Bryce Underwood, the 5-star QB from Belleville HS, two time state champions.

Watching Ohio State-Missouri and The Ohio State University can't do anything on offense, mainly just running plays because their starting QB is not playing and is transferring to Syracuse. Anyone know the reason he is leaving TOSU? I don't get it; he led them to victory over ND!

Watching OS get the first first down after 3rd down well in 3rd Q is ridiculous.

They really should exclude bowl games from season eligibility at this point. At least let the red shirt kids play with no penalty with how many kids are opting out

Not sure what the answer is. Don’t think the 12 team playoff is going to help because all eyes will be on that beginning 12/20 and 12/21 next year when 5-12 all play each other that weekend. And no one will care at all about these other games. Many of these bowls may go the way of the dodo bird.

Anyone know the reason he is leaving TOSU? I don't get it; he led them to victory over ND! Rumor was that he asked for assurances regarding starting next year (in light of the Michigan loss and some other criticism he received) and asked for additional NIL dollars. He got neither. Word is Syracuse offered both. There was some surprise that the guy who only lost one game (and it was by 6 to top-ranked Michigan at Michigan) would drop all the way down to Syracuse but that’s another story.

Leonard’s an undergraduate one-year transfer so ND looks to have his successor in place (Carr). BTW Leonard is VERY unusual as an undergraduate upper class transfer to ND. They really don’t do that sort of thing so he must have a strong Duke transcript.

Players should be allowed to use the portal to transfer to another school only. after the team's last game, including bowl games. Not a fan of OSU but losing the qb through the portal prior to the Cotton Bowl did not seem right to me.Can't do much about Marvin Harrison, Jr. opting out of the game to avoid injury prior to the NFL draft. But, certainly the NCAA could adopt a policy limiting ;portal transfers out of a program until after a team's final game including bowl games. The bowl games will become more of an afterthought if the teams' best players are not playing. Note Missouri ranked #9 had no players lost to the portal nor did any opt out. Surely, they had some good players who could have chosen to transfer. Listening to the two Mizzou, game MVP's it was clear they bonded together as a team. Obviously, the coach & the type of player play an important role in the choice of entering the transfer portal. OSU Coach, Ryan Day is on the hot seat among the Buckeye faithful. Expect the state legislature will call for his removal. 11-2 but with a close loss to Michigan & losing to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl is considered a failure. Fire the coach! HA!!!
PS Post my comment, I came across an article in today's WaPo addressing the chaotic bowl season mess. Due to my lack of internet skills I have no idea how to forward the article to this site.

My main concern with not letting players transfers until the season is over is you don't have much, if any, time before the next semester starts in some of these cases.

I’ve heard it twice in the last week on different broadcasts that ND is being more flexible in various ways to try to help the football team compete with the big boys. Leonard is a good example.

I don't watch much FBS football anymore but it seems as if bowl games nowadays pit team A's second stringers v. team B's second stringers.

Borderline unwatchable.....It may have been Mizzou's Super Bowl, but TOSU can't let that happen........They knew about the QB and WR not playing weeks ago.....To show at one of the legacy bowls that undermanned and unprepared is unacceptable......Ryan Day may not survive this while being paid $ 10 million a year.......OSU boards are already screaming about " its 1490 days and counting since OSU last beat Michigan " and " Hire Vrabel !! "...We'll see.. Maybe with the UNH connection, Coach Curran may be able to add a fresh offensive mind to his staff

ND has 13 scholarship players in the portal, 9 of whom have found new homes (TCU (2), UVA, Cal (2), UCLA, NC State, Tennessee, Purdue). ND has added 6 players so far from the portal (from Duke (2), FIU, South Carolina, ASU, Clemson). Of the top 20 teams, I’ll guess ND is on the lower end of portal activity.

Not sure about overall portal activity but Notre Dame has long distinguished between incoming upperclass undergraduate transfers (very selective) and incoming graduate ‘transfers’. Which made Riley Leonard (upperclass undergraduate transfer, Duke) a relatively unusual move.

No idea where he is academically.

Nice idea in principle but it would last only as long as it took for a court to say "permanent injunction." Opening and closing dates have to be the same for all players. Can't penalize a player because he is on a good team or reward one because he is on a bad team.
