“You want me to start counting how many starters we have out on defense?” Holy Cross coach Tom Gilmore said. “No sympathy for the other team there. Listen, we have a lot more starters and players out right now than they did. That just doesn’t hold water with me.”

As someone else pointed out, what a great day for Holy Cross when you beat two nationally ranked teams and be there to witness both games!
Congratulations to the entire football team for a really good effort and win against Harvard!
There just seemed to be a much better effort turned in by the players and coaches in all aspects of the game.
Great way to spend an afternoon and then evening at the DCU!
Can we repeat it again next Saturday with Lehigh and BC???

Well, I am sure that everyone who supports Holy Cross is thrilled with the victory over Harvard (even if he did not pick the Crusaders to win). The hockey win over PC was icing on the cake. I will share what I wrote to my 1970 classmates in my role as Class Correspondent last night under the heading "Athletic History at Holy Cross today?": Dear 1970 Classmates: What a day for Holy Cross athletics! First, today the great Jack Lentz, quarterback of the '66 team, our freshmen year, who threw "the bomb" to beat BC and went on to play 2 years with the Denver Broncos and later on became Chairman of the Holy Cross Board, was inducted into the "Ring of Honor" with his name and number 16 now adorning Fitton Field. The football game against the always tough Harvard started with the Crusaders very heavy underdogs considering the Johnnies were nationally ranked #20; were undefeated at 4-0; and had a 16 game winning streak against non-Ivy opponents (last team to beat them was our Crusaders) and also a 16 game road winning streak. Compared to Holy Cross sporting a 2-4 record after losing an almost certain victory over Bucknell last weekend 21-20, most gave the Purple small chance of victory. Yet, the Crusaders played almost mistake-free football with no fumbles and no interceptions and were obviously fired up and had an interception and caused 5 Harvard fumbles recovering 2, one of which was for a recovery in the end zone for a TD as well as 6 QB sacks. We've seemed to have discovered a very solid, if undersized back in freshman Domenic Cozier who rushed for 112 yards, the first 100+ yard rusher in quite some time. The Crusaders won the game 27-17. Also glad to report another solid contingent of 1970 Classmates at the game including the usual Bill Fox and John Hussey but also Steve Dwyer, Ed Kostka and Gary Brackett. Now that is an outstanding day but it gets better! I just saw that the Holy Cross hockey team beat the nationally ranked #11 team, Providence College at the DCU, 2-1 in overtime. I cannot remember when Holy Cross beat two nationally ranked teams on the same day . . . . ever! Took a sneak peek inside the Hart Center and the court is ready and the basketball teams are practicing and looking forward to an exciting season to build on last year's Patriot League championship. Finally, next Saturday is the final football game in Fitton Field against League favorite, Lehigh, at 12:05 PM and our next "home" game is against Fordham at Yankee Stadium on November 12 at 3:00 PM. I hope to see many of you at both games! All the best! Tom Neagle '70 Hockey is much tougher to shoot with the glass screwing up the exposure and stuff. I don't have the biggest lens for football by I think I do fine :-)

Your football shots are excellent! I think the glass is just one problem shooting hockey pictures. A still photo of a player making a slap shot, still freezes the action to where it can almost looked posed. Not being critical of you at all.

