In looking for KenPom preseason rankings which I understand are not out yet, I came across another site I hadn't heard of, barttorvik.com. Interesting that it puts HC second behind American. Here are the rankings and the link to the site. Probably not worth much, but I like that it agrees with my optimism. American 186 HC 197 Lehigh 198 Bucknell 203 Army 206 Boston U 220 Colgate 227 Lafayette 279 Navy 283 Loyola 306 www.barttorvik.com/?conlimit=Pat&state=All&year=2019&sort=

I was at the game with a big group of friends including my then fiance (now wife). We were 10-0 going into the game and we already enjoyed the exciting win at Army the prior month. My wife is a BC grad '82 (and mother of two HC daughters '12 and '15) and I remember teasing her when we went up 14-0, thinking we might blow them out of the stadium. Then everything just fell apart. She is hoping for a repeat performance on Saturday.

Good for him. He is moving up. Why hasn’t Howard just hired him yet? I wonder whether the Howard head coaching job would entail a pay cut for an assistant at Pitt.

3,717 gifts at 5:45pm. Slightly behind last year but quite an accomplishment with six hours to go. We should make 4,000 donors and the $1,000,000 matching gift with plenty of time to spare.

We are at 3298 at 4:00pm. Last year we hit 4,000 a little after 5:00pm. It seems like we are tracking pretty well.

Our college has taken a HUGE hit of immeasurable impact in the process. I am not so sure. Will potential applicants be scared away? Unlikely. Few kids will have heard of this controversy and those that do will likely be unaffected. Not many Breitbart reading high schoolers heading our way. This will have a net positive on professor retention and attraction as they will see that the administration has their back. This will not damage the school's reputation with other colleges. The only potential downside I see is that some alums might be less likely to give in the short term. I predict this might be overstated, but we shall soon see. . On another positive note, this makes the crusader imagery controversy seem like eons ago. In our current political/cultural environment, as we get hit with controversy after scandal after accusations of "fake news," people don't seem to follow any of these stories for very long. I, for one, have not lost confidence in our alma mater's leadership and view this kerfuffle as a small bump in a very long road. But then again, I am an unabashed optimist.

In my opinion, Dean Freije is 100% on target here. She has to stand for academic freedom, period -- full stop. It is the academic equivalent of free speech; you don't have to defend what someone says, just their right to say it. If she doesn't defend academic freedom at the college level, HC will never be able to attract or retain qualified faculty, regardless of what some think of this particular professor.
This also seems like quite a tempest in a teapot to me. No one is saying that he has taught the subject of these writings to any students, and you can bet that if he did, the Fenwick Review would have been all over it. Also, from what I have read in the articles, the interpretations he writes about are not espoused by him to be catholic teachings or even a literal interpretation of the biblical texts. He seems to be writing in a provocative way about how some marginalized groups, more particularly here LBGTQ persons may interpret or receive the gospels. The work he edited is on "minority biblical criticism." It is far from clear to me whether he is adopting these criticisms as his own or analyzing the critiques of others. Bottom line is Bishop McManus will have no say in the matter unless the professor is arguing that these minority interpretations are official catholic teaching which I am sure he is not. I would also bet dollars to donuts that his scholarship would not be viewed as overly controversial at any ivy or other elite college.
With all that being said, don't we all remember professors offering controversial ideas? There were always one or two in each department whose reading of texts seemed way out there. Today, "way out there" is just further than it was when we were in school.
I recall in Professor Sanchez's Economic Systems of Latin America class he started the semester by writing on the board, "money can buy anything, even love." While none of us agreed, it did lead to a spirited and worthwhile discussion. I also recall in Fr. Manning's Liberation Theology course being assigned "The Gospel in Solentiname" by Ernesto Cardenal (a Catholic priest who later became the minister of culture in the Sandinista government in Nicaragua) where the gospels were read by peasant community as a way to address class conflict. This was very controversial at the time, as some viewed the work as injecting Marxism into the gospels. One of my favorite courses, Comparative Religious World Views taught by Islam scholar and then chair of the religious studies department John Esposito, invited us to look at the world through the eyes of Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Jews.
I specifically recall questions among some in the religious studies department about the notion of God being male and whether that was a correct interpretation or whether we just called him King and Father because that was how people in patriarchal societies viewed the all-powerful. If I recall correctly, in the late 70s we even occasionally allowed a nun to give homilies at liturgy before that practice was banned. Thank God that was all before the internet or people would have been looking for Fr. Manning's resignation.

How come the Cross has been completely removed from our branding? ?? It is in the name! The school is still called the College of the Holy Cross and we are Holy Cross Crusaders! Also, quite a few crosses in the video among many other catholic symbols.

I will continue to give to what Time Magazine once labelled "the cradle of the Catholic left." While I recognize some are upset, this will not affect my giving level or frequency of giving. I feel blessed by the education I received and more blessed by the wonderful education both of my daughters '12 and '15 received. Holy Cross still does a great job educating young people and getting them to think critically.
