Many thanks to all of our posters for so many kind comments regarding this pancreatic cancer.Given the facts that my father lived to 88 and my mother to 95, I was surprised by my diagnosis in early October. However, oncologists have explained that the same gene that gave my sister a disposition toward an early death from breast cancer, has now affected me. I am at peace with all this, assisted by the support and prayers of so many of you, and by a lifelong faith that our Lord has been leading me on a beautiful pilgrimage home to our Father. For these graces, I could not be more grateful.
My journey through life has been an unexpectedly wonderful one--including the dedication of the field last April and the naming of the women's crew boat in 2013. (A long name requires something long enough to display it properly. VOILA!) Our athletic program has given much more to me than I have to it; and my happy association with coaches, student/athletes, parents of athletes, with our athletic trainers, with Sports Information, all the support staff, administrators in the athletic office, and everybody connected with our Athletic Department . That list, of course, targets just the athletic group. A complete list would include faculty colleagues (especially History, College administrators, Library, Kimball and Hogan, Post Office, Chaplains, ITS, Registrar),--all those places whose people invariably offer service with a smile.
I cannot possibly offer a personal response to all the many well-wishers among you; you will remain much in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for offering to a Polish kid from Milwaukee and a PACKER fan to boot, great place and wonderful community within which to grow from a young man to an older one. ( I could have done a lot worse!) My prayers and good wishes remain with you. As Tiny Tim put it so well: "God bless us, every one."

FWIW, Fr. Boroughs has recently become an American citizen (he was born in Vancouver), and he stood for the anthem at that game. I believe he was in the president's box at that time.

The basketball arena re-opens today for practice by our men's and women's teams. Big Crusader emblem in the middle of the court, with the Patriot League presented in the paint at both ends. The lobby looks much the same, but with new carpeting and an enhanced presentation of the Varsity Club Hall of Fame awardees. Concessions seem unchanged. The main entry is supposed to be done by the end of the month. For now, we still enter the athletic complex through the back.

On the O-Team bus en route home, between Danbury and Waterbury. Great jubilation in the locker room post game, both coaches and players. I was delighted to lead a prayer on an occasion when we all had smiles on our faces. Great elan in the bus, both yesterday and today. PP has been a very active force as sidelined captain. On to Fitton!

I attended the reception for faculty at the Joyce Contemplative Center yesterday. I had been at the site while construction was under way, but this was my first time in the new building. The whole set-up took my breath away. The architect had several Ignatian texts to work with, and incorporated a number of these ideas into the design of the building. The lighting in the chapel, for instance, evokes the statement of Ignatius that, when he gazed at the stars, he was moved to generosity. The bedrooms have a variety of shapes, all with a comfortable chair and good lighting and large windows. The dining room's windows also take in "the view."
All the permits and inspections are now complete. The first student retreats take place there this weekend.
What an absolutely fantastic addition to our resources and spaces!

Thanks for sharing, Fr. K. Good but unsurprising news. Admittedly a tangent but hazing has not been something that I have ever associated with Holy Cross. In fact, I recall my father ('42) told me years ago before I went to Holy Cross that one of the reasons that there were no fraternities at Holy Cross (other Jesuit institutions too?) was that the school (Jesuits?) did not want the prevalent hazing and insular exclusivity associated with fraternities. On the contrary, when he was a student there, it was an unspoken rule that every student passing by another student on campus was to exchange hellos whether or not you knew the other guy and regardless of whether you were classmates and seniors were to exchange greetings even with freshmen. A simpler time, perhaps, as I can't recall the friendly hellos being universally done in the late 60s but there was no hazing at all. One of the things that I enjoy and am very proud of about Holy Cross is that when my wife and I are up on campus whether for reunions, President Council meetings, or sporting events, the other alums are universally friendly, especially the older alums. The guys from the 40's and 50's are especially warm and family-like to we "younger" alums who are "only in our late 60's." Speaking of the Class of '42, did you catch this segment from last Monday's Steven Colbert show?

