More tectonic landscape shifts in college athletics are on the way. An NLRB committee has stated scholarship athletes are employees of the school. Unionization of these employees may be on the horizon. Will there be a nationwide union of college athletes(NUCA)? Will this impact NIL opportunities? Will player employees with lucrative NIL deals pay tuition? Arrange their own housing - buy/rent outside the purview of the school? Straying a little from sports, but if we're going to start calling scholarship athletes employees, then I would assume that their scholarship is taxable income. One thing to hand over a percentage of a cash NIL payment to the government. Another thing to come up with the cash to pay the tax on a $70 000 scholarship And if scholarship athletes are employees, what about the kid who wins the endowed flute scholarship and plays in various ensembles which perform before the public? Is her scholarship taxable, too?

Rodon to the Yankees on a 6-year deal. History of injuries but very good the last two years. We shall see. Alex Speier reported that Scott Boras was eating Red Sox appetizers at the Yoshida press conference while finalizing the Rodon deal with the Yankees.

Completely agree about the inattention to lifting. Our hoops guys don’t get bigger and stronger. I am confident we have the best facilities in the league to accomplish that.

Has it occurred to anyone that allowing these 5th and 6th year eligibilities are very unfair to the last few high school classes who won’t get to play while these 24 year olds postpone going to work? Twenty four is strange enough, but think about the kid who has a fall birthday and didn't start school until he was almost six, graduates from high school, does a PG year somewhere and then goes to college for 6 years. That kid is a few months shy of his twenty sixth birthday before he graduates. Of course, that has been the deal in hockey for a long time. It is just another reason why college sports has become less fun for a lot of fans these days. I don't think that HC will be ruined if 8 or 10 football players per class take 4.5 years to graduate instead of four, but it changes things a little.

BTW, an undergraduate degree from Springfield and head jobs at two state schools didn't get in Tim Murphy's way. I have come around to the idea that this "need to understand how to recruit smart kids" thing might be overrated.

I am probably not going to do that. Results matter and he hasn't had any that tell me he should make in excess of $600,000 per year. Do you think having context is important? When he began coaching at UML, they were in their first year of playing Division 1 basketball in a gym that looks like this: goriverhawks.com/sports/2014/7/18/general_0718141622.aspx?id=178There was going to be some ramp up time, don't you think? I'm not saying Duquette is the answer, but I think we could do much worse than him. He also wouldn't be making more than $600K. His salary now is roughly $250K. I misspoke suggesting we would double it...but we could likely pay him what we are paying HCBN and he'd probably take it. He's a New England guy through and through -- from Mass, played at Williams, coaching stops at St. Michael's, BC, Northeastern, and now Lowell. We have to remember Holy Cross is a bottom of the barrel program these days, so our choices might be limited. That said, HC still presents a higher ceiling than Lowell, IMO. $316,891 cthrupayroll.mass.gov/#!/year/2022/full_time_employees,others/pay1,pay2,pay3,pay4/explore/0-0-0/trans_no/1432161172/0/department_division So, he's been around the block. I realize that PL coaches are underpaid relative to a lot of other places, but this guy isn't doing it for me.

Wouldn't we just be hiring the guy Brett Nelson will be five years from now? A long time assistant who got a chance to be the head guy and never had a winning record either in the conference or overall? You’ve got to dig deeper than this. I am probably not going to do that. Results matter and he hasn't had any that tell me he should make in excess of $600,000 per year.

Without commenting on Crean, but hiring anyone with D-I head coaching experience will mean hiring someone who has been fired. I know 2 of our last 6 coaches disprove my theory, but I'm not sure someone is walking away from Dartmouth or Mount St Mary's in the near future to head to Worcester Can we double Pat Duquette's salary and lure him away from Lowell? Wouldn't we just be hiring the guy Brett Nelson will be five years from now? A long time assistant who got a chance to be the head guy and never had a winning record either in the conference or overall?

It’s wildly irresponsible for someone who has a medical or scientific background to post something suggesting a cause of death related to Covid vaccines when you have no basis. When we find out that the physician you are promoting is a complete quack, it makes it easier to understand some of the other nonsense you posted at earlier times during the pandemic www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/96652

ND's game has evolved from last year-it seems to this non-expert. Building on Dave's excellent insights, we can see the changes in some stats. Last year ND was extremely reluctant to shoot, taking only 4.7 field goal attempts per 40 minutes, perhaps the lowest rate you'd ever see. The team average would be 11 or 12. This year he still isn't shooting often, 7.4 per 40 minutes but that is a meaningful jump from last year. As well, after taking no free throws in 14 consecutive games, he has gone to the line in 4 games this year and, as Dave notes, he has made them all. The assist to turnover ratio is excellent. Edit: maybe "reluctant to shoot" isn't the proper term as it could be that he is not getting the ball often--let's just let the stats speak for themselves We had this discussion about Reilly who was only averaging 3.1 shots per 40. See, in particular, KY's post here crossports.freeforums.net/thread/5061/bucknell-2-game-night?page=4I just looked at Reilly's stats at Sacred Heart. He averaged 9.5 shots per 40 min last year and is averaging 10.5 this year. Make of that what you will. I said then and will say now about ND, I don't know if his hesitation is of his own making or based upon the game plan somehow. I suppose shots per touch in the offensive end would be an interesting stat to have to further study this issue.

