One of the great senior classes in the history of Holy Cross women’s basketball': This foursome brought Crusaders to new heights Jennifer Toland www.telegram.com/story/sports/college/2024/03/25/holy-cross-senior-foursome-left-mark-on-womens-basketball-program/73097752007/Worcester Telegram & Gazette Embracing Holy Cross’ four seniors as they came to the bench for the final time late in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament first-round game at Iowa was an emotional moment for tearful HC coach Maureen Magarity. With the resolute foursome leading the way, the No. 16 seed Crusaders gave a valiant effort against the top-seeded Hawkeyes and superstar Caitlin Clark in the 91-65 loss, and, just as Magarity knew they would, represented themselves, the program, the college, the Patriot League and the state of Massachusetts with pride. “The four seniors we have,” Magarity said after the game, “they’ve just had so many milestones, and will go down as one of the great senior classes in the history of Holy Cross women’s basketball. I’m really sad to see it come to an end, but I’m just so, so grateful for their effort. I’m just so proud of them.” Four-year seniors and tri-captains Bronagh Power-Cassidy, Janelle Allen and Cara McCormack led the Crusaders to a record of 72-41, two regular-season Patriot League titles, two PL tournament championships and three national postseason appearances (two NCAA, WNIT). Senior Callie Wright, who transferred to Holy Cross from Memphis last year, was part of the 2022-23 team that went 24-9 and tied for the second most single-season wins in program history. Wright earned a starting spot late this season. By beating Tennessee-Martin in an NCAA First Four matchup last Thursday, the Crusaders became just the second Patriot League women’s team to win an NCAA game. The 1991 HC team was the first with its victory over Maryland. Buoyed by the triumph over UT Martin and their season-long confidence, the Crusaders were not intimidated by the sold-out and partisan crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, the national TV audience watching on ABC, or the daunting task of taking on Clark, who, this season became the all-time NCAA Division 1 scoring leader. The Crusaders frustrated Clark early, and that was evident. In the first quarter, she had five points and five turnovers, and, after one, HC trailed by just two points. “I think we just wanted to be in the moment,” Power-Cassidy said, “and give everything we had every shot because they’re a phenomenal team, but we just wanted to go out playing our style of basketball and celebrating each other. We enjoy playing with each other, so I think that was the most important thing and just play fearlessly. I think we do that as a team, regardless of the stage, that’s how we want to play.” Clark finished with 27 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. Power-Cassidy, who was playing with a broken hand suffered in the PL final against Boston University, led HC with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. “Just another reason why she is just the most incredible player I have ever coached,” Magarity said. Power-Cassidy finished her Holy Cross career with 1,425 points (15th all time), 196 3-pointers (fourth) and 37.8 3-point percentage (tied for sixth). Allen added 18 points and McCormack 11 against the Hawkeyes. Power-Cassidy, Allen and McCormack were freshmen during the abbreviated COVID season, Magarity’s first at HC, and did a terrific job cultivating the program’s competitive, supportive and successful culture. The highlight of last offseason for the Crusaders was their eight-day tour of Ireland, Power-Cassidy’s homeland, where they visited landmarks, played games against the Irish national team and a Cork club team, and spent time with Power-Cassidy’s family. Holy Cross began the 2023-24 season with a five-point loss at Boston College, and finished its nonconference schedule 6-5. The Crusaders won their first eight Patriot League games, and bounced back from a four-game losing streak in February to capture the regular-season PL title, and go on to win their 13th PL tourney championship before a spirited St. Patrick’s Day crowd at the Hart Center. “I just don’t want this season to end,” Power-Cassidy said. “I just want to keep wearing purple.” —Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com. Clark is hands down the biggest name the WNBA has ever had. She will fill arenas for sure her rookie year but will be interesting to see if/how soon that interest fades. It's possible that the WNBA just will never reach the level of interest that NCAA Division I basketball generates. We will see but I am not sure Clark will be the biggest name the WNBA has ever had - I think I would go with Diana Taurasi.or Sue Bird. I would be curious how Geno Auriemma would have dealt with Clark's antics on Saturday. As I recall, Taurasi was somewhat of a diva as well. Iowa's coach, Bluder, was asked about Clark's behavior (in the HC game) in the pre-game presser for tonight's game against West Virginia. She didn't go into detail but commented she had a long talk with Clark yesterday. I wouldn't normally watch this game but I am curious how she plays in the game tonight against WVU - especially after WVU's coach had made some early comments that they were going to send Clark "packing". He has since walked back from those comments Did anyone watch the Stanford/Iowa State women's game last night? - if you thought the HC/Iowa game was physical - that game was much more physical. It would not have been an issue. Rarely saw any of Gino's players get away with that stuff outside of the 1st or 2nd year, although I must admit if Taurasi thought it was intentional she might of come up swinging. The Iowa State game was brutal - alot of pushing & hard fouls.

