Unlike the meltdowns vs. AF and Bryant, HC comes out strong to start the second half, as Luc ignites an 8-0 run. UNH, 33-27, 17m left. Down 17 now

So are any Kennedy's still available? I'll even take the weird anti-vaxxer.

Both halves, UNH shut us out between the 16 minute time out and the 12 minute time out.

These announcers can sugarcoat anything Their glasses aren't half full, they're spilling over. Gordie Lockbaum was the last HC color commentator to call it like it is. He had seen excellence under Duffner and had a hard time putting up with less.

They play hard but it appears they're just not very good. Need to start questioning whether the level of talent is good enough. May be good athletes but not good basketball players. Hope I'm wrong but so far they haven't really been competitive against mid level D1 opposition.

HC defense has now left the building. UNH, 66-51, 1 1/2 left.

Didn’t want to be 0-5 heading into Central, but here we are.
I fear that if we don’t beat Central, we aren’t winning a game in the non-conference.

But I doubt they recognize how we can’t play at that pace depressing

In general the team lacks the most basic skill in the game they can't throw the ball in the ocean. There are obviously other issues but you can't win if you can't score the ball.

From what I have seen, they give up a lot of easy baskets. If you can’t put the ball in the hoop, you obviously have to prevent the other team from doing so.

HC came into the game ranked 301st in 2FG% (43.2%), and 345th in defending twos (59.2%)

Not a good team right now. I wish we were better.
But I also am still mystified at how many people are just completely ignoring the absolute dumpster fire that Nelson inherited from a semi-retired coach and a program that was neglected for 10 years, and just pretending that we should be setting the world on fire already. Some very short memories, I guess.
We were on the way to a starting lineup of the following this year: PG: Unknown Frosh/Soph (no way Lowder was lasting this long) SG: Wade SF: Hargris/Unknown Frosh/Soph (no way Pridgen was lasting this long) PF: Hargris/Unknown Frosh/Soph C: Verbeek
The results are dog crap right now, but I will fight anyone* who says we are not in a better place right now than we would have been with that pile of garbage.
If anyone can find a program with any academic requirements who turned things around in 28 months after being where HC was in July 2019, I would absolutely love to hear it. I’m all ears.
—- Re: Today’s box score (I couldn’t watch the game): -We just aren’t going to be a good team if Martindale is going to continue to have nights where he is invisible on offense. We desperately need two of the Martindale-Bo-Bubba threesome to step up and consistently contribute. -UNH’s two senior forwards dominated with 30 points and 13 rebounds (6-9 2FG, 9-10 FT) vs 9 & 9 (4-15 2 FG, 0-1 FT) for Gates & Louth. I don’t expect Gates to have many more performances like tonight, and Louth’s best games are ahead of him. -13-37 (.351) on 2FGs is dreadful. I am not expecting us to be a prolific 3-point shooting team at this point, but we have absolutely no chance if we also can’t score inside the arc.

16 points from a Division 1 frontcourt.
From what I can see, our best 3 point shooter is Martindale. I gotta think the much-maligned Bill Carmody would have figured out how to get him some shots.

Nelson did inherit a difficult situation, that became more problematic with transfers. With the new additions it takes time for major improvement to take place, but it is hard to see incremental improvements or even the building blocks from half to half or game to game.
So while patience is needed, so is some evidence of progress.

Left the game with about 7 minutes left. It was a long day after the football win and while I had hope that we'd do better and show improvement against UNH, we didn't.
Here's the bottom line and sorry that it happens to be a Crossports cliche but "we just don't shoot it well" I'm not talking about contested shots, I'm talking about wide open shots that, unfortunately, every team we play, even D-3 teams, make pretty consistently. We have no outside shooters though I thought maybe Luc was one. Martindale is streaky but not on today (unless he was after I left). With no outside threat, UNH could pack it in on Louth and Gates inside. I, too noticed that loose 50/50 balls seem to be 90/10 for the opponents we play.
Bottom line: no discernable progress.
Wonder it there is a certain number of wins that the Nelson supporters who think he will turn things around will agree that maybe he isn't the right guy. Like 5 or fewer? That, knowing he already has 2 against D-3 teams.

I can’t understand the extent of the apologists on this thread. Isn’t it patently obvious? It’s time to move on. Blame the quality of the recruiting? Yes. Question the preparation? Yes.

Hopefully he rights the ship real soon.

I just worry that a losing culture is taking deep roots. Even the positive ending to last season seems distant.
Regarding today, just one question from me: why is it taking so long to get Townsel in the game? I dont get it - he works his tail off, and can actually make some plays offensively. Makes no sense to me.
