Does Syracuse have a reputation for running up the score against over-matched opponents?

I'd like to think this year's dingbat scheduling is part of a very clever scheme to attract a charitable 500K alumni donation to the athletic department each year in the future so we don't play any more games v BC, Syracuse, Alabama, etc.
Something tells me an awful lot of folks would rather see us play a very challenging game v Maine, URI, Richmond or Villanova over Syracuse (in Syracuse) game 4 after earlier playing Navy.
(KY: If the line stays 37.5 you'd have to beat HC by an awful lot to be accused of running up the score.)

Does Syracuse have a reputation for running up the score against over-matched opponents? They do not. For much of the last 25 years they have been pretty mediocre and have had their fair share of nail biters against I-AA/FCS competition. Needless to say, they are now back to being a bordeline Top 25 team and Saturday will not be close for long unless our defense plays WAYYYY over its head. As far as talent/depth gap, expect it to be like BC last year. Im going to say 52-10. Ng drills a 50-yd FG at half to set the school record and get HC on board. Offense manages a TD drive at some point in second half.

Last year Syracuse beat a fairly solid (by NEC standards) Wagner team 62-10. Syracuse only scored 3 the 4th quarter so clearly had called off the dogs (although a 50-yard field goal up 59-10 is interesting).

Does Syracuse have a reputation for running up the score against over-matched opponents? They have at times, but they are getting flack about a poor season start and they may feel a big score would offset that.

Maybe next week its 50yd for the game. The alternatives to kicking the FG are going for it on 4th down or punting with the ball at the 32 yard line, both of which decisions could end up being embarrassing for the opponent as well. I guess if its like 4th and 20 just go for it and run a basic draw right up the middle. 4th and 3 though chances are the team on the winning side of the blowout is going to make it, if not score a TD. That's why a lot of coaches will kick and tack on the 3. You could also take delay of game penalties to back up and punt from a reasonable distance but "not trying" to that extent could add to the embarrassment of the score.

If you're going to schedule those type of opponents, you have to commit to what you're building. You can't be half/half out in football and expect to succeed.

We all know that past performance is no guarantee of future results. However, this time I believe the results of this game are going to be loathsome. I expect Syracuse will be ruthless and unrelenting. They will have no compunction about running up the score to the cheers of those in the Carrier Dome. This game could very well get quite ugly, quite quickly. I have no expectation of injuries but... My problem is this: It will be hard for me not to get really pxxsed off against Syracuse. I know the narrative - just running the offense, rankings, etc. Bull Doo Doo! I despise, absolutely hate to see any HC team ( or any other teams for that matter but especially HC) lying helpless as they get unendingly steam rolled by an all powerful opponent running up the score to preposterous dimensions. If the huge route does occur, as I fully expect, I will have to repeat to myself, "get some perspective, it's only a game", "the guys will be ok " and if all else fails, "what about your sweet wife, keep your stuff to yourself, happy wife, happy..." The money from this game for HC will never buy me happiness in the event of a disastrous rout. I hope that I am entirely wrong about this game, no huge rout, no injuries. LOVEHC In today's politically correct world, I view humbling experiences as a huge gift. Players should see this experience as a huge opportunity to make plays against an FBS opponent and create memories that they will have for the rest of their lives. You think players aren't going to have more vivid memories playing at the Carrier Dome? All people do on this board is whine about the schedule being "too difficult". What player wouldn't want to play at the Carrier Dome? What the F is everyone talking about? If anything, it will expose all weaknesses in hopes that they can be addressed prior to the Patriot League schedule.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. FBS-FCS matchups while relatively new to the Patriot League, are par for the course all around the subdivision. Here's a list of schools that regularly field teams at our level or worse but annually play $$$ games: Morgan State, Howard, Norfolk State, Hampton, Wagner, CCSU, Indiana State, Rhode Island, VMI, Gardner-Webb, the entire SWAC and Ohio Valley Conference. etc. Patriot League schools are doing nothing out of the ordinary by playing Army, Navy, Syracuse, BC, UConn and Temple. We're playing regional FBS opponents, it's not like we're taking BIG-TIME money games at LSU or Florida. A game on the road at Maine or Villanova would be a lot of fun but isn't exactly going to pay the bills. The guarantee $$$ talks. And sometimes these games are close. Drake, a middling Pioneer League squad, ALMOST BEAT #24 Iowa State last year the first Saturday in December. Should we have not sent the basketball team to play Oregon as a #16 seed four years ago out of fear of being blown out? After all, FCS upsets over P5 are still much more common than 16 seeds knocking off a 1 in March.

