td128- Was the size of the crowd "perfect?" Do you believe 9,115 was the number of fannies in the seats?

No way were there 9K fannies actually sitting in Fitton today.....believe me, I'm not complaining in the sense that where else can you sit smack dab at the 50, mid-level without anyone checking your ticket at a D1 football game? Actual attendance was probably around 4-5K.

Sota---Why are you busting on td? His devotion to our football program deserves your respect. It has been a great day for HC. Two big wins. The campus looked beautiful, as it always does at this time of year. I hope you know that the students are on break which keeps the attendance down some. Enjoy life a little.
I don't know about the rest of you, but just walking through campus makes me happy. The wins are just a bonus.

I have enormous respect for td. I did not intend to bust him. I just wanted to call attention to how sad it is that on a day which was perfect in almost every way, the attendance was at high school level. If the students were on campus the attendance would not have been materially better.

Attendance is down for basically the reasons we've belabored here the last few years: college football attendance is down everywhere...HC related reasons: 1. we've lost the local/non-alum fandom by going non-scholarship, dropping BC and playing in the PL 2. we've largely stopped winning 3. the game-day experience has been hindered by overly draconian tail-gate rules (which seemed to be relaxed today....hmmmm) 4. HC continues to have games start at 1 or noon which simply doesn't work in 2016...we need lights and kick-offs at 3:30 or 7.

those are all valid reasons, which I think are pretty widely agreed upon, but you're just being a downer bringing all the negatives up after a nice win. just enjoy the win for right now

hc94- You don't get it. Those two players were on the roster prior to the injuries. Because you know for a fact that Cozier has looked as good as he did today in practice since Day 1 in August, making great reads and cuts day in and day out, and it didn't take a couple months to develop and prepare for the speed of the college game?

bfoley, kudos for the great pictures!
The action photos show what a photogenic sport football is. I looked at your hockey photos at the win against PC and they demonstrate to me that hockey needs to be captured on video not stills. As fast as football can be, hockey is just so much faster. But your photos of the Harvard game, especially some of the sequential shots of the action, capture some of the crunching hits and near misses. Love the shot of Flaherty's TD catch in which Wade had to thread the needle of defenders to even get near Brendan who made his usual spectacular catch.

Well, I am sure that everyone who supports Holy Cross is thrilled with the victory over Harvard (even if he did not pick the Crusaders to win).
The hockey win over PC was icing on the cake.
I will share what I wrote to my 1970 classmates in my role as Class Correspondent last night under the heading "Athletic History at Holy Cross today?":
Dear 1970 Classmates:
What a day for Holy Cross athletics! First, today the great Jack Lentz, quarterback of the '66 team, our freshmen year, who threw "the bomb" to beat BC and went on to play 2 years with the Denver Broncos and later on became Chairman of the Holy Cross Board, was inducted into the "Ring of Honor" with his name and number 16 now adorning Fitton Field.
The football game against the always tough Harvard started with the Crusaders very heavy underdogs considering the Johnnies were nationally ranked #20; were undefeated at 4-0; and had a 16 game winning streak against non-Ivy opponents (last team to beat them was our Crusaders) and also a 16 game road winning streak. Compared to Holy Cross sporting a 2-4 record after losing an almost certain victory over Bucknell last weekend 21-20, most gave the Purple small chance of victory. Yet, the Crusaders played almost mistake-free football with no fumbles and no interceptions and were obviously fired up and had an interception and caused 5 Harvard fumbles recovering 2, one of which was for a recovery in the end zone for a TD as well as 6 QB sacks. We've seemed to have discovered a very solid, if undersized back in freshman Domenic Cozier who rushed for 112 yards, the first 100+ yard rusher in quite some time. The Crusaders won the game 27-17. Also glad to report another solid contingent of 1970 Classmates at the game including the usual Bill Fox and John Hussey but also Steve Dwyer, Ed Kostka and Gary Brackett.
Now that is an outstanding day but it gets better!
I just saw that the Holy Cross hockey team beat the nationally ranked #11 team, Providence College at the DCU, 2-1 in overtime.
I cannot remember when Holy Cross beat two nationally ranked teams on the same day . . . . ever!
Took a sneak peek inside the Hart Center and the court is ready and the basketball teams are practicing and looking forward to an exciting season to build on last year's Patriot League championship.
Finally, next Saturday is the final football game in Fitton Field against League favorite, Lehigh, at 12:05 PM and our next "home" game is against Fordham at Yankee Stadium on November 12 at 3:00 PM. I hope to see many of you at both games!
All the best!
Tom Neagle '70