This message just went out to the Friends of Crusader Football family. Given the passion of those who frequent these parts, I welcome sharing it here as well: Fellow Crusaders, October 15, 2016 was as close to perfection as all those who count themselves as part of the extended Crusader Football Family might ever experience. Let's count the reasons and enjoy the following photos: 1. Crisp fall day on the most beautiful campus in America. 2. A walk down memory lane with Ring of Honor inductees Jack Lentz' 67 and Glenn Verrette '80. Jack regaled those in attendance with memories of playing high school ball in Baltimore for Crusader graduate Tracy Mehr '54. Glenn reminisced about the HC games beating Air Force, Army, and Boston College when his teammate/classmate Tony Rocchio '80 gave BC tight end Tim Sherwin just enough of a bump to allow Glenn to go horizontal in batting down a 2 point conversion and secure the Cross' victory over BC 30-29. During the tailgate, I especially enjoyed hearing from Jack Lentz as to how he called an audible strictly between him and Pete Kimener on the game winning TD pass against BC. jack said the situation was 3rd and 5 or so with 35 seconds left when the Cross had the ball at the BC 30. He said when he came to the line he could see that the BC defense was positioned expecting him to run. He shouted to Pete (I believe the term was "daylight") who had single coverage and the rest as they say is history. 3. The company and camaraderie of great friends across a 90+ year time frame. Yes, look below at the photos of the legend himself Ed Murphy Class of 1942 in front of his Ring of Honor photo with 4 generations of his fabulous family. 4. A fabulous football game in which our Crusaders came out on top 27-17 against Harvard under the poised leadership of sophomore QB Geoff Wade, the coming out party of lightning fast freshman RB Domenic Cozier, a stalwart team effort on defense, and very solid kicking game all of which came together to shut out the Crimson in the 2nd half. 5. On the ride home and reflecting on this perfect day, I appreciated once again how special the Holy Cross Football Family and Holy Cross community truly are. Then I refocused and realized we can't afford to get distracted . . . BEAT LEHIGH!!
Let's Win!!Photos (hyperlink): Ed Murphy '42 and son, granddaughter and great grandchildren; Jack Lentz '67 and teammates/classmates Pete Kimener, John Sindoni, and Tom Haley; Jack Lentz and Glenn Verrette '80 with Iggy; Jack Lentz, son Mark and grandson; Billy Wright, Larry Ewald, John Allard, Peter George, Glenn Verrette, Curt Bletzer, Craig Cerretani, and John Ahern; Jack Lentz and a host of teammates and classmates. A few further comments: >>I want to publicly acknowledge and thank those on campus who made yesterday so special. Nate Pine is doing incredible things as our AD in terms of creating the culture and environment around Holy Cross Athletics that breeds winning. (To wit, aside from the Crusader victory over Harvard, the men's ice hockey team knocked off #11 ranked Providence Friars last night 2-1 in overtime.) I also want to thank Joe Bertoletti, Charles Bare, Heather Palmer, Luke Melody, and Jamie Reynolds for making yesterday a truly memorable day. THANK YOU all for caring so much. On behalf of all the Friends of Crusader Football, we are truly grateful. >>Have you made plans to be with countless other Friends of Crusader Football in New York City the weekend of November 12 when the Purple take on the Fordham Rams at Yankee Stadium? Don't Miss it . . Details here >>Calling All Crusaders: we are always looking to expand the footprint and impact of the Friends of Crusader Football. Please get involved by coming to a game, an event (the NYC weekend above), a reception, and make a gift to the Crusaders Athletics Fund/Gridiron Club. Thanks very much. The Lentz to Kimener audible was news to me, but hardly surprising. Throughout his career, Jack frequently called one play in the huddle, then without any audible, ran the opposite way his blockers were going, for a blind reverse and significant yardage.

Whine indeed! I wonder what game they were describing where (by their account) only Harvard was missing players. I thought it was actually a great article! And they did talk about our injuries: "Holy Cross (3-4) was also not at full strength, a fact that coach Tom Gilmore made well known. He entered his postgame press conference red in the face and husky in the throat, then sat down next to sophomore quarterback Geoff Wade. Now the starter, Wade started the season as the fourth-string quarterback and is still inconspicuous enough that his identifying placard, normally printed, was still handwritten.
Gilmore then talked about freshman Domenic Cozier, who played running back in high school but has spent his first year at Holy Cross as a wide receiver. After a slew of injuries at the position, though, Cozier practiced this week at running back.
On Saturday, he ran for 112 yards and averaged 7 yards per carry to gut a strong Harvard defensive line. Wade threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns and didn’t turn the ball over despite a stream of pressure. And even though his team missed two field goals and kept Harvard in the game, Gilmore said without a doubt, it was his team’s best defensive effort this season."
“Do you want me to start counting how many starters we have out on defense?” Gilmore said when asked about his team’s preparation for an offense missing three starters. “No sympathy for the other team there. We have a lot more starters and players out right now than they did, so that just doesn’t hold water with me. We had a lot of guys really step up and make plays.”