We are playing Syracuse at the Carrier Dome... the Carrier Dome!

No doubt that, except for Ivy, playing one FBS game is pretty common for schollie FCS teams. A PL team playing v FBS games 1 and 4 in the same season is very unusual. It is so unusual (and such a bad idea) I don't think we'll be doing this again very soon.

Okay-you're a Holy Cross linebacker. Every game you see still photos of the day's action and once in a while you're in a photo. Aren't you more likely to ask for the 8 X 11 photo of you tackling the Syracuse running back after his 8 yard run than the one of you tackling the Lafayette back after his 3 yard rush?

Has anyone polled the team about how players felt about the shellacking at BC last year? I expect not. I saw HC many times against Army at Michie "back in the day" and those games were generally competitive and we won our fair share. But, sadly, we're not what we were back then and FBS teams like Army and Navy...not to mention the "Cuse"...are better...much better...than they were then. We have no business playing legitimate FBS schools...impostors like UConn excluded...money be damned. That being said, if today's players really like getting their butts kicked by FBS opponents, have at it!

Carrier Dome and Touchdown Jesus and Roll Tide at Bryant-Denny . What a thrill! (Or maybe one service academy or a UConn or UMass per year is the way to go if you are PL and for some reason have to play an FBS...)

I don't need a poll of current players to tell you they feel the same way. I guarantee they do. If they don't, they should not be playing college football.

If you want better talent you build the Luth and then upgrade the schedule.
Most kids today see any college as a good academic institution, and they are probably right. The differences in the education they will receive is rarely noticed unless they go Ivy.
Most will tell you the education received at Michigan is the same as they would receive from Northern Michigan — no disrespect to the Wildcats but that would be a poor assumption.

I can remember seeing Syracuse and Penn State stick it to HC years back and thinking that I did not like such lopsided games. I tended to not support such match-ups as years went by. However, the players themselves (high school and then college) told me over and over that they looked forward to such games. Not all, but enough of them did that I have changed my opinion about such FCS/FBS games. One a year seems fine if players like it. Every few years (with 12 game schedules) two could be tried - with HC improving each year as a key part of that.
IMHO, to speak of three or four FBS games is clearly an exaggeration to make a point. There are FBS teams that could become rivals and others have mentioned them above. I imagined we'll se what happens and it will be up to. our new AD to set our course.

I am one of the "pitiful posters" who did not play football at Holy Cross. However, as I've posted before, Tom Gilmore never wanted to play teams like Syracuse but did want to play UConn and UMass as they were likely to be competitive games with possible wins and BC for the tradition and all of them for the money to defray the enormous costs of fielding a team of 90 plus multiple coaches. Plus, they were local with short trips. I am guessing Nate Pine added Syracuse for the paycheck and probably after we had booked Navy. In all likelihood, this was the one open date/year they had. Take it or lose it. As for the players, I can't speak for any and did not do a poll of the team but one player, who I know wrote me: "Syracuse will be an exciting challenge though so onto the next week" after we discussed the Yale game. I can tell you that I watched overmatched and undersized Crusaders lose big to Syracuse in '66-'68 (no '69 season) to the likes of Larry Csonka, Floyd Little, et. al. We didn't get a big payday for those loses. I am pretty sure our current players don't fear the Orangemen but know they have a very steep hill to climb. And, as I posted months ago, Coach Chesney didn't sound especially optimistic when he said he thought Syracuse would be a top 10 team when we played them. OK, back to radio silence for a number of reasons. Carry on.

Come on, some here seem to think we are sending out ill-nourished, undah-sized orphans from Boys Town this Saturday.
Our guys are (mostly) D1 scholarship athletes...some of whom were recruited by FBS schools. We will more than likely lose, maybe even badly but it will be the thrill of a lifetime for many of them, a great weekend for many alums and many other ancillary factors (school branding, $$$, recruiting etc)
Or we could play Marist.