Cozier was recruited as a WR, most likely as the replacement for Raymond. As a recruited WR, he is learning passing routes and timing. He is not running into the line. IMO, he does not have the build to be a featured RB in Div I, regardless of speed. 24/7 recruiting page gave his height as 5'8" and his weight as 161. How many posters persistently complain about the small size of HC running backs? _____________________________ Re: attendance bolding mine www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/nfl-ratings-plunge-could-spell-doom-for-traditional-tv/2016/10/14/a7a23dc2-915f-11e6-9c85-ac42097b8cc0_story.htmlThis from an article on declining ratings for NFL football. This decline in viewership also has implications for the lucrative broadcast deals the Power Five conferences have negotiated, as well as some others, like the NBE. The gravy train may be coming to an end.

Domenic is now listed as 5'9" and 175 lbs, so he has gotten bigger. "How many posters persistently complain about the small size of HC running backs?" Uh. That'd be me! I don't want to see him making dives up the middle for sure but I honestly can't recall a runner at Holy Cross or anywhere else twisting and turning and causing as many missed or slipped tackles as Domenic did yesterday. He is quick and shifty but my impression is he is one hit away from having his season end abruptly.
I did love Luke Nikolaisen's power run with Flaherty in the backfield to get a key first down to be able to run off the clock for the win.

Wade was the 4th string QB. Crozier was a hidden WR. Two players that have unquestionably rescued this season. Does this staff evaluate potential/skill adequately? Well, they both were there and ready when called upon, so I would say yes, they do.

sader1970, given Cozier's age, I think HC measured him in cleats to get him to 5'9" Kalif in both his senior year at HC and on the Bronco's roster is listed as 5'9" and 160 pounds.
For me, the real surprise is Wade. I think he throws a really nice ball, and he has quickly picked up on a variety of offensive schemes, including trick plays. In Bell's three quarters last week, I thought the passing was much more vanilla, and if my recollection is correct, Bell largely avoided crossing routes over the middle. In defense of Bell, I don't know the ratio of his WR reps in practice compared to his QB reps.

Or, he actually put on weight and muscle. But, then again, we are talking numbers and I should not debate you on those!
As for Wade, IMHO, he throws as well and probably better than Pujals. He can really throw it downfield and has a rifle getting it through coverage. He doesn't run nearly as well. I was ecstatic to see our OL give Geoff some time to look off some defenders and threw to his 2nd and 3rd receiver choice a couple or three times.

Agree 16 rushes is probably too many for Cozier, but not too many touches... he seems to make cuts without losing speed especially on the sweeps
Agree that Wade, a soph, is handling the playbook very well; the 2 TD passes were big time throws under pressure; the Globe missed his & Flaherty's eastern Mass roots especially given that both teams boast significant numbers of players from out of the northeast
Jake's punt returns were a key factor... some of the credit should go to the precision of the return blocking, especially the first block
The D front was impressive
The new swamp grass hedge at the open end adds a nice look to Fitton

What a great game! HC now has 2 wins (in basketball and football) over top 25 Harvard teams in the last 5 years! Any hockey games with them on the horizon?
Couple of observations:
Wade's long north/south game actually seems a little stronger than his intermediate/horizontal game at this point. Really strong arm, got a lot of zip even when throwing on the run. Showed real nice poise on a couple of the long balls, waiting patiently for his receiver to break clear (while being pressured).
Wow, Cozier......what I liked most about him was - when he saw a lane opening, he ATTACKED it at full speed. Really impressive.
Too bad the students missed it (geez, how many breaks do the kids get these days!).
Great day for Sader Nation!

We'd be smart to NOT red shirt Pujals. Wade is the future. (Pujals could red shirt and then play for some other school next season ala RJ.)
