1. None of the Siena fans will return. 2. I agree HC is playing beneath its talent at this point. The whole is less than the sum of its parts. 3. Gallagher resigned yesterday.from Hartford.

For those in attendance, was Coulibaly suited up ? If yes, did he look healthy in warm ups ? Not as far as I could see. Sweat pants on and shoes did not look like game shoes. Perhaps there's hope, but a lot of things have to come together to make improvement happen. Too many deficiencies in too many areas.

An excellent turnout by the students. The baseball team was there. Didn't look like the football team, at least not as a group. Siena, as expected, had a good size crowd.
Foul shooting and 3 point shooting poor. No excuse for the former and as for the latter, other teams seem to make their open 3s, not us. Been this way for some time and, at least based on today, no improvement. Noticed that some here said "same old, same old" and I heard that very expression inside the Hart. The team showed grit and didn't give up but shooting better improve or our record will be very similar to the recent past seasons.
I agree with the post that as time was running down and we had to make up some points where a good run could have had us catch up, we dithered around looking for the perfect shot as the clock ticked down . . . . . and we never did get the perfect shot, not even a good one. Almost like no one wanted to take a shot and miss. We have no "go to" guy. At least not yet.
As for the Dean game crowd, if we get 25% of today's crowd, I'll be shocked. Many came tonight because this was the first game of the season against a decent opponent. Game #2 against a former junior college isn't going to attract either the Worcester fans or the students.

The Hart Centah has once hosted Ohio State, Georgetown, UConn, Boston College etc....on Thursday night Dean (formerly Jr College) College will come to the Hart...I'm basically done hoop-wise.

Throwing my two cents in here without repeating too much of what has already been excellently covered by fellow posters I’d like to add that I was also impressed by our young Mr. Batchelder. He seemed capable, comfortable, and confident out there. Even after missing a couple shots I was fine with his taking his next one. I was thinking that he could end up being the real deal. However, I couldn’t help but think about the last time that I felt really good about an HC freshman in his first game when Drew Lowder wowed in his debut against Maryland. So, I will continue to be confident about WB ‘s future without commandeering the Batch Bandwagon quite yet. As an interesting (to me anyway) aside, while I was perusing the goholycross.com archives I noticed that Lowder had been completely cancelled from the HC roster from that year. And then going back even further to the time I was really impressed with HC frosh Mitchell Hahn, I saw that the goholycross.com didn’t have a box score for the opener against Harvard in the ‘14-‘15 opener that season in the Boston Garden. But they did have a link for the stats in that game, but clicking on that link provided results from the 11/13/10 game against the College of Charleston! I very seldom go through the HC archives and I’ve always been a firm believer in the saying about not believing everything you see on the internet, but now I wonder if anything on goholycross.com is accurate.

Too bad they couldn't have hit at least enough free throws to have it been a 1 possession game in the final minute or so.
Don't think they will be a great face the basket shooting team, but - how many times did shooters get to spot up in the halfcourt offense to receive kick out passes after dribble penetration? I can't recall one.
Which leads me to my next point/concern: I think Batch is going to be a really nice player, but I am more than a little worried they are throwing too much at him too early. It would really, really help if Tse could give them some decent play. A little concerning that a kid with his experience was not able to show a little more in the opening game.
A random observation regarding the portal and its effect on programs like HC (and how it might make/break CBN's tenure): Siena has a kid like McCollum, who, after showing a lot of promise as a frosh, looks like he might break out in a major way as a soph. HC - well, I think Luc had a good debut for the Bonnies.
I liked the fight in the team; that at least was a good sign. A decent core is there, but more is needed from the next group.
No issues with the refs.
Biggest improvement may be with that color guy; he really added to the broadcast, and seems like someone who actually has knowledge of this level of hoops in our area.
Unfortunately, we probably aren't going to be able to glean a lot out of the next 2 games. Will be really interesting to see how they perform in the Tom K. tourney.
On to Dean (I can't believe I am typing that).

10-23 on free throws, 7/14 assist/TO ration - not sure which one is more disturbing. Sort of amazing they were able to keep this game in single digits.

