Yeah, because it’s super common to tell your freshman of the year and returning cornerstone that he’s not in your plans going forward. Can I have some of what you’re smoking? It’s also incredibly condescending to suggest that we all know what is in JP’s interests more than he does. I said "IF things don't work out." That implies that JP doesn't get as many mins as he wants, doesn't like the new coach, doesn't like the new school's environment, etc., etc., etc. IF...god forbid....that happens, I don't believe it is "condescending" to say he would regret his decision. Also, I never said "he's not in your plans." I said "his role...drastically reduced." This season he was Mr. Everything and received lots of recognitions. That could go to a young man's head. Next season, the betting is that his role will be reduced because he has more talent around him. (Black & White Thinking....it's a Logical Fallacy.....you committed it.......look it up....thanks) Good clarifications, but being a sophomore, junior and senior in college and being on the basketball team is good living and the foundation for lifelong relationships and great memories no matter what college you attend. If you star or even contribute at URI and then go into business in RI you have a nice wind behind your sails, as an example. I just hope Joe is still being recruited to stay at HC in conjunction to being recruited to leave. Entering the portal is not same as transferring. I don't agree with the "You're dead to me" approach when a player enters the portal.

I think what got this discussion off on the wrong foot was the infinitesimal possibility that your hypothetical might come to pass "Caveat: Unless what prompted this was BN telling JP that his role would be drastically reduced in the future." We might just as well ask: "Caveat: we might well lose Ayir Asante if Coach Chesney asks him to move to left tackle next season"

I taught Logic for seven years as a professor and established the Logical Fallacy Contest at the college. So I don't think you can "pull rank" on me.....when it comes to Logic.

I overlook emoticons as a policy, but I take your point. I don't think the possibility of JP's decision turning out to be regretful is "infinitesimal." I wonder if anyone has counseled him such.

I see two sides to this story. To what extent should the school be held hostage while a student goes shopping for better offers? Lowder and Hargis decided they were entering the portal. Coach Nelson gave put out offers for their scholarships right away. If he had waited until the players in the portal landed someplace else and actually transferred, there might not be a 2020-21 team

I guess that comes under get old axiom..."Be careful what you wish for. You may get it." If an athlete, for any of several reasons as we have heard here. devices to move on they should not be held prisoner. They should be free to move on, but they should not expect the college/team to wait before replacing them.

Who knows initially how a transfer will work out for the transferor? The transferor could very well regret the decision at some point.

Just curious, if a player enters the portal and the coach moves on and doesn’t hold a scholarship for him and then just before school starts, the kid says I want to return, can he play as a walk on with regular financial aid or is he still considered a recruited player which would place the roster over the allowed 13 scollie player limit. Inquiring minds want to know.

If he had been recruited, I believe he would still be counted as a recruited player (even if he has given up his scholarship). But the NCAA seems to find new ways to screw things up every year, so I am not sure.

I wouldn't give up his scholarship until he has actually transferred. Worst case scenario is you have a schollie in your back pocket after Joe signs elsewhere and maybe HC is eating one less full scholarship if the 20-21 season can't be played. Just reading the post about the Arkansas "interest" reveals there is nothing guaranteed until a signing takes place. Joe doesn't have a right to have his scholarship held but Nelson is not obligated to rush out and give it away either. But I'll still be rooting for the laundry no matter who is wearing it.

Do you ignore facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice as policy too? That's the function of emoticons on message boards and other forms of informal communications in 2020. To ignore them is to ignore important components of the message.

Come on, you know better. The hypothetical that is of infinitesimal probability is that Coach would tell JP that his role would be significantly reduced. You know that. Time to cut your losses.

KY- Given what we know from here, do you think that JP's role next season would be something less than what it was this seas on? If so, the question is: How does JP feel about the changed role. Maybe it is a bigger negative in JP's mind than in yours or mine. That's what I am speculating about. We don't even know if BN had a direct conversation with JP about this matter.

The only way JP's role next season, in any program on the planet, would be greater than his role this season for HC, would be if he transferred back to Governor's Academy. And maybe not even there.

I kind of like the current system where a player can move but has to sit a year. These kids aren't slaves. They should be allowed to move. Still, I like the idea that there's a consequence for your actions. Yes, you can move if you made a teenage mistake and picked the wrong school, but there isn't a free reset on backing out of commitments. Plus there's the added benefit it reduces the incentive of unscrupulous coaches poaching other programs

I didn't know it was the school not the player who enters the name in the portal and a counseling session occurs beforehand. I wonder who the counselor at HC is, somebody from the actual Counseling Center or somebody like the AD?
