Let's put media hype to the side. The media is always looking for a defining event headline to hype ratings. 24 hour "news"/sports cycle. Was Belichik a GOAT NFL coach? Or, was his success due in large part to GOAT QB Tom Brady? Can't be both. Belichik never won a super Bowl w/o Brady. Whereas, Brady won in Tampa Bay w/out Belichik.. I believe Coach B's w-l record w/out Brady was mediocre. Belichik out. Pete Carroll out. Nick Saban unquestionably a college GOAT coach, out. Father Time.

Every great coach has great players and visa versa. I can't stand this debate and it's meaningless. It's crazy to think my kids 21 and 19 have never seen a Patriots coaching change until today.

I understand the announcement was not that he was retiring which I thought he would do to save face. Would he consider being Amanda’s assistant LAX coach at Holy Cross? 🤔
Good luck wherever you end up, Bill.

I'll be a contrarian to keep the conversation going. Did Belichick teach sixth round draft pick Brady how to be a great quarterback? I always felt that Brady's success was based, at least in part, on his ability to know where everyone on both teams would be on every play and to capitalize on that information. That demanded hard work and a lot of study. Did Belichick and/or his staffers instill that discipline in Brady? During the glory years, great players wanted to come to Foxboro and play for the Pats. Did they come to play with Brady or for Belichick? Probably both. Maybe BB goes to Atlanta and leads them to a championship. We will certainly have to factor that into the GOAT determination.

They came because they wanted to WIN: more Brady, more Bill didn't matter
Players want to win

Let's see what the next chapter is for Belichick if he starts somewhere without Brady and take another team to the Super Bowl, than he's up there with Lombardi.

Is BB a competent/good professional coach who benefitted from the play of TB? Would other competent coaches have done as well or better in the same situation w/Brady? We'll never know. I wonder what Coach Belichik would in all honesty say? Look, I harbor no animosity toward BB. It would be ridiculous. Don't know him. Never followed him. Obviously, he's a great guy. Wish him well & a long happy life.God Bless him. My point was about media hype in sports as in everything else from aging to medical breakthroughs to religion and even the weather & everything in-between. (Skipped the obvious, p.) It seems we have lots of storms of the century ( a pr media invention?) & a multiplicity of GOAT's (a pr media invention?) Off the soapbox.Time for my Graham Crackers & milk. Back to the rocking chair.

Didn't Lombardi leave Green Bay and flop at Washington? Duh! Yeah, but they still name a trophy after him, don't they? If Billy can win elsewhere, they will rename that trophy. I'm thinking his next gig won't be football but likely stand up comedian. Look at his press conferences. The guy is a barrel of laughs. And he's got the deadpan look down pat (no, not "pats" like in "patriots")

Didn't Lombardi leave Green Bay and flop at Washington? Getting fatally ill after one season had more than a little a bit to do with his "flopping". And, for the record, he won 7 games his first year at both Washington and Green Bay.

Brady was a great quarterback. Belichik was a great coach. The combination was magic and led to unprecedented success.
By my count Belichik has eight championships. I count the two as DC for the Giants. In one of the 30 for 30 movies, they said something to the effect that the defensive game plan in the Bills Super Bowl win was in Canton
Going into this season, Belichik's record with the Pats and no Brady was better than most people think. During the Brady years when Brady was out for whatever reason, the Pats still did pretty well - including double digit wins the year Cassel was at the helm and 3-1 when Brady was suspended because there was a possibility that footballs were deflated (and if they were in fact deflated, Brady had to be complicit. )
I think Belichik wants to still coach to get the all time record. I also think he is not as good as he once was. Nepotism may have hurt his staffs. The game might be passing him by. Today's 25 year olds might not tolerate a coach ripping them a new one if they mess up.
Julian Edelman made a comment a month or so ago that the Patriots biggest problem is their big first round quarterback draft pick has been a total bust. Since Belichik is also the GM that is on him

Yes, it's not so much BB the coach; it's BB responsible for the talent that's there and is for the most part non-existent on the offensive side of the ball.
On the other hand, those Pats fans on here who think it can't get worse than this need only look at Holy Cross basketball the last 13 years.

Since this is our active NFL thread, re the Chiefs-Dolphins playoff game at Arrowhead on Saturday, 11 degrees during the day, zero at kickoff with wind chill making it feel colder - disappointing they can't move it up to noon or 1pm but of course TV revenue pays the bills.

Not so much for fans, but these kind of conditions tend to give a bigger home field advantage when the visitors are from a warmer region. The Chiefs might not want an earlier game

Not so much for fans, but these kind of conditions tend to give a bigger home field advantage when the visitors are from a warmer region. The Chiefs might not want an earlier game Especially since the Dolphins are notorious for creating a massive home field advantage for themselves in Miami by having away team's bench in the sun and their own in the shade. They also elect to wear white home jerseys and have the opponent wear solid color.

Know someone who played in the '67 Ice Bowl. Said it was worse on the field than anyone could have imagined. I was at Fitton in'66 to watch HC "scrimmage" against UConn 2 weeks prior to our historic win at Alumni. In those days the UConn game was a "warm-up" for the BC game. The Fitton stands were covered in ice. Almost no-one was at the game. Most were in the dorms watching another one of those "Games of the Century" ND vs MSU which MSU won in a 10-10 tie that preserved ND's national championship but cost them the respect of football fans across the nation. Damn was it cold at Fitton, extremely uncomfortable. As expected HC easily won in a lackluster game. It was too cold. Can't begin to imagine Lambeau on that day in '67.

In the picture above, those "clouds" of vapor around the fans make it look like they set their clothes on fire to try to stay warm.

The fans in the stands maybe don't have things better, but to some degree the players do. Equipment to alleviate the conditions much more advanced than 56 years ago. Including the heating system under the field; back in '67 it was innovative but failed miserably, probably making the field even worse. Trivia point- no whistles blown in that game after the initial whistle stuck frozen to the head referee's lips. Similar game in 2007-8 between the Packers and Giants- Tom Coughlin's face was as red as the Chiefs' jersies.

Bill the coach replaced by Jerod Mayo; not sure if that's a wise move before hiring Bill the GM.
I guess one train of thought is at this point if the new GM gives Mayo talent improvement practically everywhere on the offensive side they can work out the details later.

Didn't Lombardi leave Green Bay and flop at Washington? Not a flop at Washington. Went 7-5-2 in his only year before his illness. That record was Washington’s first winning season in 14 years. Had he survived he may have replicated his GB success.