Question relates only to HC, but Avery’s success in her year in the Big 10 at Wisconsin is significant No changing the rules!

I would rank Amy O'Brien ahead of all three. Scoring, rebounding and defense - all around player of the game. Sherry Levin a close second, then Lauren. All could play for any team in the USA. Sherry was the cornerstone from which the program's success over the next 25 years began.

I have not done any research to determine f this is true but logically the LOI goes beyond the initial commitment, it is an agreement to use your college eligibility at the school you sign with. If the student has not exhausted their eligibility, the school has to release them from the commitment to play their final year of eligibility somewhere other than Holy Cross. It makes little difference to us since we do not have a grad school and presume BPC is going to graduate in May with her class. But it makes a lot of difference to any school which does have grad programs. In BPC's case, presuming she will graduate in May, transferring is the formal process which will release her from her final season of eligibility at Holy Cross. I suspect you had to formally request a transfer before "the portal" existed, and that process has not changed, it is just much more public now. Like I said, I do not know if that is true, but it seems to make sense. I found the following in some fairly recent NCAA FAQs: Division I student-athletes must complete the Division I Transfer Module and notify their current school in writing of their desire to be entered into the NCAA Transfer Portal. Student-athletes may not speak to other schools about transferring directly or indirectly through others (e.g., family member, scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor, former teammates) until they receive notice that they have been input into the Transfer Portal. Please consult the Division I Notification of Transfer resource. » Undergraduate students: The majority of undergraduate student-athletes in Division I may only be entered into the Transfer Portal during the sport-specific transfer window for their sport. A campus compliance administrator will clarify when an undergraduate student-athlete is able to be entered into the Transfer Portal during a particular time of year, including whether any exceptions apply to a student-athlete’s circumstances (e.g., their head coach takes a new job). » Postgraduate students: Student-athletes who are on track to complete their undergraduate degree by end of the year (e.g., two semesters) may be entered into the Transfer Portal at any time. Q2: What happens if communications occur with athletics staff or boosters at the Division I school to which a student-athlete ultimately transfers prior to when the student-athlete first appeared in the Transfer Portal? A2: Communicating with another Division I school’s athletics staff prior to entering the Transfer Portal can jeopardize a student-athlete’s future eligibility at that school. Existing recruiting rules prohibit communicating with a student-athlete who is enrolled at another Division I school prior to the student-athlete appearing in the Transfer Portal. These rules extend to indirect contact made by third parties on the student-athlete’s behalf (e.g., family member, scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor, former teammates). Certain violations of these rules can constitute a significant breach of conduct as it relates to the NCAA infractions process.

What a tough question, I'm inclined to with Manis as #1 as the best all-round player and a toss-up between AL & BPC for #2. I'd probably go w/ BPC because of the team success, but could easily be persuaded otherwise.

It will be interesting to see how her game translates to the WNBA. Will it take her a while to find her way as it did a bit for Kelsey Plum?

A telling stat for Clark, beside the 3-9 from three, is that although she had 10 assists, she also had 6 of her team’s 14 turnovers Credit the HC D HC's defense was stout all game, make the other gals beat you, unfortunately, they did.

Why would she leave HC? I thought the women were selecting a school not a sports franchise as seemingly do some of the men. Uh, she on schedule to graduate, great opportunity to start a psot-grad degree maybe

Well, seeing how they've basically had zero coverage for most games, even home games that last few years, I guess we will have to settle for the crumbs. Remember the good old days when the T& G use to hire stringers for the away games? In particular, I remember a very good writer who covered the PA games & used to post on the board Chris Courogen (sp)? Chris was very knowledgeable about PL hoops and did the PL write-ups for Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook for a number of years. Use to have a great blog, Hoop Times if IIRC.