The first article I saw had a much shorter article that ended after speaking of Harvard's missing players with no mention of HC. The one there now is longer and more balanced. I am not sure how I got a truncated version immediately after the game but you are quite right about what is there now. It is good you used different colors and underlining, otherwise I might actually have to read what you wrote and quoted...which I typically do.

Saw the shorter version as well that most definitely did not have the CTG quotes about our injuries or any reference to them.
My bet is that a condensed/preliminary version of the article was posted yesterday evening then the full version came out later or this morning with the print edition of the paper.

We'd be smart to NOT red shirt Pujals. Wade is the future. (Pujals could red shirt and then play for some other school next season ala RJ.) Agree with the first part, and we are getting way ahead of ourselves given that we can still win the PL this year, but would love to see an open competition. I don't know if he was the player who was ahead of Wade on the depth chart and now may be one who is injured (per 94grad's posts), but Ian Brown appeared to be a very intriguing talent out of high school, as does the Massachusetts kid coming in next year. When I think about the best players in recent history, the first two guys who come to mind are Dom Randolph and Steve Silva. We need to find the next guy who has the attitude to put the team on his back like those two did.

Always nice to see an AP headline like this:
Associated Press
October 15, 2016 Saturday 9:57 PM GMT
Holy Cross delivers first loss to Harvard with 27-17 win
DATELINE: WORCESTER, Mass.
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Geoff Wade threw for two touchdowns as Holy Cross delivered Harvard its first loss of the season with a 27-17 win on Saturday.
Wade had 244 yards on 23-of-35 passing for the Crusaders (3-4). Domenic Cozier ran for 112 yards on 16 carries. Jake Wieczorek and Brendan Flaherty both caught scoring passes and Zane Wasp kicked a pair of field goals. Wade threw a 32-yard scoring strike to Flaherty followed by another touchdown to Wieczorek to put Holy Cross on top 14-7 with 1:39 left in the first quarter.
Tom Stewart was sacked on the first play of Harvard's ensuing possession and fumbled the ball in his own end zone where Brett Laurie recovered it for a score to put the Crusaders up 21-7 at halftime. They led the rest of the game. Stewart threw for 219 yards and a score for the Crimson (4-1). He was sacked six times.

Interesting to again see the emphasis on Harvard being depleted. "Against the Crusaders, coach Tim Murphy sat three of his key offensive players: quarterback Joe Viviano ’17, running back Semar Smith ’18, and wide receiver/return specialist Justice Shelton-Mosley ’19. Presumably, this trio will be rested, ready, and—most important—healthy when the Crimson resumes Ivy play this coming Saturday at Princeton." Were they sat by the coach to be rested for Princeton? There was no other mention of the reason but I tend to doubt that. There was also a quote you would probably only see in an Ivy game commentary: "The highlight of the second half might have come when LaPolice was brought down by a Crusader defender named Andre Chevalier. LaPolice and Chevalier…parfait for a Godard movie."

Looking at this article and this Harvard message board, harvardmagazine.com/2016/10/football-2016-harvard-holy-cross-0, it appears they sat their stars for our match up with them to ensure their health in Ivy League play. Truly disgraceful by Harvard. Would they have done this if the game was played in Allston? I tend to doubt it. No wonder Gilmore was unapologetic in the presser.

At times it almost seems as though they were expecting to set everything right when they got things together on the next play.