College of the Holy Cross Dear Members of the Holy Cross Community,
As we embark on a new academic year, I wanted to provide an update on the review we undertook last semester regarding the practices and culture in our athletic program as they relate to hazing. In January, I told you that we asked attorney Philip Catanzano to lead this review, due to his expertise and experience with intercollegiate athletics as an attorney and investigator at the U.S. Department of Education and at the law firm of Holland & Knight.
The findings of the review, which included interviews with 49 student-athletes from 16 teams and 21 faculty, administrators and Department of Athletics staff, were largely positive. The investigators found that there was no evidence of a prevalent practice of hazing within the Department of Athletics nor is there a culture in which hazing would be condoned.
The report contained four recommendations which we plan to implement as we continue to strive to sustain a safe and respectful working and learning environment:
Recommendation: Enhanced Training Regarding Hazing
The Department of Athletics will be undertaking more robust training beginning with the first team meetings this fall. Assistant Athletics Director Ryan Colton will meet with all sports teams to establish the Department’s expectations for conduct and policies regarding hazing. Additional training for all student-athletes will occur during the fall semester through an enhanced online education software application.
Recommendation: Verify Full Compliance with the Massachusetts Hazing Statute
The report found that our Department of Athletics is in compliance with the Massachusetts Hazing Statute. The review did not include other College groups, club teams or organizations outside of the Department of Athletics. The College is working to verify full compliance for all relevant groups, teams and organizations.
Recommendation: Establish Mechanisms to Encourage Reporting
The Department of Athletics, which has an established protocol for reporting, is working with the Divisions of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, as well as our General Counsel and others, to address this recommendation.
Recommendation: Building Consensus between Athletics and Academics
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Margaret Freije and Director of Athletics Nathan Pine are working closely to create more opportunities for dialogue and conversation between the faculty and members of the Department of Athletics.
While we are confident in the results of this thorough review, we will continue to actively work to ensure that all of our students, faculty and staff are able to work and learn as members of a respectful community that lives our mission and values.
Sincerely,
Boroughs
Philip L. Boroughs, S.J. President

Actually, they found them pretty quickly. The tree cut down was located near Loyola and a Jesuit or one of the employees in Loyola saw the culprits cutting it down and wrote down the license plate of the car they used to transport it. Turns out the car belonged to one of the Head RAs in Mulledy who had loaned his car to 3 guys on the Mulledy House Council who were charged with getting a tree for the party. I think the tree they selected was worth a couple thousand dollars. D'oh! We ended up with the tree as our Christmas tree in the rec room when the Jesuit community was still in Loyola Hall. Some wag mad a banner for the upper part of the tree that read: "$2000."

Another innovation this year: with the Luth construction project underway, the lawn is not available for the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Saturday. That event will be held on the football field. I believe this will be the first College Mass on Fitton Field since the military Masses of a former era. (There was, at some point, a public Mass there with the comatose body of Little Audrey, a local phenomenon celebrated by some as a "victim soul," though that designation was not supported by authorities in the Diocese of Worcester.) The Baccalaureate Mass last May was held on the baseball field. At that time, the football field was in the process of having its grass replaced. This new venue on the football field should reduce the amount of noise from I-290, a minor issue during the Baccalaureate Mass.

Recently, Billy Hackett, great past goalie of our team, passed along to me a trophy he had won as the MVP for the West squad in the East-West New England All-Star Game in 1994. I was happy to drop it off at Judd Lattimore's office, where it is now on display to inspire the members of our team. Bonnie took a picture of Coach L. standing next to the trophy--a picture I texted to Billy, who is now teaching at a Christo Rey network school in South Los Angeles. A man for others, Billy is a credit to his alma mater, his family, and the tradition of Purple athletics.