YHTBFKM. The article you posted showed that the drop in academy applications had as much to do with COVID related restrictions on high school visits as anything. I am sure you also know that the size of the national high school senior classes continues to decline (because people didn't have sex and conceive children 18 years ago during the Bush Adminstration.) Maybe high school kids have figured out that they can become military officers while having a normal collegiate career through ROTC or post graduation officer candidate school. Maybe they just don't want to have a college experience where people yell at them for stupid things because of some inane theory that will make them better leaders of men and women at some point in the future. Oh, and did it ever occur to anyone that if young people don't want to wear business clothes to work (or even go to the office) they certainly don't want a job at which they can get in trouble because they failed to keep their uniform just so? Give the woke crap a rest.

After the second D3 game, I was worried that Q and NU would be twenty point blowouts. There are no moral victories and I am unimpressed with BN’s in game coaching, including player combinations, but at least there is enough happening that I will want to watch the PL games.

(I have always had a bit of a moral crisis about using self checkouts as they eliminate jobs (inc. union jobs at Stop and Shop where I do some of my shopping) but since employers can't hire enough cashiers any more, I feel less guilty lately. My local IGA only has cashiers so I feel a bit better there.) Always curious when people make this argument, do you refuse to use ATM's or self serve gas pumps too? I avoid self checkout because I tend to just hear the machine constantly yelling at me to put my scanned items in the baggage area, even if they are there...plus if purchasing any adult beverages you have to wait until someone notices your blinking light to come check your ID. At Home Depot, on the other hand, I am all about the self checkout I don't know of any place near where I live or work where someone will pump gas for me. I certainly have always used ATMs, at least in part because the bank is open relatively infrequently and often nowhere near where I am. (Different gripe: I don't like paying the extra fee for using another bank's ATM. There is no way that it costs either bank $3 or more to process the transaction. ) I just want people to have jobs and try to be supportive of that when I can.

Not to open old wounds, I do like you Jacked and all our other SDSU posters, did Stig serve a suspension for his DUI back in 2018? I wonder how this unfortunate incident has influenced him as a coach with regard to discipline, mentoring, etc. Could have been an interesting wake-up call. It could also have literally nothing to do with potential discipline for Malik. I don't know enough about the arrest, but second degree petty theft for under $400 is small peanuts. That being said, I think it does go to character and decision making. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. 1 game suspension? Back for the presumed game vs. Montana State or W&M? (From an HC fan perspective, a 1 game suspension for a Wabbit is season-ending!) The Twitter comments seem to indicate that it has something to do with a self checkout at a Walmart so I am willing to give the kid the benefit of the doubt if the coach is willing to do so. There is likely video of the incident. I have had clients (espcially those of color) tell me that they don't use self checkouts for fear of false accusations. I can also tell you that I have represented people charged with shoplifting at Walmart and that they are quite aggressive about having people arrested and seeking orders that they not return to the store. (I have always had a bit of a moral crisis about using self checkouts as they eliminate jobs (inc. union jobs at Stop and Shop where I do some of my shopping) but since employers can't hire enough cashiers any more, I feel less guilty lately. My local IGA only has cashiers so I feel a bit better there.)

It is entirely possible that they simply converted this from a fundraising event to a stewardship opportunity and a loyal donor and guest will be sitting in those seats instead.

I am happy that they kept it close against a team which has won a bunch of games and it gives me hope that they can win on occasion in the PL, but they looked bad for long stretches of the game. If you take the two D3 games out of the equation, they are shooting below 30% from 3.

I expect the Red Sox will spin this that 11 years/280 million is bad business. And it is. But fans shouldn't let them off the hook. If they approached Bogaerts a years ago with a serious offer there's a good chance they could have kept him. Exactly right. FWIW, they signed a couple of good relievers and an outfielder from Japan (Yoshida) so they are making some effort. There are still a ton of holes in this lineup.

I am afraid DeGrom will never stay healthy. Verlander is clearly a stud. If I were a Mets fan, my only objection to this deal would be the no trade clause. If the team is doing poorly in year 2, they won't be able to use him to get prospects at the trade deadline.
You have to take some chances in order to win. Bravo to teams willing to do so.
