Is Holy Cross out there on Fitton scrimmaging today? Serious question—Did you shoot HC games at one time and did they then pull the business?

When I was an officer in the Bergen County Women Coaches Assoc, the soccer coaches made a presentation to NOT schedule any games of the girls' county championship on field turf. Their data was impressive. Women seem to be more prone to ACL injuries on field turf as opposed to grass. However, some were scheduled on turf fields because of limited options (and some large crowds). I hope HC Stays with grass (given the beautiful work of the HC grounds crew!). I agree that whenever possible, games shoiuld be played on grass. Certainly at the professional level and at major colleges, there ought to be sufficient staff to care for fields. On the other hand, most high school grass fields are as unsafe as turf fields. They are generally terribly overused, often by multiple sports and both boys and girls teams and sometimes by jayvee and freshman teams. The increasingly wet springs we seem to have have also made field turf a need as opposed to a want for most high schools.

Jeff Kent is one of the best offensive second baseman in the game's history. A damn shame he didn't get in. Kent should be in. Hopefully next ballot. Should it matter that he was a second baseman when he never won a Gold Glove? If not, I think he gets compared to hitters with no consideration that he was a better hitter than other second baseman. His line is .290/.356/.500/.855. OPS+ is 123 He hit 377 home runs in 17 years with 9537 plate appearances. Has 55.4 for WAR Is he better than Dwight Evans who is not in the Hall? His line is 272/.370/470/.840 with OPS+ of 127 and 385 home runs in 20 years. 10569 plate appearances---and 8 Gold Gloves. Has a WAR of 67.2.

Could be worse. We could be watching Navy lead Bucknell 25-18 at the half.

This job pays twice (or more) what top D3 coaches make. It will attract interest from that group.

I’m guessing this is a joke with the “he should have been whacked long ago” but here is how the conversation would actually go when Nelson gets fired: Prospective HC coach “hey buddy, how would you rank the HC head coaching position among the other gigs in the PL” Friend: “Tough place to win. Clearly the worst job in the PL.” Prospective HC coach: “Why do you say that” Friend: “In the last 15 or so years, how many total coaches in the PL have had a tenure of 5 years or less before they were fired? Prospective HC coach: “how many” Friend: “3. All three were at Holy Cross. That doesn’t count Bill Carmody who “retired”…” Why is "retired" in quotes? Makes it sound like it was something other than retirement Given the amount of money he was paid after he left, it is possible he was pushed out projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/42103558/202121349349304472/full

I am not sure how important this stat about number of guys who throw in the 90s actually is at our level of D 1. I would rather have more than fewer, but I think we can all agree that guys that throw that hard get a lot of chances to improve their command and develop off speed stuff. Many never do.

Kalif’s 47 catches for 616 yds are slightly better than Watson’s. I do not know about those other stars. Slightly...but I have no problem giving the nod to Watson when you consider he was a rookie who took a bit to find his stride in the offense, and once he did, he became a very integral part of that offense and the team started performing better. Through their first 6 games Kalif had 17 receptions for 238 yds, Watson merely 10/89. Thats not to take anything away from Kalif, and frankly in starting a team, depending on who else is in my receiving corps, I may pick Kalif first when you factor in his blocking, decoys, and punt returns...but I do think Watson had the better season as a wide receiver. With this unacceptable take about football, I can only assume that you finance your waterbed and don’t have a vintage globe, a slightly used set of encyclopedias, a corner apartment, a fully loaded 2011 Taurus ,unlimited laser printing privileges, or a reserved booth at Beef O’Brady’s.😎

Uh, maybe you didn't want to list all the sources but there's a little thing called the Crusader Athletics Fund, the Gridiron Club and such in which a lot of alums and friends of Holy Cross donate $$$$. And that's just for athletics directly and I assume alums et. al. who donate to the Holy Cross Fund, while a general fund, some likely goes to athletics as well. Taking nothing away from the parents, or the students, athletic expenses are paid for from more sources than just them. Same applies to UConn. Definitely don’t think they need to spend gobs of money on independent FBS football in CT, but the athletic programs have been the primary reason for th e explosion of growth, alumni engagement and name recognition. Especially for out of state students paying $23,000 more in tutition than in state students.

We are not limited to the types of students we try to attract. The place can be sold to kids who want a Catholic college AND kids who want a liberal arts one. We know we can get kids who want to be premed and play the cello and we certainly can try to get accounting majors who want to be in plays in Prior. FWIW, I think that we are meeting the customers where they are with Prior, the new fieldhouse, the new apartments, and, hopefully the modernized Easy Street dorms. I think that those are more imporant than we might have thought. As far as I can see, the only kids we absolutely cannot get right now are those who want a perennial men's March Madness team. But we can work on that, too.

Do the owner and GM want to win this year, or is another year of tanking (I'm sorry, "rebuilding") in the cards? OKC currently has the 12th best record in the Western Conference, but is only a game out of seventh and a game and a half out of sixth. There is some sort of play-in round involving the 7th through 10th teams in each conference which they may or may not make.

Taylor quit right after the BC event. I don't think it was a case of a "bad fit." From a reliable source, it was a case of helicopter parents badgering her and the AD about starts for their daughters. I would think that would be a difficult issue for a brand new and young coach to handle. I think Napoli has the gravitas to deal with such annoying parental behavior. Will be interesting to see who he ends up hiring for the assistant slots. When you realize that Claudio Reyna and his wife, upset about their son’s playing time at the World Cup, told US Soccer about a 30 year old domestic violence incident involving the coach (one of their friends) I guess some annoying pageant mom and dad golf parents calling the AD shouldn’t be a surprise.

Foles--it's a new year--why not turn over a new leaf and stop the annoying dweebery and puerile provocations? What else you want me to say? The press box has no elevator, no bathroom, undersized, etc? It is a dump and subpar for a team that finished in the top ten in the nation. You should be embarrassed by it like all the UNH alums and students were for the old football facility. I still hear about it on the road consistently. Doesn't UNH play on a field with a track around it, like in high school?

We have certainly seen this on the boys' side for some time. UConn first year big man, Donovan Clingan, turned down the prep schools and stayed at his local public school, graduated in four years and now sees time spelling Sanogo. It is fun to see a kid actually do it like it used to be done. (And as we all know, everything was better back in the day. ) Here is the question though: If Clingan had reclassified and was a senior in High School now, would he be a starter next year in the NCAA as a freshman? This kid was the top player in Connecticut for three years running and has seemingly always wanted to play for his home state university. Presumably, he will improve more practicing with the UConn team and Hurley than he would at prep school and with AAU coaches. I think he is grabbing the gold ring now instead of waiting for, I don't know, someone else's definition of a better gold ring.