Preparations for the Class of 2020 (and returning upperclassmen) are running at fever pitch this week. The trench that will carry supplemental electrical power to the Luth building and, eventually, the performing arts center, runs from the south side of the Hart Center down the hill, across the lawn of Ciampi Hall, and eventually down to College Street. Traffic patterns are different every day between Hogan and the exit on College Street. Meanwhile, the ballroom area has been re-vamped over the summer and crews are working like mad to have it ready for this coming weekend. The summer of drought here has provided good weather for work on the new athletic complex, whose bare bones are more visible every day.
Edward Bennett Williams used to extol the goal of "having the dirt fly." He'd very pleased these days.

mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/155dfd5a2122ce84Good news from Tracy Barlok Winter, spring, summer, fall — Holy Cross is home! A Message from Vice President for Advancement Tracy W. Barlok P19 It was a record-breaking year for Holy Cross! A total of 21,074 alumni, parents, students, employees, and friends made gifts to the College, and we once again surpassed 50 percent participation in alumni giving. Give Purple, our challenge held during Winter Homecoming weekend, was an enormous success, building pride and excitement in our community. And we kicked off the public phase of the Become More campaign, an effort that will strengthen every dimension of the Holy Cross experience. We had a record year in total giving to Holy Cross with $46.7 million raised. $9.6 million was directed as current-use dollars to the Holy Cross Fund and $1.6 million was designated to the Crusader Athletics Fund. 427 members of the class of 2016 made a gift to the school, setting a new modern-day high participation record for the senior class gift effort at 60.3 percent. Holy Cross parents also supported the College at record levels and the Senior Parent Gift topped $1 million for the first time in our history. Many alumni and friends supported the College through life-income arrangements and we are especially grateful to those who remembered Holy Cross in their estate plans. Our alumni and parents participated in more than 240 club events throughout the year, ensuring a continuum of positive influence intellectually, professionally, and socially. And, our Holy Cross brand certainly gained national attention during our March Madness NCAA Men’s basketball run! The many successes of the past year illuminate a new era that is dawning on Mount St. James. Appropriate to our Jesuit tradition, we are becoming more. This process of transformation is exciting and uplifting. The sense of our momentum as an institution that is expanding and deepening its core strengths is palpable. Our goal for the future is nothing less than the betterment of our world. And to witness the passion of the Holy Cross community as it engages with this process is thrilling and inspiring. Your belief in the mission of this College is what sustains and encourages us all as we immerse ourselves in this important and joyful work. I am incredibly grateful for the hard work of my colleagues in Advancement and across campus and especially to the many extraordinary volunteers who ensure engagement and support of the College remains top of mind. We know we cannot bring Holy Cross into the future without your support and involvement. All of your efforts on behalf of Holy Cross are truly appreciated and valued. As we welcome the Class of 2020 later this summer, we will remind them that this College is in a position of great strength precisely because of your love, participation, and support. Your example, your faith, your integrity, and your sense of responsibility inspire our students as much as any other lesson they learn here. Thank you. I hope you enjoy this video — and that it reminds you of why you love Holy Cross.

the first mention I noticed was his retirement, well semi retirement from teaching. Congratulations, Father the second was in the feature on football player, Andre Harton, who credits Fr. K with motivating him to major in History. well done Fr. K Thank you! Fr. Boroughs and I were in the same small community (12 Jesuits) together as seminarians in Chicago. When he arrived at Holy Cross, I told him to ask me, if he saw something else I could do. After due consideration on his part, and then on mine, I accepted his offer to split my time 50/50 between the History Department and the Alumni Office. The new arrangement started July 1. Normal teaching load on the 3-2 faculty schedule would be ten courses in two years. I'll be teaching five courses in two years, with the rest of my time going to the development office. Having been here a total of 36 years (1974-76, and continuously since 1981), I know quite a few of the alumni through the classroom and through work as team chaplain. I look forward to getting to know more and to being in touch in my new capacity. Can this old dog learn new tricks? Stay tuned....

How many sins or perhaps morally ambiguous (or worse) transgressions are we likely to find if every institution and organization that dates back to the 19th century does a thorough personality profile of its founders and key contributors? Craig Steven Wilder addresses the connection between higher ed and slavery in his book EBONY AND IVORY. The subtitle: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America's Universities. Many or most schools, north and south, were financed in some way by slavery before the Civil War. Members of the committee here read the book during the Christmas break.

The turf has been completely removed from the football field as they start from fresh with the grass. Wish 'em well. The playing field had gotten a bit rough in recent years.