Gates is the best under sized bullyball player in the country! I don’t think I can watch the next game…never heard of the school. I guess HC is a football school now. Go ahead contrast the two programs. I think Gates should stay another year but play for the football team. Portal doesn’t appear to have been friendly to HC..

As we move forward, will be interested in how Kirkwood, Wilbar and Tse do. Based on one game, it appears that keeping BN for this year and allowing him to fill a bunch of scholarships late may have lasting effects beyond this year. Plenty can change over the course of the season and I hope they start to contribute but not a good start for that trio. To be fair and balanced, Octave is also in the late add camp and is obviously a good player.

If Tse and Wilbar are, at the very best, role players who are playing a handful of minutes each night, then having to carry their scholarships over the next couple of seasons is just going to weigh down the program for the next coach. Didn’t we largely know that both of these guys were hardly going to be difference makers? Seemed like Nelson knew he was running out of time and had to bring guys in just to round out the roster (which, mind you, he didn’t do).

Attendance—1631 How many will return for Dean ? Maybe 500?
Another thing to consider when evaluating our performance last night was that Jackson Stormo, their top big man at 6'9" 260, did not play. Last season he averaged 11 pts a game and 7 rebounds. He would have been a handful for us to handle.

The guys dug too deep a hole in the first half. I like the way they came back in the second half, but I remembered RW saying that when they finally caught up, they exhaled, and Siena was able to get a cushion. I don’t think Siena was a much better team., but they played better D than HC expected. They made their open 3s, HC didn’t. A bit better foul shooting night, and another 3 falling, we’d all be happy. I saw some good things, and things they need to work on, especially from the FT line! They will be better than most here predicted. I just hope the ride home improves. My Waze app had me off 84 twice and on local roads due to construction.

The game day experience at the hart was pretty good. I hadn’t been in years due to covid in 20 and vax mandate last year. The video boards are really nice. I didn’t have a beer, but the options were good and it’s a nice option to have. If we ever put a good product on the floor and play a geographic opponent, the place could get going. Would be nice to build on football’s crowds and community engagement….but there needs to be a buzz …. That comes from winning.
My gut feeling is that winning is important to Kit. His hoops hire is going to be so important.

Some real positives tonight - Bo, Octave, Gates, and Batch. Think these guys could form a nice little nucleus over the course of the season. As for my concerns, I look at the pace that we play at and just think everyone looks so uncomfortable. Whether it's a misplaced or bobbled pass that kills the momentum & tempo, it looks awkward to me. It does not appear there is much substance to the half-court offense other than 1v1 and asking Gates to bulldoze his way to the hoop.

The first half was very blah. At least there was more energy in the second half
Coulibaly was not dressed, but it's not like he had a cast or a boot or something like that
Rabinovich was the first sub of the game, but I don't think he played at all in the second half. Montgomery seems to be the point guard when Batch is out. Tse came in late in the first half when Batch did something the coach didn't like . I think he also didn't play in the second half. Nine deep in the first half. Seven deep in the second half - and one of those seven (Wilbar) only had a couple of minutes.
Down the stretch it was Montgomery, Gates, Octave, and Kenney with Dorsey and Batch doing the offence/defense switch off
HC went to a zone a few times but only for one (maybe two) possessions before reverting back to man
Gates hit two free throws late to bring the team's percentage up to a poor 40+ percent. If this continues, teams can will resort to the Hack-a-Shaq defense. Sienna wasn't much better. After the post game meeting, Kenney came back out and was shooting free throws
7 assists? I went to the open practices and there was way more ball movement than I saw last night

HC's plus/minus when he was in there was 7 or 8 to the good. He came in when late in the first half when the game was threatening to get out of control and was in the 7 point run that made it a ballgame. No idea if he can shoot, but, then again, can anyone on this team aside from Gates?

The roster on the website is accurate for the spring semester that season There are a bunch of gasp in the individual game stats that show different games

Speaking of Lowder, Cleveland St lost to Notre Dame (OH) last night.
Lowder played 22 mins and was 1-6 shooting (1-5 3PT).
